Start Up Takes Too Much Time - Eliminate Items In The Start-up File
Jun 2, 2006I have a Dell PC 8250 and over the past two yrs I have managed somehow to increase my start-up time by inadvertently adding to my start-up file. I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system. Please advise, and maybe tell me what the basic start up should look like.

Jan 8, 2005i'm using windows xp service pack 2. i try to go to the windows update page and all i get is a blank white screen and on the bottom left hand corner of the screen, it says done. but nothing is there. if i edit the top url, i can go anywhere i want but just not windows update. i have no viruses, spyware, adaware as i have a thorough check of all and came up empty.

May 13, 2005On starting up my computer, after the Windows screen with the 'flashing' bar lights up, my computer hangs for about 60 seconds with a blank black screen before my desktop appears.Now the strange part. I've just installed a DVD burner in the slot where I used to have a CD burner. On installation I started up my computer with the cover off, and Windows started immediately - no hang at all. On replacing the cover, the hang is back. Co-incidence? I don't think so. I thought it may have been software related but now have no idea whatsoever.

Oct 22, 2005I have a really wierd problem here. Whenever I open netscape, the window "lags" when it opens. The window kind of comes into view slowly, like its lagging or something. Samething if I open a word <ocument. When I scroll, little chunks move at a time and it all lags till I finally get where I want to be. Also, Half Life 2 won't load anymore. The wierd part is, It used to be fine, then out of no where this starts happening.

Aug 8, 2009I just finished adjusting the services just in case there was something messing with my start up time. Surprisingly enough while the system might have benefited from the services tweaking the start up time is still 2:00 exactly every time. I have an uptime counter on the desktop so as long as it hits 2:00 the network icon appears and together the Bitdefender internet security. I uninstalled bitdefender just in case and this isn't the problem. It looks like my wireless network does not start before 2 exact minutes have passed. The system and everything starts in around 30-40 seconds. Then it is completely idle and when 2:00 minutes have passed the CPU usage goes up again and the network icon appears. Is it possible for the network to wait 2 minutes before it starts? If yes can I change that somehow? Help!! arrg! EDIT: After more service tweaking I managed to make the the wireless to start fast, together with everything else. Now Bitdefender starts after 2 minutes.

Oct 14, 2006I just got this computer a week ago and it was working fine until now. when i start up the computer or restart it, everything is normal except for when it gets into windows and my desktop shows up, it hangs there and freezes for about 30 seconds.i thought maybe there was some program in the start up menu that was causing this but i checked and nothing looked out of the ordinary. i took a log in case something might be in there causing this problem.

Aug 6, 2007I have is during start up, one time out of three or so I get to the log in screen where I click my name but a second before its completly there the computer freezes up. The Icon and Name are about 10% faded in and I'm left hanging. Even if i restart my computer 50 times I get the same problem untill I hit F8 during startup and go to "Last Settings that Worked".
This is bareable untill this time, It didnt work, as usual and I went through F8 etc. When I got into windows it started to load about half my icons and locked up :S. So here I am in safe mode, just want this problem to stop. Im a Uni student in my final semester of my degree, don't have time for this.
VERY SLOW START UP / Rebooting Also Takes The Same Time
Jan 15, 2008Currently i am having an issue with the my PC where it is taking arrpox 8-10 minutes to boot from dead. Recycling / rebooting also takes the same time. PC takes around 8-10 minutes to boot, the XP logo screen comes and goes, hangs for around 2 minutes on a black DOS like screen, no commands etc present, then hangs on the desktop image for a few minutes, then get the Window media sound, a few minutes later explore.exe process starts bring up the tool bar. then a few more minutes, may be 5 waiting for it to start and become active.

Mar 5, 2006I'm running XP, home edition. I've tried tweaks to improve start up time, used regedit, msconfig, turned off some automatic star-up programs, and used Registry Mechanic. When I tried to restart the computer, I'd be brought to the "Welcome" user selection screen. After selecting a user, the Desktop would load without icons or the taskbar (cursor appears), then after a few seconds, goes back to the Welcome screen. The few seconds I have in Windows, I tried bringing up the Task Manager, but it doesn't work. Also, when I click to load Disk Cleanup, nothing happens. Is there a fix for this?

