Network.exe Keeps Tying Up Resources
Jan 1, 2007
My computer has been really dragging. At some point I decided to do the ctrl-alt-del thing and noticed in the "processes" list that there was something called wmpnetwk.exe that was using up all of the processor. I wasn't sure what it was at first (thought maybe malware), but after checking out some search links I'm under the impression it is something related to media sharing with WMP11. I've had WMP installed for awhile and this just started recently. Severaly times I've ended the process, but as soon as I notice my computer dragging again, I check and I see the wmpnetwk.exe process running. How to I shut it down? I'm guessing it is required for some things, but can I put it temporarily on hold until I actually need it?

I can access the BASEMENT printers and files from the LAPTOP. I can access the LAPTOP files from the BASEMENT. The OFFICE PC shows up in the workgroup computers list on both the LAPTOP and BASEMENT PC, but I receive the "YOU MAY NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THIS NETWORK RESOURCE" message when I click on it. And I cannot access the LAPTOP or BASEMENT files from the OFFICE.

I have a laptop here running XP Pro that can login to the network, process/run login scripts, access the internet, mail servers, shared drives and other various network resources however the laptop in question cannot be pinged, accessed or otherwise be seen on the network (i.e.: \LaptopShare$, \IP.ADD.RE.SSShare$; ping IP or host = request timed out) The routing tables look fine, it is authenticating as it should, we've tried two different subnets, releasing and renewing the IP, even used a hard coded IP but the machine could not be pinged or otherwise accessed. I thought maybe the TCP/IP stack might've been corrupted some how so I removed all of the protocols and clients for that NIC however TCP/IP would not disappear from the list. I removed the device from device manager and upon Windows reinstalling the device, after a reboot of course, there was no change. Aside from reimaging the machine, what else do you suggest I try.

I have a gateway 6520 gz laptop with IE6 and XPHE, I 'm on a network with two computers and use NETWORK MAGIC for the network, when I turn the laptop on it wants to display {the page cannot be displayed} instead of going online! Then NETWORK MAGIC pops-up and says {YOU ARE NOW CONNECTED} then I have to manually turn on IE6 button to go online, almost like the page {the page cannot be displayed} wants to come up first instead of the connection?

I need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

My network adapter does not appear in Device Manager, until I "Show hidden devices". And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

This has been going on for awhile. When I start my PC svchost.exe kicks in and uses all the cpu's so I can hardly get any programs to run. I have resorted to opening up the Task Manager and stopping the svchost.exe that is the culprit. Then everything runs fine. I know that the svchost.exe is most likely a Microsoft program (Windows Update and Windows Defender) that you need to run.

running xp sp2 on a dell inspiron 9300, xp sometimes starts to lose resources, failing to open new applications, new explorer windows or lacking parts of guis in applications, such as explorer button bars or parts of menues. but if i then close an already open application to free some ressources and repeat the action that failed (e.g. opening a new explorer window) xp might be able to do it properly. i can repeat this a couple of times, until i'm down at only a minimal number of windows/apps and will have to reboot. after reboot, everything is normal again.
here's some more examples of strange things i've seen:
- explorer windows won't open at all, no error msg, system sometimes 'beeps'
- an explorer window might not display the buttons-area under the menu, but only a windows-logo in the center.
- an explorer window might display without the task area (blue area) that's usually on the left side
- whole applications won't start, sometimes giving error messages, sometimes not
there is no consistant error message that would identify which resource type the system is running out on. the system is constantly scanned for viruses, trojans, et. al. using symantec antivirus and hijackthis. there is more than enough memory (2gig) and taskman will display enough free memory when i encounter those situations. the system is used daily (sleep mode at night, no hibernation) and the problem might show up after 3 days or only after 3 weeks.i first suspected photoshop and dreamweaver to mess up something when running in parallel, because the problem always showed up shortly after those two apps had been run together. i stopped doing that, and found that it still happens, but it will just take longer.

How do you view system resources in Windows XP? Windows Me had a resource meter. I can't find that in XP. The Help system did not offer any help. Doesn't Microsoft have a resource meter for XP? If so, where is it?

