Computer Won't Boot From Gateway Screen
Nov 12, 2009
I have what I perceive to be a big problem with my pc. I somehow deleted the necessary files to boot the computer. I have tried to boot in safe mode, but when I get to the screen to boot in safe mode and hit enter to boot it goes back to the gateway screen.

I have a Gateway laptop that won't boot up properly. Sometimes it will go to the Windows screen that has the bar at the bottom like it is loading and then it will just restart. But here lately it has been just going to the screen that asks if you want to start in safe mode and all the other choices. But it just locks up and won't go from there. I think that my hard drive is messed up. I just ordered a new hdd. Can I just change the hdd to fix it or is it something else?

I have a Gateway 7210XG Laptop which has worked perfectly since I bought it in January of this year. Until I allowed Norton anti-virus to install new virus definitions and application s/w yesterday morning. That install requested a reboot. I continued what I was doing instead of rebooting right away. When I was done I clicked on OK and the machine shut down. I can't be sure but I think I saw from the corner of my eye a message flash on the screen and it hung up.

Trying to fix this for a freind. Computer will not boot from hard drive. Needing to keep the data on the hard drive. Any other (easier) method than buying an adapter and installing the hard drive into another system to back up.

I am trying to fix a Gateway MX3702 Notebook for a suitemate of mine. When it starts up, it loads the initial Gateway bootscreen, and then goes to a black screen for approximately 5-10 minutes. After that a loading bar appears across the bottom of the screen, and it takes about 30 more minutes to fully load. After that load XP starts up fine and there are no other discernable problems

my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.
Next time, generally it would work perfect. So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

My other computer, running XP, was working ok but then started ignoring actions. The internet was still working but Windows games and other desktop items refused to work. Time to reboot. Since then, the only thing it does is boot to a screen with what looks like blue skyscrapers with +hp written on it. Nothing else happens. It just sits there with no buttons and has no response to any keys. I'm not sure if I have the origional XP disc because it was a used computer Not much fun working on the old 98 which is on this computer.

A few weeks ago i had a problem with my computer where it would boot up until the XP logo with the blue scrolling bar, where it would freeze. I tried everything until i had no other choice but to format and re-install windows. Since this my computer has been very slow starting and increasingly so over the past week or so. After a defrag a couple of days ago it has pretty much gone haywire.I repeatedly got explorer error messages followed by dr watson debugger errors. Other problems include seemingly random restarts and general slowness after booting. Upon starting it this morning, it gets past the xp logo but then just displays a black screen. If i press space it asks me to select a hardware profile but this just does the same as previously mentioned. Also the hard drive light on the case is on constantly, as if to indicate that it is doing something.
I cannot boot into safe mode, as the system freezes at 'Mup.sys'. There is not much that i can do seeing as i can't get into windows. I also do not own a windows xp cd as my computer is a HP and did not come with an xp disk. i do however have a copy of their recovery disk, but i want to avoid using this as it will only wipe all my data which i do not want to lose.I am beginning to think it is the motherboard. any thoughts? temperature is at about 78 C at the moment, which sems about normal. both fans seem to be running as normal.

I wanted to know how I could find out what the text was on my computer when it starts up for the first time. I start it, then the screen is blank, then some white text appears on a black background, but only for a few miliseconds. then the text disappears and the main 'windows' start up logo comes up, before the desktop finally appears and the computer is ready to be used. I was wondering how I could find out what the white text said, before the windows pre-logMy computer is windows XP professional, version 2002, service pack 2

My computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen

I have a dell Pentium 4 with XP service pack 2 installed, that has suddenly stopped booting. All I am getting is a blue screen with the stop error 0x00000024, which I believe means the ntfs file may be corrupted. I cannot do anything in safe mode or last known good or any other choices that might be available. Every time I try to do anything I get the blue screen immediately. The biggest problem seems to be that I cannot boot from the windows CD either. I don't know why, it just goes right by it. I have tried moving it up in the boot order in the bios but it made no difference. Is there anything else I can do to get that CD to boot or find a way to access it? Right now I seem to have no way to repair this problem.

When I turn my computer on it goes to the blue hp logo and then to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. If I hit f8 when booting it gives me 2 options...f1 to setup and f2 to resume. It won't let me go into safe mode or anything. I have tried booting from the xp cd, but nothing happens. I have tried replacing the battery and that hasn't done anything. It started when trying to open a program, the computer just went blank. When trying to reboot, this mess started. Also, I just got this error message, which is new.i got it after I unplugged the computer for awhile.. warning 251: system cmos checksum bad dafalut config used

I'm new to this site and I'm not very tech savy, but anyways I'm running a basic, older model e-machines computer with windows xp sp3. When I turn it on it gives me a couple of choices; start windows normally, start in safe mode, last configuration that worked etc. Anyway I've tried all of them and the same thing happens, it goes to the boot screen for a few seconds and then it shuts off, anyone know about this problem? .

I had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.

its my previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:
Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2
Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help!

On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.
I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.
Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.
Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

It worked but he didn't have any of the disks that came with it. It is a Gateway and looks like it has hardly been used. When we turned it on it tried to boot at Windows XP Professional setup and asks for the CD that XP Pro comes on. Which of course we don't have. On closer inspection we realized that the computer originally had Windows ME installed on it and someone must have started to install XP Pro on it and either got an error or they stopped before setup could finish. Needless to say I can't get what little I know to work to fix it. I can't get a prompt and it won't even boot in safe mode. I have Windows Xp Home Edition on the computer that I am currently using and hoped that maybe the missing files may have been something they had in common. They start out with I386, like I386OEMBIOS.CAT.

I have a Gateway computer that’s about 4 years old running Windows 98. It includes a Gateway VGA monitor (model EV700). I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows using their resource CD’s. Everything is fine now except the monitor will only display the lowest resolution settings. I have tried to change the resolution through the display icon in control panel, but it will not allow me to increase the resolution. I have even gone to the Gateway web site and download the latest driver for this monitor, but still have the same results.
As a result, the monitor will no longer display graphics of any kind while on the internet or while working with photo imaging software.

when I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : windowssystem32configsystem."
You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?

Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?
