After doing a very silly thing I had to reformat my computer twice, all seemed to be ok but now I have to click on the shut down button 3 times before my computer exits. On startup the screen remains black and I have to reboot through the power on/off button it reboots on the second try.I have an advent laptop windows xp pro sp2.
why my monitor wont turn off after shut down when i was using window 98 and window Xp sp1..my monitor will turn off automatically after it shut down.but now ( after i updated to Window Xp sp2 ) i need to turn it off Manually
I seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?
I've been having this prblem for several months but recently it has been getting worse. I'm working on an Dell Optiplex gx280 windows xp professional sp2. Here is the problem, while I'm working on my computer (doesn't matter what I'm doing) I will get an error msg "low disk space" flash on my screen, then my monitor will shut off, but the power light on the computer stays on (sometimes flashing). I'd have to power it off and turn it back on and it would log in normally. This morning it happened 3 times
I just moved in to college and set up my computer, but due to limited space didn't bring my second monitor. Now my aim, and ventrilo windows are still on the other monitor but no way to get them to the current monitor for use.
When Windows adds a new monitor using the standard driver, can it detect the aspect ratio? When I hooked up mine, all the resolution choice were for 4:3 monitors. There were no widescreen options. It should choose the monitor's native resolution on its own if the monitor is an LCD.
I have a old Dell computer which I brought a 24" Dell HD monitor. I upgraded it with a new graphics card which has both VGA and HD capability hook-ups. Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?
my darn gateway monitor screen is too wide. How do i reduce it to the regular size? I pressed Ctrl and held down on the scroll lock and nothing happens. i tried to reset it with the monitor button but nothing happens.i can not view the right side graphic on my monitor
I replace my old LCD monitors (Dell 1905s) with new acer P223w's. I have a dual monitor display.I power off both monitors with one switch that cuts off the power. When I do this however, Windows makes the sound like a device has been disconnected and it messes up my monitor settings. This is very annoying and it didn't happen with my other monitors nor does it happen on my other Windows XP system with different monitors. It's like Windows is trying to be "smart" by thinking the monitor is gone. I do not want Windows to care if the monitor is powered off.
I wonder if it is possible to switch off the computer's monitor manually. System Control / Energy provides the possibility to define how long the computer must idle to disable the monitor. I want to do that "by hand". Is that possible?
A host computer, windows xp, plugged directly into a satellite modem (Internet) and ONE client computer. I had to configure my IP addresses manually, but the host ends in "2" and the client in "3" at the end of the IP string. So - from the client, I can 1) See the Internet fine 2) Ping the host fine 3) Ping the root host (1) fine From the host I can 1) See the Internet fine 2) When I ping the client, it returns REQUEST TIMED OUT Both computers are members of the same group. Both seem to connect fine to the Internet at all times, no problems. The host computer, sees ITSELF, in that, if you map a drive, and you click on Microsoft Windows Network, then the group name, you SEE the computer name. On the client, when you click on the same group, it stalls, and you see NOTHING - neither the client NOR the host (despite being able to PING the host) The Windows firewall is TURNED OFF on both machines. What do I do to resolve "Request Timed Out"? The client is attached to the network via a Belkin Wireless Adapter, which seems to work and connect PERFECTLY. From the client, you can ping the client,(itself) and it responds.
My computer freezes at least twice a day. Sometimes when i leave it on for quite some time, it freezes. At other times it just freezes while i'm doing some work. Just now the computer restarted by itself when i was running some programs (matlab, excel, bitcomet, zone alarm). I have to restart my computer manually everytime. I'm using Windows XP SP2, Zone Alarm Pro, BitComet, Prevx, McAfee. I've already checked my power option (hibernation disabled, never turn off monitor or hard disks and never standby).
I have been looking into this computer restarting. I have downloaded recent drivers and updates. I looked at Microsofts suggestions. After the bsod if comes back up and the error reports says they are not sure what it is but it has something to do with antivirus. Here is the event. It seems to happen whenever they are playing games or online. sometimes they will just go back to the desktop and the program will close.
I just completed my first computer build and everything went fine, until i had to install windows. I am using Windows XP with SP2 its an oem version, and i am getting the asms problem. The only problem is, i can't use the microsoft solution because of the fact that my keyboard and mouse are not functioning when the problem goes off. I can't figure out how to just start the installation over and i don't really know where i should go from here. I hear that getting a new cd drive may help, i'm using the ones from my old computer. I also hear to borrow a windows disk and use a different disk.
I've used Microsoft Configuration a hundred times, no problems with that. I alway zero in on Startup check or unch0eck something and leave it at that.Tonight I noticed a tab marked "service" and investigated. There are lots of entries, all checked off, and many of them refer to programs long since deleted. What are these entries, can I uncheck some of tjhem, eg the ones belonging to programs long ago deleted? And most important why is this section separated from startup?
When I tried to power on my personal computer this morning, I got a series of 6 or 7 beeps the first 2 times and my personal computer didn't turn on. The third try did turn it on. What does this mean? Is it indications of serious problems?
About 2 weeks ago, my brother needed a program which i had on my computer and decided for us to share computers via wireless connection.Ever since then i keep on getting this error message, regardless if i am online or not, but it pops up about 50 times a day.Error 623 The System Could Not Find the Phone Book Entry for this Connection 1.how do i get rid of that error? 2.how do i UNSHARE the connection with my brothers computer?i am using win xp with sp2. and its a dell inspiron 600m.
i have a problem with my windows xp service pack 2.while starting my pc it restarts one or two times and then starts properly and checks the drive on which the pagefile is allocated alongwith the system drive.
i think there is a problem with the pagefile allocation because i have found that the drive check takes place of that drive on which the pagefile is allocated.
