Computers Userinit - Password - BIOS
Dec 27, 2007
i found out my computers userinit.exe has been changed and it is causing my computer to ask for a password when i never set one to begin with and it keeps logging on and off....along with other things. This recently happened with a virus and i dont have the XP cd. Is there a way i can rewrite the registry to userinit.exe thru bios? or any other program? I have a program called <reference removed> but have no idea how to use it.

once the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap

I have been trying to boot from a cd to launch a repair disk, i have the blue screen.
But the promblem (other than the BSoD) is that my Bios is asking for a password and i've never put a password on it. I wouldn't know how. It's a dell laptop so is it possible that dell put it on? Or is this a virus of some kind?

I ran a spyware program and now the computer logs off as soon as I log on.I cannot remote into it because my network won't find it. I've booted into the recovery console to the command prompt and followed everyone's instructions except that I don't have userinit.exe or wsaupdater.exe??? What gives? Can I just rebuild the boot? MBR? Is thre a way to edit the registry from the dos prompt.

I accidently deleted the userinit.exe file, creating the log on/log off problem. I have gone into the recovery console, navigated to C:/WINDOWS/system32, but when i tried "copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe" it says the system cannot find the file specified. Help ?

Very confident about your capacity to assist here.Windows won't start up on my badly-infected WinXP PIV. It gets past the logging on to windows prompt and then this error message comes up userinit.exe application error (0xc0000005) and Windows then fails to load completely. This also occurs in safe mode and I haven't been able to bypass Windows and boot directly to DOS by using the F8 key on startup.

Back about three weeks ago, in an effort to speed up my start-up on my computer, I ran Cleaner. It identified all the start up things. I went through one by one and disabled those that I had checked on a registry database. Unfortunately one of the first I disable was USERINIT.EXE.Now, as some of you may know, I can't login to my computer! I can power on, and try to log in, the windows attempts to load my preferences, and then logs out. Over the past several weeks, I have tried in vain to get some helpful suggestions on how to remedy the situation, but obviously my range of knowledge in dealing with this type of problem isn't strong enough to figure it all out. It was suggested by a friend that I just do a ffr, but quite frankly, I see that as a last ditch effort. I have files on the computer, that I really don't want to lose. And it seems that as I know what the problem is....there must be someway to fix it without going to the extreme. As my computer is 3-4 yrs old, my windows CD was only for SP1, and I don't think that would help....although I don't really know.

After I log into my computer at my windows login screen, it instantly kicks me back to the login screen. After reading several posts online I have come to believe that my userinit.exe file has been deleted or that virus has somehow altered it. I want to reinstall a copy of the file from a windows xp media boot CD, however I only have a friends recovery disk and it is for his brand of computer so it doesnt recognize it when i boot my system. I dont have a floppy drive, is there any other way to get a dos prompt at start-up so I can manually extract userinit.exe to system32? Should I slave the drive on a different computer and copy and paste it?
Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP2)

I would appreciate any useful information. Making sly remarks is childish.I to have received the message: "USERINIT.exe Application failed to initialize" after removing software that was previously install and may have been causing the computer to not get a TCP/IP number. Now I can not get to the desktop, It hangs.
I agree sometimes reloading a cleaned of hard drive may be the only way to resolve a problem. However, first see if there are any quick fixes that may save some time.
If all you can say is start over again from scratch then you are wasting your time and everyone else's that reads for some answers.

This is a past post that someone else posted but I'm having the same problem and I did not understand the solution. Here is what he put:"Windows won't start up on my badly-infected WinXP PIV. This also occurs in safe mode and I haven't been able to bypass Windows and boot directly to DOS by using the F8 key on startup."
This is exactl my issue except I haven't tried to go to Dos mode b/c I didn't know how. This was his reply..."See if this helps:Restore WinlogonUserinit

I am fed up with the logon/logoff loop. Is there any way to get past it, just once, because i have a regtool that fixes the registry chop-chop! All I need is to get into Windows once or twice. I have tried The boot to recovery console, then "copy userinit.exe wsupdater.exe" and still it did not work.

I need help. My computer will not boot up properly. I keep getting the same error message "userinit.exe" failed to initialise. I tried a systems recovery but this also failed. (I received the message pciide.sys not found). Sometimes through task manager I can enable desktop but most times nothing happens just a blue screen. My operating system is XP SP2.

Running winXP.I recently accidentally deleted Userinit.exe due to a false positive. Desktop would not load up but could still run programs.read somewhere that userinit.exe ran explorer.exe so tried running that from run.would start to work, brought desktop n everything up, but would freeze.on a whim i opened the control panel from run to see if there was anything i could do from there. When i ran control, it started my desktop and everything worked just fine.
Since then, i can start everything normally from running control when i start up. but i imagine it would still be healthier for my computer in general to have userinit working properly. however, here is where my computer knoledge fades. from reading other similar probs, it would seem that userinit has different parts? reg keys ect. only part of the whole working userinit configuration or whatever seems to have been deleted, since reading others who have had it fail completely dont appear to be able to do anything with their comps. so wondering how i can go about finding out which part i need to replace/fix. looked in i386, and there is a userinit, but when i go to copy it over to sys32, says overwrite? i didnt, since i would assume that means that part is fine. any ideas on what i need to replace?

I have had windows XP Pro installed, updated and running fine until about a week ago. I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.

When I turn on my computer, it does the bios check, then goes into the bios screen on its own. I have checked all of the bios settings, and see nothing set wrong. The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

Got a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine. Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute. This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

I already read that you can really mess up your PC if you do one thing wrong when upgrading. Am I a fool for buying the upgrade? Please let me know as I can send the Floppy discs back.