Have"Iomega Automatic Backup Pro Software" and the Iomega 80gb usb external hard drive This software works great for backing up data The only way I can get it to work for a complete system restore on my C/Drive is in safe mode! Tried it on another computer had same problem. One of the computers has Windows Xp Pro (media adtion) the other windows XP home. The Windows Pro is HP that has the recovery backup on seperate partion D/Drive , installed as fat32,. Normal system is on C/drive . I can do a back up the on the D/drive Fat32 but not the C/drive which is NTFS. This appears to be great software very simple to use nothing like Ghost 2003 . only problem it doesn't work for doing a complete system backup. (The reason I bought it) Was wondering if anyone has used this software and had similar difficulties ? Or if anyone has any idea what could be causing the problem?

I have been quite happily using my laptop without any probblems for the past 4-5 months. Recently howver I have been getting a pop up info bubble informing me that my system rosources are running low.I have around 20G free on the hard drive, have run various spyware and virus checks all to no avail.I have also ran registry cleaners and fixers, but again the problem persists!I have normally only got Yahoo Messenger and Internet explorer running before the message pops up, and I have also recently noticed that my laptop has started to slow down a hell of a lot.I have tried everything that I can think of what with my rather limited knowledge so thought that I would ask the experts.

After I have had the computer on a bit, this error message comes up 'The win 16 subsysten has insufficient resources to continue running. Click OK, close application and restart' Then one of my programs, either perfect works or Print artist just closes and I have to stop everything and restart the computer to get it back on. All the other programs are still running and I can keep working for days with out hese programs, but when I want to use them I have to restart the computer all over again. They will then work for a bit again and then it starts all over again.

Well, it appears that I am having a common problem: I seem to be running out of system resources on a regular basis. I have a Dell Latitude D531, Turion 64 X2 mobile TL-60 2 GHz, with 1.87 GB of RAM.I mainly use outlook (with a several hundred GB .PST file), firefox 3.5.1 with google toolbar and IE tab add-ons, the newest version of foxit and a proprietary office-based software simultaneously.About three months ago, I recollect seeing a distinct performance lag with the computer and started to run out of system resources on a regular basis. Programs wouldn't launch without a message (or sometimes a system resource message appeared) and running apps would crash after hanging. When this starts to happen, I can close all of my applications and still see hang-ups and apps crash.
I archived my PST, run fewer apps at once, restored XP, cleared up HD space and run several different anti-virus/malware/adware programs with limited success. I have also attempted to remove as many non-essential applications, in case of a conflict that I was unaware of. At this point, I think the problem is software-based but beyond my comprehension.

My computer is acting up.. right after i finish starting up, before I even launch an application, the cursor will show a flickering hour glass (like it's processing something), however nothing is running. And when I do try to launch an application (something as simple as IE) it takes forever to load. I clicked "control-alt-delete" to see my task bar -- it shows no tasks being performed, but on the performance tab it shows CPU at 100%. I thought maybe I had a virus, so I did a scan using Trend Micro PC-cillin, but no viruses were detected.

Hardware: Compaq Presario x1000, Win XP Home SP1, 1.4 Ghz, 512 Ram.
Symptom: Lsass.exe is using about 60%, and svchost.exe is using about 40% (they move around up and down but are always using 100% together). Recently the computer semi died (after the login screen it would blue screen). I repaired to OS (the reinstall option for windows that leaves data and programs intact). Have chkdsk the HD (found and repaired errors), ran a defrag, ran diagnostics on the HD and RAM (all clean), and the computer still moves at a crawl. I've found a lot of articles about LSass.exe causing problems with win 2k domain controllers, but this is not win 2k, is not a domain controller, and is in fact not even on a domain. HijackThis log is clean as a whistle

Every time I turn on my computer, a background process called "wuauclt.exe" and "svchost.exe" take up all of my systems resources, mainly meaning that the CPU runs at 100% clock speed. I know that the two are related, and that they serve to update my computer with Windows Update. Unfotrunately, as mentioned before, this takes its toll on my PC, and slows it down to a crawl. I have turned off "Automatic Updates" but the process still runs every so often, mainly when I turn on my computer. How do I disable it <b>completely</b>? Furthermore, I'd like it if the only way to install my updates was via the Microsoft /Windows Update site, not via the background process.Concerning the Windows Genuine Advntage WGA tool - How often does this transmit information to Microsoft?

my computer is running at 100% CPU almost all the time, erratically. I am SO frustrated-- this has happened to me twice before, and I could not figure it out, so I just reinstalled fresh copies of Windows each time.It runs fine for a while, then all of a sudden this same problem comes back. I am sick of having to reinstall all of my programs, and was hoping that maybe someone else was having a similar problem so I wouldn't have to reinstall everything again.
