I have two user accounts on this XP laptop, but my dh always just uses mine. We want to delete his so there's only one account. However, each and every time I try, the program fails to respond and everything freezes. Does anyone know of a way to troubleshoot this?
View 14 RepliesI have the oddest problem thats occuured in the past few days.It appears to be connected with the opening and closing and switching between tasks.For no apparent reason, the window you either want to close or one that's been opened and you need to say click on a button to start a task, just fails to respond. The only way to unfreeze and carry on with your work is to open task manager then you can click on any line of info on the list, dont take any action in task manager, just close it down. Then you can carry on with what you were doing.I'm running a relatively new machine with XP SP3.I've reinstalled XP and I've checked the machine for all sorts of nasties and there's nothing.
This problem can be in programs, browsers (firefox is the worst. If you load a new page, all the URL links will not be accessible, meaning when you mouse over they do not change the cursor, til you do what I mentioned withthe task manager).I have checked the system performance with task manager open and I am not getting any sudden drains on the machine, which is a pretty fast processor (dual core) and working with 4 Gb or RAM.One other thing I noticed. Say you have a page of icons on screen for example in control panel. Single click to highlight one of them and then I would usually double click to perform the action. Now I can't double click because I get a small box open withthe options available open etc.
I have no idea why this is happening, but I reckon it is connected to the problem.I am going nuts with this, because it is adding a lot of time to my PC day constantly having to unfreeze.If anyone can throw some possible causes. I honestly thought the reinstall would fix this once and for all but no such luck.If there's anything I have left out to aptly describe this problem, please ask.
I'd appreciate some help with this and have seen similar threads, but am just not competent to sort this out on my own.Windows Explorer is no longer reading my camera card. It either fails to respond or just loads the thumbnail icon and then seems to stop, although a couple of times I left it for around 30minutes and most of the 70 thumbnails had opened, so I'm not completely sure if it's stopped or if it's just so slow the computer thinks it's not working.It will open them once they are in a folder on the PC and I can transfer them using the Nikon software otherwise I'd have a useless camera!I'm also getting quite a few "Internet Explorer is not responding messages", and after downloading version 8 went back to version 7 but it's still happening.
I am currently running Windows XP. My other half was logged on and he surfs a lot of music sites for latest releases. After one of his uses we started to get this message when we would try to switch users MediaAcck.exe and the computer freezes. It asked you to click cancel or OK and doing either does nothing you also cannot close out by hitting the x in the upper right hand side. The computer does not respond to control alt delete and the only way you can get out of this is to manually shut the computer down. Again the only time it happens is if you are switching log on users. I have run the latest McAfee virus scan it picks up nothing - I also ran spybot and it also comes up with nothing. I ran a search for this file on my c drive and it does not show it exist at all. I am unsure as what to do next

By Freezes, I mean, I have one image on my monitor that's it. The mouse doesn't respond, the keyboard doesn't, nothing brings it out of it. It's ridiculous, and I'm tired of rebooting in the middle of something important.I recently found that the SM Bus Controller Drivers aren't installed, and I'm installing those, would that have anything to do with it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried to use the Remote Assistance facility between two Virtual PCs. Both the virtual PCs can connnect & share files - indeed the remote desktop facility works well. Both are set up in a peer-to-peer setup. When I try a remote assistance, the expert computer tries to log in using the HelpAssistant account - but fails. (The remote assistance request is a file placed in a shared folder.) The expert machine waits on a response from the novice (the novice machine doesn't show any please connect dialog boxes) befor eautomatically closing the connection.

