I have files in my recycle bin. My recycle bin shows nothing when I open the folder but there is 6 items in the folder. I have tried to delete them through C: ecycler but when I try that I get an error on the bottom of my screen that says The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

The error I get is: "Are you sure you want to delete these 55 items?" (Yes) "Cannot delete (long filename): the filename you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a different filename." The problem is, the recycle bin appears empty when viewed, and I've tried making sure all hidden files and folders are shown.I've tried ForceDelete (on the weird file/folder/whatever in c: ecycler) and it did not work.I've also tried removing and replacing the registry entry for the recycle bin, it did not correct the problem. Is there a way perhaps to do this in DOS? What would the exact command/location be? I've tried "deltree C:
ecycler" and "del C:

I've got Windows XP on my laptop. I recently created a file on my desktop with some Mp3's in it. I moved the Mp3's to my player and deleted the contents. Therefore, the folder remained empty. When I went to delete the folder, the recycle bin would not let me put it in there. I get a message saying: "Cannot delete (name of file): cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path or file name".

I'm using Windows XP - the other day I scanned a film negative into Adobe Photoshop, tweaked it then saved it. Yesterday I was tidying up and binned the file because I no longer needed it. Then, doing routine PC 'maintenance' I went to empty my Recycle Bin and couldn't remove this particular file. I get the message: "Cannot delete Dc4: It is being used by another program or person. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The filename is actually Scans2. I know of no programs running that might be using this scan. I read some other help sites, downloaded a utility called Mboot but couldn't select the file to drag and drop into Mboot's space. I can't rename it, move it, restore it or delete it ! I give up - I know this isn't a major problem but I worry about viruses and the like - I have Norton Firewall and anti-virus etc. all up to date.

Yesterday, I uninstalled Avast Anti-Virus because my ISP had me install Verizon Internet Security Suite. Then I noticed a file in the Recycle Bin--RB5.tmp and it won't delete from there. What's up with that?

I was wondering if anyone knows the file path ( if there is one) that would let you open the recycle bin via task manager (new task run) under win2k pro? I just had a call from a friend who, after installing google tool bar (by "mistake" )then used the search function and removed all of the files by hand .The end result was that the pc hung, and when she restarted explorer.exe does not start,(therefore no desktop, start menu etc) task manager does however function and i have managed to get her to open programs that way As she deleted the files to the recycle bin i was wondering if there is a way to restore them by opening the recycle bin threw task manager? if there is then presumably i would need to give her the file path, and was wondering :-
A/ if it is possible to do this &
B/ (if it is) if any kind person knows the file path to the recycle bin .exe ? I realize that this might not be possible and it might seem a lot more involved than simply poping in the win2k CD and doing a repair on the OS, but having done this with her before i know it will mean spelling out every action.

There is an Adobe Illustrator file in my Recycle Bin (Windows XP Professional) that seems to be locked. When I try to delete it or restore it, I get the error message "Cannot delete Dc152: It may be in use by another person or program." I have no idea where "Dc152" comes from. That is not the name of the file. How do I troubleshoot this?

So I was trying to import an already existing project into my Eclipse workspace. It was taking WAY too long, so finally I canceled. I looked in the folder that it did import, only to find another identical folder. I opened that folder, only to find another identical folder. I opened that folder, only to find another identical folder . I have no idea how many folders it made, but I just want to get rid of them. So I found the folders in My Documents and tried to put them in the Recycle Bin,

When I tried to remove a couple dated data partition Cobian backups from my XHDD, the error message, 'File Title too large to fit into the Recycle Bin' appeared. The deletion of the several Gigs of data that was no longer needed was stopped. How do I manage to remove this material from the XHDD so that the space becomes available?

It all started a few weeks ago when I could not move a folder to the recycle bin because it "could not find it". This week i did somehow get it to move there, but when i tried to delete it for good I got the same error. So i used Tune-Up Utilities 2008 in an attempt to get rid of it. The folder is gone, but the error remains. I think the bin is not working properly anymore either. I moved some folders of music to the recycle bin but they weren't there yet rar files i had deleted were. I have tried many many different commands, and a "restore recycle bin" registry edit, and safe mode.

My O/S is Win2k. All the files that I work with are off a file server. Every time I delete a file on my workstation it does not go into my recycle bin. Is there any way of sending those delete files to the recycle bin on my workstation or even having them go to the recycle bin on the file server.

