Media Edition - 500GB Harddrive - Reinstalling
Mar 28, 2008
new to this forum and looking for a bit of help with my windows xp media edition. A year ago we purchased a refurbished gateway computer with windows media edition already installed on it. The media addition is a legitimate registered program so I can get updates etc for it. Right after we bought the computer and hooked it up to the net a program that was also on the computer (called Big Fix) downloaded 35 updates for my system and installed them. Most of these updates were windows updates. Right after that I started having problems with my computer booting into windows when I turned it on. The windows logo would show very dim on the screen and slowly get brighter......then it would flash a blue screen (can't read what the screen says, it goes by so fast) and then comes back up into safe mode with the option to start up with the "last good configuration known) This doesn't happen everytime I turn the computer on, sometimes it will go a week or two before the blue screen shows again. (although a chilly room seems to affect it more) Now it is happening more often and my "change/remove" option on most of my programs in the control panel are no longer available.

Wondering which versions of XP can Access which other versions of XP.Specifically, can media center edition access media center edition , or do one or both OS's have to be XP PRO. My understanding is that XP Home cannot access or be accessed via Remote Access.

I have XP Media Center Edition 2002 or 2005 (not sure which) edition on a dell desktop and I have problems with Media Edition so I'd like to go to plain XP home edition. If I buy and run the XP Home upgrade, will that work on top of MCE?

Since installing SP3 my media centre will not open although the rest of XP runs fine. I get a report 'Strong name validation failed for assembly 'C:Windowsehomeehshell.exe. The file may have been tampered with or it was partially signed but not fully signed with the correct private key.I have the original installation disk from Dell, but it won't recognise the key that came with the pc to re install it. Is there any way I can repair the file in question. I have tried uninstalling sp3, and using the recovery program, but nothing is working to make it work again.

I have had my computer for almost two years and ever so often I like to wipe out the hard drive and start over from scratch. I have made a list of programs to make sure I can put them back on and I also have my entire hard drive backed up on an external hard drive so I can transfer my important files back over. My question is what all do I need to get the system to work again. I have the Win XP Home instalation disk as well as the driver disk from dell. Will the computer automaticaly start using the two CD drives and 3.5 drive or do I need drivers for them as well? Sorry if this is a rookie question. I just want to make sure once I wipe it out I am all set to get it back up and running. The reason I decided to do this now is that I have a few spyware and viruses that I am having trouble getting off. They arnt doing anything because of my firewall and other settings. I just want to wipe it off and start over with a clean slate.

the problem was described as a non booting pc. That was it.I booted the pc to find the message ntldr missing. Did a repair of the mbr and replaced boot files. Still no luck. So i thought i'd try a live linux cd in it to see if i could work out weather it needs replacement hardware or whether it is a software error.
Anyway the pc boots and i've got access to all the drives, I take this opportunity to backup the user files and also take a copy of the hidden partion (as its a packard bell pc and the recovery files are there)I've downloaded the recovery cd from packard bell but it keeps asking for master disk 1 to be placed in dvd drive (which i haven't got cos the user has not made the backup disks). What i want to know is, is it possible to make the backup discs from the files I have recovered from the hidden partition? Is it possible to write these files with nero for instance as a bootable dvd and then install like that (i haven't tried this yet because the file size is 5.5 gig and i've got no dvd 9 discs to hand)Or last resort boot these files over the network and install that way. (i've never tried this and i'm not sure i know whats involved)

Mine is a Dell laptop. I have Windows XP Media Center OS installed on my system. The other day it needed to install some windows files and asked to put the OS CD, I put in my Windows XP CD by mistake. It authenticated and installed the OS partially. Now I have two OS on my system. And the Win XP is not correctly installed. I want to un-install the Win XP and delete the files in the system and keep the original installation of Win XP Media Center.

Now my problem is with SP3.As you can see in the title my current OS is Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition SP3 Integrated. However, I do not want SP3 as it is causing problems with my tcp/ip. What I'd like to know is if there's some kind of way I can remove this integrated SP3. I do not have it in my add/remove programs clearly as it is not manually installed.

So I just got the Xbox 360 COD special edition. There's an option to somehow connect your computer to your Xbox. The requirement is to go through the Media Center. Well, first time starting up the Media Center on my computer, and I'm not able to get the Media Center to open. I receive an error right on startup of the program. It ends up generating a crash report, and closes. I've take 2 screenshots of the error. The first screenshot is of the first error that comes up upon opening the Media Center. The second screenshot is of another error I get when I choose to cancel instead of clicking ok on the first error.

I was wondering how I might disable the above functionality in Win XP MCE. I have been told (and read on www.grc.com) that this is a security risk if not disabled. Should I indeed disable it, and if so, how do I do it? The tool on the website mentioned above does not work for me for some reason, and just "hangs."

Just received a used Dell computer running XP Media Center Edition. Trouble is, no updates for SP 2 were ever installed. Where on earth do I begin??? I went to windows update page, and it said there was one critical update. Tried to download it and kept getting an error message.I'm not really all that computer literate, and have no idea where to begin ! I even get an error message when I go to my Control Panel.

I was having problems with my XP 2005 Media Edition desktop freezing while watching TV so I uninstalled the ATI Radeon Connect3D 9600 256mb video card. It restarted no problem. I lowered the resolution to 800x600, no problem. I turned on the media center and let it sit for a bit. It froze. Now on start up I get the following: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM

I am building a new system soon and need advice on which version of XP I should use. My system will use an AM2 processor athlon64 and an Asus M2N-E motherboard. However in the future I may get a dual core CPU. Does Media Centre Edition support dual core?Is it worth running 64bit XP?Are there any differences in performance between the different versions?

I am considering building my first computer and would like to use Windows Media Center Edition. I've read it can be a little finicky with some hardware compatibility which I think I could handle, but is it hard for a first-timer to put together a reliable WMCE computer from a software standpoint? I have some experience but would not consider myself advanced by any means.

This system had loads of problems by the time i got it to "fix" it wont system restore - they have all been deleted, BSOD, serious error recovery every other start, viruses, spyware by the ton.Simple start would be to try a repair, if that doesnt work total reinstall as i just cant be bothered with it.Problem is the Fujitsu Siemens recovery disc when used from windows states the serial is incorrect. The sticker on the box states "Win XP Media center Edition 2005".The Fujitsu Siemens Recovery CD states "Win XP Home Edition-SP2".Now unless there is some "Trick" that im not aware of it isn't ever going to work! so Fujitsu Siemens sent the wrong disc with the system and it only now when its needed that i realise they are wrong! The system probably isn't in warranty and Fujitsu Siemens don't allow any form of Email support.

At first it was internittant and could be solved by turning the computer on and off along with playing with the powerstrip, now these methods have failed tend the computer refuses to boot up at all

I have a brand new 500GB SATA hard drive which is straight out of the box. I don't have vista yet but plan on getting it soon (when the next service pack is released) and don't want to have to reformat my hard drive when i do. So i thought it would be better to prepare for it now

I know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive

I reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up