It also won't delete, be moved, or you can't change its name. I've tried Safe Mode but that didnt help either. The name also seems to be taken up by spaces... When I double click it, it makes like a 'bong' sound and it doesnt respond at all, it does absolutely nothing.
Each time i go into a particular folder i get either the message, program can not respond or i get dr watson postmortem debugger.I would like to lnow why this it and how i can reslove it, if i go into one folder all other ones are ok.
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust downloaded the "Checkit PE Diagnostic ESD for DriverAgent" onto a floppy diskette as directed by DriverAgent.com. After placing it into the floppy drive and rebooting as directed, the program began to boot but hung up about halfway through the process and the PC would not boot until I removed the flopppy and then all worked well, except.now the floppy drive will not respond to any commands and the PC freezes completely. It will not respond until I manually shut it down from the tower button. Once I fire it up again all is well until the same happens if I try to use the floppy drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIt started yesterday when I got the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has failed window hundreds of times. I managed to stop that by deleting it from regedit which I did back-up. All the other problems I've been having are still here though. When I start windows, before the login screen, I get an error message from spoolsv.exe. After I login, I get my desktop backround and mouse pointer but nothing else. I run task manager and am able to run explorer from there. Everything starts up but many progams fail, most of which I have no idea what they are. After visiting many sites regarding the DrWatson problem, I downloaded many anti-virus programs such as Spy Sweeper and Spybot but they fail when I go to run them. I've tried free online scans but they stop in the middle of scanning. No problems with my browser, the scans just stop. I would love to simply re-install windows but my CD drive won't open, not even when I use the pinhole. System Restore fails when I run it
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had a game Counter-Strike and it requires Steam to run it. In the Steam folder there's also a Bin Folder that wont seem to delete. I click on it, but all it does is lag my computer for about 5 minutes, well more like freeze. And in the end i can't delete the folder.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThrough out the day, I have my computer on. Many times... whether I am using the computer at that moment, or if I leave and come back later... my screen will be frozen. The mouse moves, but nothing on the screen can be clicked. Also, control alt delete works as well, so I have found that if I go into the applications tab and open a new task and open/refresh "explorer" everything will start working again.

Seriously it can be sitting there doing nothing or I will have the video camera program turned on, and for no apparent reason, it will just freeze up, and the only way to get it to work again is to reboot it. I have tried updating the mouse, sound, video drivers - the mouse was acting kinda wierd one day - it just seemed sluggish so I updated the driver for it. The sound driver needed to be updated so I could get rid of the yellow question mark in the hardware profile and that is gone and I thought that fixed it but later that same day, it just froze again. Now there is no set time or anything like that, there are days that it will work perfectly all day and then the next day it will freeze after being on for 20 minutes or less, and there are days that it will work for 4 hours and then freeze

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"

My gilrfriends son messed up her Media Center computer and his father used F10 instead of system restore, but the files are still there. To prevent this from occurring again, my girlfriend asked me to password protect the computer. I set myself up as the adminstrator, since I build computers and have the most knowledge, but have only been using XP for the past 6 months. I've read that the account is now hidden and know how to access it from safe mode. When I set it up, it asked me if I wanted to protect the
files and folders, such as My Documents. Stupid me did this. Now even though I have set my girlfriend up with an adminstator account, I can't find a way to share or allow her to access those files, and all her pics are there. I also can't delete the admistrator account I made, even though it says that can be done through her adminstrator account, but there is no option there. I want to do two things. I want to unprotect the files and folders I made private, and I want to delete the adminstrator account I made. F10 restore or system restore won't even do this.

I can delete the contents of the folder, but can't delete the folder itself. The error I receive is: Cannot delete "xxxyyyxxx" : It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. I have attempted to delete runnign in safe mode.

Step # 1.Go to this site and download Microsofts uninstaller and run it and if the program you want to get rid of is on the list select it and remove from your computer.
Step # 2. Click on start , click on run, type regedit, and when it opens click on HKey local machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, click on the plus sign for uninstall and it opens all the programs installed on your computer , scroll and see if the program you want to get rid of is on the listif it is right click on it and delete it.
Step # 3. Click on start, click on run, type msconfig, and when it opens click on BOOT.INI and check the box that says, SAFE MODE. Boot the computer to safe mode and when it opens click on DRIVE C and click on program files and click on the folder of the program you want to delete from your computer and delete it. Then click on the common files folder and see if it is in there and if it is delete it. Important now, go back to click on start, click on run, type msconfig, and when it opens click on BOOT.INI and uncheck the box that says, SAFE MODE or you will boot to safe mode again.Once I remembered doing all the above steps and it still started up so I ran hijackthis and deleted the entries and it was gone for good.

I can be doing anything, so not even be around the computer and it freezes, could freeze on the screen saver, or when im on hte internet, or playin a game, or writing an email anything.... not an overheating problem because it has happened say right after its done booting, or 5 mins after running or say 12 hours after being on.... or jsut not freeze seems to be really random
