Jan 14, 2009
I first zeroed the HD and then re-installed XP Pro with a clean install but when I boot i get the option to boot from two different operating systems. I even pulled the CMOS battery to clear the bios settings but still get the option. What can I do to remove this?

I have 2 hard drives, one with my data running Windows XP and the other also with data running Windows 98. Right now it is set to boot off the Windows XP drive. Is there an easy way I can set up a dual-boot system to give me a choice on boot-up without clean-installing either OSs? I don't want to lose my data on either drive

Does anyone know how to changing that default choice? I want an administrator account and a public account. In the public account I don't want any right-clicking, changing desktop icons, things like this. I also want all of the things left on the desktop (downloads, shortcuts, etc.) to be gone when they log out. I did look at group policy editor but I don't like it. So I put System Policy Editor on it from a Windows Server 2000 CD.I have a .POL file made already and can't get it to work. Any websites on this would also be great.

After installing xp home edition and doing the necessary backups that i had intended for , i proceeded to reinstall widnows xp media center edition that i successfully performed. Then i had used windows xp hoem edition to transfer all my files back into the xp media center edition.

I'm gonna buy a new gaming PC and I'll have 4GB DDR2. I've heard that on a 32-bit os I will only see about 3.5GB, so I'll have to install the 64-bit os.I've also heard that on a 64-bit os some softwares aren't running well as a 32-bit os. Is it true?

I was running Win XP Home SP3 when it had a problem. This became fatal due to an IER flaw (Idiot Editing Registry.) Having no idea where my original disc was, I purchased and installed XP Pro SP3. Everything is fine except for the minor irritant that on every start up I am given the choice to start either Pro or Home version.I could probably do the one extra mouse click on a million boots for less trouble that it will take to fix it, but it just offends my compulsive sensibilities. Any suggestions on how to make it go to XP Pro without intervention? I have tried uninstallers and none of them see the Home version. I have deleted all the Home version files, which may have been dumb. I thought about a registry cleaner, but decided to ask before I got myself in trouble.

I am working with my son to build a new computer. We need to decide which Microsoft operating system to buy / install. We have a new ASUS motherboard and an Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz (dual core 64 bit). We also have a PCI express 16 graphics card. His primary use is gaming and also MS office applications for school.I have pretty much ruled out XP Pro 64 because I am reading about lack of application and driver support, but open to input on this.We need to choose between XP home, XP Media center, or XP pro (all 32 bit). I am not particularly concerned about Vista upgrade, although I do understand the upgrade path from XP Media includes the full graphical interface improvements in Vista Aero, and the upgrade from XP Home does not.

I am curious to know if "choice.exe" is spyware. I ran one of my anti-spyware programs last night and it listed choice.exe and it's partner file in the Prefetch folder as spyware. I went online and it gave it an "8" on the threat level from 1-10. I quarantined both files to see if I could get some advise before deleting them.

I also have two operating system choices when I boot the computer. I know there is a command to use in the run option to remove the invalid operatings system choice.

The last thing I want ANYONE to see is My Pictures. Why is this damn thing offering THAT place as first choice for dektop wallpapers? I pointed it (browsed to) Windows/Web/Wallpapers but it STILL insists on my pictures included there! And there is no obvious, clear cut way to change it, I have to google all over the place to find the damn answer! Pure wasted time. to remove that place and prevent it from ever showing up as a first choice for wallpapers?

I am unable to boot my PC most of the times.Whenever I switch on my PC,I see the following message nine ot of ten times. DiskError/Boot Faliure Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot media in selected boot device If I press enter after this messages & keep pressing following messages appear from time to time (Not simultaneously). If just after making the switch on, I press F2 key to check the boot device preference
If just after making the switch on , I press f11 key to reach the boot menu I always find the 1.44 MB Floppy option highlighted as the booting choice.(though there had not been any floppy in the floppy drive, I dont have any really)I make the hard disk option highlighted & it solves the problem only a few times. But next time when I try F11 key to check the boot menu again I find 1.44 MB floppy highlighted.

I haven't installed anything new on my computer but today after having my computer shipped to me via UPS I cut on my computer and where the XP load bar screen was I got: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".Seeing this I knew I went into the BIOS setup and tried to turn the system priority to look at the HDD. Instead I only had the option of the DVD drive and the CD drive.I have no idea how to solve this problem and don't have any of the recovery CD's. I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT because like a bad little boy I did not backup my 4 years worth of work.

first i get the HP blue screen. I tried F1, but i dont see my hard drive in the boot menu. I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.