My system is set up with three harddrives and multiple partitions on each drive.I know that if I just delete a file, it's stored in the Recycle Bin and not actually deleted, even if I empty the bin. However, since the Recycle Bin is on the C: drive, if I delete a file from another drive's partition, and then I use Eraser on the Recycle Bin to overwrite the files inside, are the files still on the partition and the empty space on it now has to also be Erased?

I've searched the internet for a simple way to do this, but it seems it all revolves around paying for the privilege, hence I hope you can help. I introduced a new hard drive into my machine which was going to be the primary drive, along with a secondary hard drive which contained all my MP3, MPEGs, JPEGs, etc. And before I go further, the second HDD hadn't been backed up for new a year. As I type this, I now understand the importance and value behind ackup!! Anyway, I inserted my Windows XP operating disk, and started the
machine. It went through the usual start up procedure, asked me to format and partition the new hard drive BUT, for some unknown reason, when I was prompted to choose which HDD

I want to use file recovery software to recover files from a HDD that was accidentally formatted. I am told not to save anything I can recover to the same drive I am recovering from. The computer only has a CD RW drive and a floppy drive. Can anybody tell me exactly how I can save the files the software finds to either the CD drive or the floppy drive? I downloaded three file recovery programs (1). pci_file recovery (2.) testdisk 6.8 (3.) free undelete. All have similar interface but they don't say how to save to floppy or CD. They just say do not save to same drive from which you recover. The computer is using windows xp and it has about 25 Gigs of free HDD space.

This probably isn't really a Windows question but I can't find a better place to put it.I'm trying to recover files from a Dell laptop that won't boot into Windows. I think the partition is corrupt but I don't know enough to say for sure. When I try to boot normally, it says "NTLDR is missing".When I use a Windows installation disk (as if I were going to install or repair Windows), and I get to the part where it asks me to choose a partition, it shows the partition as "C: Unknown" where the other partitions (from Dell) are FAT or FAT32. When I run Ubuntu off of a LiveCD, I can see a "52.1 GB Volume: disk", but when I try to open that it tells me "The folder contents could not be displayed". The DellRestore and DellUtility partitions can be browsed normally.

I just did a restore on a compaq laptop that is about 5 years old. It was having problems connecting to internet so I started the restore a few years ago. When I started the restore it was just shutting off on me. I gave up and bought a new computer. Well just a few days ago a good friend of mine passed away, and his family wants pictures that I had on this computer. Went to start it up and see if it would turn on. It did and continued with the restore, It finished the restore, but now there is none of my data left. I would love to get these pictures back

The way my recovery partition works on my netbook is when it was first used (I didnt not use it first) is it creates an image of the system when all the system has been setup then when ever I have to use the recovery it used that image to just overwirte and replace everything.I have access to the partition where the Recovery is stored and I have my Recovery Disk but as its a netbook I have no Drive, I can copy the disk files onto my Pen drive (if my pen drive is big enough)
I want to know if there is anyway I can change it so I can use the recovery and do it from scratch like when it was first turned on (first use) because there are setting there and other items that I want to change. If I could do it by editing the files in the partition that would be easier but I can try and use the disk if needs be?

I have two laptop computers. The primary machine is 8 months old and is of fairly advanced spec. It has a DVD/CD R/W but no floppy drive. The secondary machine, which was replaced by the primary some 8 months ago, is of much lesser spec but may have either a CD R/W or a Floppy Disk drive inserted into the media bay, but not both at the same time. Both machines are running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates and patches installed.

I have just finished completing the installation of a new computer system. Along with a complete overhaul (see signature for specs) I have installed a new SATA hard disk with Windows XP MCE 2005 to boot , and the existing hard disk (which has a non bootable version of windows on it) is plugged in as "spare storage". However I have some valuable pictures on the old hard disk which have been ecrypted for security and under the new installation I cannot access these files at all. I cannot even copy the files to the SATA drive as it claims Access is denied. Going into the properties of the files does nothing as again...access is denied. I would have gone into the existing windows installation had it not screwed up and decrypted the files before copying them over but unfortunatey I didn't know my motherboard and Windows installation was going to fail

I just recently deleted a folder that i wasn't supposed to delete inside my EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Inside that folder were 2 other very important sub folders. It was over 8 gigs so when i deleted it, i unfortunately commited the same mistake of pressing the "yes" button again when it asked the files to bypass the recycling bin being permanently deleted from the computer. In fact it happened so fast it seemed like it vaporized. It was hard to believe that over 8 gigs of files were eliminated that fast, whereas usually any big file i would delete would normally take a while for the computer to process
