View 2 RepliesMy laptop (running windows XP) keeps shutting down on its own every few hours, it will shutdown once, then I will turn it back on and it will shut down again, and it does this like 4-5 times before I can get it to work again, and then a few hours later it will keep shutting down again, and the pattern keeps continuing. Since it is a laptop.... I dont think it can be overheating or anynthing like that, and it has a power supply plugged in all the time and the battery is in, so it cant be anything like running out of power. Could it be a virus or spyware or something like that perahps? Please, if anyone knows anything about why this may be happening, and how to fix this problem, please reply to this thread,

Hardware and disk test OK.I believe it is most likely a corrupted windows file or registry.I have the OEM restore disks.Q1. will the restore discs overwrite the data? I suspect they will.Q2. Can I get to the restore point if i can boot the machine to DOS?Q3. What other tactic other than restoring from scratch might work?
I was on my laptop and its battery went down so it went in to hibernation. When I plugged it in it still wasn't coming on so I press the off button until it went off. Now it keeps saying "we appologized for the inconvienince but windows did not start successfully." I pressed "start windows normally" and it just keeps doing the same thing over and over again!

Every time I open a file, I get this message:

It even happens for the "Show Desktop" icon in my Quick Launch bar.
All these files are just on my local hard drive.

here:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1202672,00.asp
What it doesn't tell you is if you DO have something that says DWORD in the registry.
I'm not sure if I should add NoLowDiskSpaceChecks or not
When I look in my Events Viewer I see countless warnings for which the source is Dhcp. Others(but many fewer) have Win 32 k as the source. Others just say "print" as the source and 6161 as the category.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMany new drivers aren't signed by Microsoft so WinXP will warn you or even prevent you from installing new drivers for a device. To prevent this warning or to allow new un-signed drivers to be installed do the following:1. Go to start/run/ then type secpol.msc2. Browse to local policies/security options3. Change "Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior" setting to Silently succeed.4. Reboot Computer.Another helpful hint from tweakxp.comKen P Or, especially if you are using XP Home where there is no secpol.msc, right click on your My Computer icon, click properties, change to the Hardware tab, click the "Driver signing" button and click ignore.

I haven't been to this site for a while and I noticed I'm getting Security Warnings that my security settings has blocked of an ActiveX install. I know how to change those settings, but am reluctant to do so. Can anyone shed some light on this. I occasionally will get similar warnings on other sites, but it is consistant on this one. View 13 Replies View RelatedAn interesting problem. I have a box here that constantly reboots itself. Firstly I thought it may be a cmos problem, so I drained the cmos by removing the battery. Nope. Then I forced the bios to find hardware (I think it's eecd?). No problem finding hardware, but constant reboot. I thought it may be a hard drive problem so I changed the h/d. Nope, still constantly reboots. I took out the cdrom. Nope. I then low level formatted the h/d (the box worked just fine for this, using a cd with the format program, booting from the cd) tried to install a new o/s rebooting again during the install, after several tries got the o/s in the puter boots to the point of xp starting, then reboot or teases the heck out of me by actually opening xp to the welcome screen - then reboot. The box uses XP, the pwr supply is good and I am at a loss.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI come to you with a rather strange problem. I come to you because I have no idea where to begin diagnosing such a problem. I just ordered parts for a brand new computer, built it, and am now running it very happily. However, within the past few days (the computer was finished being built about a week ago), it's started randomly rebooting while undertaking routine tasks in Windows. There seems to be no logical software-related pattern to the reboots so I have no idea what's causing it. It happens thus: audio skips for a few seconds, I hear a click inside the computer, and then it just restarts.
As I said, there seems to be no software pattern to the reboots... The only recent hardware change is that I've put in the Firewire card (it came in later than the rest of the computer, so I ran a few days without it). I almost want to suspect the Firewire card is causing such a problem -- is that reasonable?
In addition to that, I have an external USB hard drive that's failing... it's connected via the Firewire, and one of the restarts happened when I turned off the drive. Assuming that means it's one of those two, could it be the hard drive or the Firewire from that?
