Assign A Drive Each Time / Use Any Portable Device
Aug 14, 2006
I recently had a new Asus K8V-MX Motherboard fitted to my three year-old Mesh Matrix computer, since which time, no portable devices are seen in My Computer. They are picked up and correctly identified on the systray, but each time I want to use any flash drive or portable device I have to assign it a drive letter through Windows XP (Home Edition) Disk Management.Even then it is only visible in Windows Explorer where I can actually see and access my files. No portable device ever shows up in My Computer. If I unplug the device and plug it in again, without having rebooted, although the letter still appears in the list of drives, I have to add a new letter to the same device in order to be able to see the files on it once more. If I reboot, the drive vanishes, and I have to start over again.

This is not really a tweak as such, just a very simple thing you could do with your digital camera that most people don't think about.Do you have a digital camera that shows up as a removable storage device in explorer? Well, start using it as one!You can use the memory cards on your camera for storing documents mp3's or whatever you choose to store there. Perfect if you need to bring some files to a friend, but the files won't fit on a diskette and you don't have a CD burner - just save it on the camera!

if we can assign a letter for a drive [for example, C:], then, can I assign a letter to a folder? Because when I save/open a file or anything like that, I can just type the letter of the drive if I want to access a drive

I had to reinstall XP because of spyware issues. I saved important data on my slave drive. I reinstalled XP. Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.

I have windows xp on an emachine t2642 and I have installed new service pack2, computer running fine up to this point(only 6 months old). I installed an iomagic dvd burner yesterday and what a mess. xp would not assign a drive letter to this burner. I have an external hard drive taking up drive letter e d drive is my cd burner. there is a mysterious drive letter "f" I spent about 6 hours trying to discover what drive letter "f" is to no avail. I might add, bios recognized all and I could see all in device manager. it was in "my computer" that I could not get access or see second burner or second hard drive. if this sounds familiar or if you have any questions for me, feel free to do so and thanks in advance for any help with this matter. I might ad at this time, I have unhooked my old cd burner and have made dvd burner master and reconnected my external hard drive.

Ever wanted to convert your internal Zip Drive to a portable one? Purchase a Mobile Hard Disk Rack. Install your internal Zip Drive to the Rack. XP will automatically recognize the Zip Drive and you are good to go!

I just would like to ask one more on this . Can I assign any available drive letter to a active partition that I create or does XP expect me to assign the next available in reverse order? As you can see in Disk Managment that I have Drives F;G;H;I listed and under Network Drives I have Q Thru Z. I thought my picture cards used Drives F;G;H;I ?

Recommend me a free program to basically copy files from windows to the portable hard drive? I don't need compression, and I don't want the entire backup in one file, like .zip or .bkf. Normally I would just copy the files over, but I would lose the timestamps and all the attributes.

Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable. Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.
After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is defeated. The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive (F:SoftwarePortableStartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).
As a lay person, my guess is that something necessary for properly installing the programs was lost when I formated the drive. However, I do not see why this should happen, because the hard drive on my home computer has been formated more than once when it became infected, but there was never any problem with installing software afterwards.

I have an external USB 2.0 case with a 160GB HD that was working just fine until a couple of days ago when I stopped the drive and unplugged it from the PC. Next time I connected the drive to the same PC, I got a message saying "There was a problem installing your device" and in the Properties window for the device a Code 10 appears. I connected the same drive to a different computer and it is working perfectly. I uninstalled the device and reinstalled it again but the problem still persists.

My friend just installed XP on his computer using the CD and now, ironically, XP doesn't detect the CD-Rom drive on the system. No CD-Rom drive in either Device Manager, Windows Explorer, or My Computer. The Add Hardware Wizard doesn't detect a CD-rom drive either. All the cables are intact as well. What could be wrong or do I need to provide more specific information on his system?

Reformatting a pc of mine to give to my sister. Her old computer had some info on its hard drive that she needed. It was too big to fit on a floppy and the CDROM had died so I took her old drive and hooked it up in the newer pc. The problem is: it shows up in System Devices but not in Windows Explorer. I tried right clicking on My Computer and then Manage to assign a drive letter to it, but it wont allow me. The option for assigning a drive letter isnt even available for that hard drive.

I recently installed a CD drive and upon rebooting, the secondary drive (D), although recognized by the startup (BIOS), is no longer present when Windows finally opens. It's not present in the device manager and all shortcuts to it are null. All the bables are correctly installed and I've tried rebooting, re-installing the drive to no avail.

I've been using an USB enclosure successfully for some time with no problem. I upgraded to a Maxtor 100 gig in the same enclosure. When turned on it does the "plug and play" chimes and it shows up in the device manager as installed and working properly. But it is not shown in My Computer as a drive letter.

My back up hard drive is not showing in my explorer list though. Does anybody know how I may access it? I've installed all motherboard software and it still is not there. I don't wanna reformat that drive unless its the only thing i can do.

I tried to run a knoppix (live linux distro) cd and changed the boot order (F2 setup) to boot from cd. Ok... the cd still wouldnt boot, so I went into F2 again and made all devices non-bootable except the cd player. When I tried this method... I was informed that my cd drive isnt a bootable device. I checked a few settings but couldnt find anything in regards to this. Im just trying to boot from my cd player.

I have a bit of a problem, for some reason my system is showing "unknown" in my device manager, the only hardware that has been installed on this system is a new video card, (radeon HD5570) that seemed to go in without a hitch. Simultaneously, with this appearing I started having issues with windows media player not play .mod files, using web help it says that I need to update my audio drivers, but according to Dell they are good. Would really like some help with this.

I created a mess (but I'm learning more each day), and after a week got it going at least, but on boot got messagae "primary hard disc drive 1 not found" which required clicking F1 to continue. I ended up reinstalling XP, got everything up and running, but still have the HD message at each boot. I've passed all of the diagnostics in Set-Up, and found nothing on any of the troubleshooting sites that helped. Set-up says: Primary Drive 0 - Hard Drive; Primary Drive 1 - Unknown Device; Secondary Drives 0 adn 1 are both CD-ROM Readers. Everything works just fine, but I'd like to figure the drive problem. I had to create a partition for the reinstall - had no choice.

After an entire weekend working on this project, I am beat. I have a client who has a Windows NT Server and is replacing a 4 GB SCSI hard drive with a 20 GB IDE. System sees the new drive. I have used Ghost to create the clone of the original drive from the 4 GB SCSI to the 20 GB IDE. That worked fine. However, after removing the SCSI drive to boot from the 20 GB IDE, I repeatedly obtain the STOP: 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. I have been in contact with Symantec and they have not been of much help. I have seen the article from Microsoft regarding the error as well but have not had much luck.
My question is by chance, has anyone else experienced a similiar situation and what has been your resolution? I would be extremely grateful to anyone who may have an answer to this problem.
Thank you for any help you may provide. I have not seen a similiar thread here on this forum of a clone from a SCSI to an IDE.

only 1 user, 33 processes, ewido and adaware SE scanned free -- but simply opening a word doc made the system hang over and over. Found I could open and print by running Word and opening the files from the 'open file menu' -- did this 12 times, fine. But try to double-click the same file that just printed -- hangs (and same for other files e.g. image files). the Folder showed on two lines in TaskManager Applications ''Not responding'' and no other applications; I did try cleaning registry ist time ever in nearly 4yo computer, restart seemed fine. But still hung on any particular file even with other applications (ie not just Word). Defragged but no better. Then thought of ChkDsk....It asked for restart to access certain windows files......now I canot tell whether CHKDSK is doing something or its just stuck in failing to boot.