I'm not sure whether this is a hardware or software problemBasically at random times my computer just seems to lose power and shuts itself off. Ive have taken it too computer shops and had it looked at, they have done various things like change motherboard etc and none of that has helped. The last piece of advice I had was that it was probably software related and the best way to fix it would be to simply wipe the system and start from scratch but if possible id like to avoid that.Sometimes the PC will stay on for 4/5/6hours at a time and run fine, other times after just 5 minutes it will shut itself off. Then when I try to turn it back on it won't switch on unless it is left for a while.
Lately it has been going super slow I have been trying to play my sims 2 game which was working fine until I installed the Sims 2 Pets. which seems to have trouble running on the computer. However the computer had been running slow previous to all of this. It had also been restarting itself at random times which we thought was because of the video card as the fan is humming and vibrating making all kinds of weird noises. I have now deleted all unecessary programs and uninstalled all of the sims programs. I have also ran two different anti virus programs whilst in safe mode which did not pick anything up each time. As of now it is running pretty efficiently but I can not do anything with it when i open IE6 it will load Google but no other pages.it just doesn't work it stays open sometimes when IE6 freezes the whole computer freezes and I have to restart by using the power button.
I've just recently purchased a system within a week only to find that my wired optical mouse has stopped working correctly. It sporadically moves from place to place and at times is completely unresponsive. The weird thing is that every once in a while, the power on the mouse completely turns off (no light coming from it). I am certain the USB mouse works as it has been tested in another computer.
when I click on help and support in start menu I get this message: helpctr.exe - bad image the application or dll crogra~1comma~1office12msoxmlmf.dll is not a valid windows image? it pops up about 3 times, but still manages to load the help files in the enda bit of my history: I have updated to service pack 3 and then the problems started.I got infected with two trojan generic 7 yhe's which my AVG FREE picked up on and virus vaulted, after that my computer went to pot. I scanned many times with: AVG - SPYWARE DOCTOR - MICROSOFT MALICIOUS SOFTWARE DETECTOR - all of which thought everything was fine, until I installed spybot search and destroy which picked up on 8 malware problems and sorted them. I scanned with AVG again and that found 3 problems/viruses to do with microsoft office containing macros which were vaulted.
For odd reasons, my computer likes to freeze when I'm doing anything. I'm using a new eMachines, and it has an AMD 64-bit processer. I have lots of memory too. 512 mb. So if anyone knows of any fixes, please let me know.
Well for the past 3 or 4 months i have been experiencing random slow boot times for my machine. Sometimes I will turn my computer on and be at my desktop fully loaded within 30 seconds. Other times it can take more then a half hour. This only has to do with the windows xp loading screen itself. (i've spent many an hour watching that stupid blue bar moving across the screen, and sometimes it just stops completely for long periods of time) My bios posts quickly and once i get out of the loading screen I'm usually done with in 5-10 seconds.
I've tried reformatting several times, rewriting the boot sector, and mbr. I 've tried disabling all unused network controllers. I've tried disabling precashing of programs in registry. I have also used the program bootvis, which is supposed to help speed up boot times, and it usually helps a lot for about a day, and then it would be back to normal. Defraging the hard drive has no affect either, and i have checked the drive for errors and have come up with nothing.
I have recently installed Call of Duty with no problems. However when I launch the game either by autoplay from the cd or by clicking the shortcut the game takes around 2 minutes to load. I have also just installed Doom 3 to try that and it does exactly the same, taking 2 minutes to load. Once the games have loaded they run fine. Does it have something to do with activision games since Ubisofts Farcry loads instantly?
I was just experiencing a little minor problem with some pop-ups and last Saturday I decided to backup my files and format my comp. The first time I just formatted the C drive and left D, E, and F untouched. It took me 3 hours to install Windows XP. So the second time I wiped all partitions and make new C and D drives.. this time it took about 2 1/2 hours. THe last time I borrowed my friend's copy of Windows XP and reinstall it, formatted all my drives again, and took about 2 1/2 hrs again. Then this time I decided to reinstall/update all my drivers, windows update, etc Use ad-aware, Spybot, CWS Shredder, and Ewido to scan my comp.. nothing. Installed BitDefender and scanned, nothing.I'm running P4 2.0GHz with 512 RAM. I checked the CPU temp in the BIOS Menu it says 40C. I'm currently trying to run Windows Registry Repair Pro to see if any registry problem.. But my comp is running so slow. Start up takes forever and running programs take even longer. The interesting thing is that my CPU usage is hanging around 100% most of the time, no matter when it's right after I reinstall my windows or when i'm running programs. Please help, it's been 2 days and I can't solve this on my own.
Whenever I'm on this personal computer you can hear the hard drive rev up at random times and I am not sure if this is normal. I have run adaware se, spybot, yahoo anti-spy, avast anti-virus and everything is clean. I just want to know if this action is normal and/or is there a way I can make it stop? This personal computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-W30 running Windows XP SP 2. I also have a ton of extra space on both internal hard disk's, not sure if that's relevant or not.
For some reason today I now have to click several times with the mouse on a link or heading before the page will open or redirect with my browser. I thought at first it was just Firefox but I have the same problem with IE7. Ihave to click several times for just about everything before anything happens. Some thoughts would bwe appreciated