Cannot Start Windows / Reboots To Boot Selection Screen Each Time
Dec 24, 2006I am trying to help out a neighbor today who has computer related problems. He boots up his computer, to go to the screen where it gives him 5 choices to start his computer: start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last good known configuration, etc. No matter which one he chooses though, they all give him the same result. He sees the windows logo with the bars loading up XP but shortly after that he gets a Blue Screen of Death for about a second (not long enough for me to see the error), then it goes back to the Boot options I listed above. Not exactly sure where to go when I am trying to help him at the moment. Usually, I can get the BSOD error and go from there, but this time I'm stuck because I can't see the error in time. At the moment, I have limited computer specs. from him (pretty sure its a dell) but other than that, not much else.

Pen Drives Work On Some Usb Ports Not Start - Error 10
Aug 27, 2005I have a set of USB ports on the front of my machine and another set on the back. My ports on the back work fine and if i plug in my 2 pen drives in it works OK. But if I plug them in the front I get the error
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
The ports on the front work OK with my digital camera and joystick and my pen drive works on every other machine that I have put it in.
Task Bar And Start Menu Properties Does Not Work
Jul 17, 2005Recently i downloaded a program for msn called 'CE/DP STEALER. After i downloaded it , it didnt seem to be working correctly, so i uninstalled it and all of its adds. , now my problem is that the 'CE/DP STEALER' has left loads of past items on my customise notifications. what i mean by this is that when you right click on the taskbar, and then click properties, i go to the taskbar tab, and then i click on customise.I see that
the CE/DP STEALER has left alot of rubbish in my past items. Is there anyway of getting rid of all this?
Start Puter First The Mouse Dont Work Any More
Oct 8, 2006when I try to start puter first the mouse dont work any more. I had a Logitech MX 510. IT lights up but wont work. Installed a Radio shack mouse worked for a little it. Then it shuts down too. I try to start computer and tap on F8 key or DEL key sometimes it works an sometimes not if it works I am good for a little bit. 15min to 30 min then lock up. If i get into safe mode its ok until about the same 15min to 30 min. If F8 and DEL keys dont work It starts the process and then gets to floppy disk and fails. It say Floppy Disk Fail (40). I have checked and the fans are working and thats not a problem Hard drives work and 1.5 GB ram and thats ok too. So stumped and wondering if I can fix it or not.

Aug 21, 2006i'm having a serious problem with my computer, i am on my dads pc the now because my PC is trippin. Programs start up on their own and the keyboard doesnt work. I Think it is a virus or a hacker, or maybe even spyware im not sure. When i stick my system recovery disc in and at the start up but wen it asks u to press 'r' i can't even becuase the keyboard isnt responding. is their anyway i can get my PC back on track ? because i dont want to lose everything on it i have around 300gb of stuff on it.

Jun 8, 2006I am trying to use the system restore function on windows XP, but every time i select a restore point and the system reboots, it says that the restoration was incomplete and "no changes have been made." I have tried multiple restore points. Microsoft.com suggested that i verify that the task manager, WMI, and system restore services were running, and they are. I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens.

May 10, 2006when I started my computer this morning it was stuck on the start up screen where it says windows like it kept showing the bars moving for like a long time. So I just turned it off by pressing the power button (wrong I know). Then I turned it back on and it went to a black screen giving me the options to run it in safe mode, start it from the last known date it was working, or start it normally.

Dec 29, 2007When I put a dvd in the dvd-player for a game or anything, it used to autostart that dvd. But suddenly, it doesn't autostart anymore. I have to start it manually, by clicking the drive and choosing "autorun". It is the same for other drives as well, such as cd-rom drive. How do I fix this?if it's possible, I would like not to install any programs. So are there any configurations or properties I can check?
