Deleting Partition From Startup Without CD
Oct 17, 2005the computers im tring to format have 1 6g partition and are running windows xp. all i want to do is get rid of that partition, the computers have no cd drive and i cannot get past the login screen. so somehow i have to format or delete the partition from the startup which i thought would be easy enough but so far i have been unsuccesful.

Oct 5, 2007I decided to format my computer because it was going really slow...So i got paragon partition manager and created a logical partition called "backup" and dragged all my important files into that partition. then i used killdisk to format my C: partition. Now i use my recovery disk and it says " All files, including data files on the user partition will be lost and the original factory shipped files will will be recovered to the users partition." Will this delete my backup partition too? If it does, how do i recover windows while keeping my partition with the backup files on it? The files are reallly important...

Partition Magic wasn't opening correctly, so I used Disk Management to delete a 1 GB swap (logical partition, about in the middle of the physical disk) I searched around the Disk Management tool bar and didn't see anything about "undo"it deleted instantly. No down time to process...
all located within ONE primary partition at the end of physical drive, there were 3 logical partitions: one swap, two NTFS.The two logical NTFS partitions were physically behind the swap partition on the drive. (One 12 GB NTFS partition immediately behind the swap, and a 30 GB NTFS partition behind that) When the swap was instantly deleted, it also *instantly* deleted the 30 GB partition ( < 1 GB free) It left the 12 GB NTFS partition (also < 1 GB free) alone.

Jun 28, 2005Im using WinXP pro. when i right click for a menu sometimes it takes up to 45 seconds for the menu to appear. Also when i delete a file (any size) i takes anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds for my delete file prompt to come up.
ive also reinstalled XP to no avail.

I wish to upgrade to a new larger HDD.I have lost the single copy of the xp operating system that the laptop allows me to make from the backup partition.I have tried to copy both the active partition and the backup partition using Norton Ghost. Both times it did not allow this.How can i copy either of these partitions or get the laptop allow me to make a fresh copy of xp.

Sep 28, 2009I have an old HP Pavilion (A300N) that I purchased at retail some years ago. It came pre-installed w/ XP and a recovery partition in order to re-load the machine. I've recently re-loaded from the recovery partition, but darn if there isn't just gigs of unwanted software on the drive that came along for the ride when I recovered. This is clearly an OEM install of XP, and there is a Windows Product Key stiker on the case of the machine.
Will the OEM product key work if I re-install XP from a retail installation CD? I would be re-installing on the same box, so same internal components, etc. Seems like this should work, but I'd like to get an opinion from the experts here before I invest the time. Having the old XP box available in a clean state is important to me for other backup and redundancy issues here at home.

Nov 16, 2007I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.

I've done a little bit of reading but my question is "Should I reformat the FAT32 to make it more of use to me?".I cant really see the need arising to access older OS files, except .JPG's (photo's I had on my old Windows ME Comp) or "Should I move all my smaller files (documents and photo's) to the FAT32 partition and use the NTFS drive for the bigger files?"

Jan 31, 2007I reinstalled my OS several months ago, and decided that I might want a dual boot in the future. I already had an old, smaller drive in the machine that's labeled the c: drive.
Reading one time that for security purposes it's good to have your OS on a drive other than C:, I decided to not alter the drive lettering.
I then partitioned a new internal hard drive into several logical drives. I formatted the D: partition as a Dos fat32 partition and the rest as NFTS partitions. Somehow, I allowed the D: partition to be the primary partition, while the E: partition which contains the Win 2000 Pro OS Winnt directory is a logical drive.
When I just checked disk management, I noticed that not only is boot.ini on the D: Dos partition, but so is ntldr along with the following Dos setup files:
ndetect.com
arcsetup.exe
arcldr.exe

I'm using Partition magic pro 7 and WinXp pro.
The partition I resized is the primary OS partition which is formatted as NTFS, the adjacent partition is FAT32. How can I get XP to recognise the FAT32 partition again?

After trying by running off a CD I then decided that I would pick up some partitioning software like 'Partition Magic' or some software along that line to do the partition. But somewhere(s) I read that virtual or software partitions are less then a good idea for reasons I don't recall at the moment.
Is that true? If so, why and/or to what extent?
