All Icons Have Turned Black
Sep 23, 2005
Hi all running Xp pro sp2 on Athlon Xp2600 with 1gig ram. Recently all my icons have turned black , no pictures just a black square with the name below it . This effects desktop start menu etc. After a while icons on the task bar come back and the quick start ones reappear but none of the rest of them do ,no matter how long I leave the pc on for . Anyone any ideas how to fix this ?. BTW most of the icons were standard windows ones no custom jobs.

Windows firewall Just like magic, much of the text on my computer turned from black to blue. For example, all the text I've typed in to label my photos is now all blue, it was black when I originally typed it. All the text I typed in under my document files had turned to blue as well. Not all the text on the computer has turned to blue, just mostly in documents and photos. I have no idea how this happened. Does anybody know how I can change it back to the original color, black. I really have tried everything I can think of and so far nothing works.

Shutting down a game many of my desktop icons e.g. recycle bin, network environment and all the shortcut folder icons created by myself suddenly turned to square (undefined) default icons that are familiar to us from Windows 95. When I click 'My Computer' I discover that also the icon of drive C and the floppydisk 3,5 drive icon have changed to default icons. Additionally, all the standart yellow foldericons now show default icons.
Before I have occasionaly used register cleaning programmes such as the free CCleaner and the Uniblues shareware Registry Booster with no problems. I have always taken a complete backup of the Register in case something goes wrong. Also, I have understood that no change in the register takes effect unless you restart the computer. Am I wrong here?
After a quick check I notice that all the installed software function correctly. All written documents are there and they open correctly in their respective programmes. I've tried to change the icons by right clicking "properties/customise/change icon" but it doesn't work. The computer does not allow you to change the icons that vanished. When you try to change the icon, you are by default navigated to system 32 folder with shell32.dll file. I presume this is the main icon library of xp. All the pictures are present there but those that are "broken" approx. 12 of them showed at the beginning of the list cannot be used anymore, for instance the standard yellow folder icon among them. The rest of the icons (say 100 or more of them) are available..............

I downloaded an msstyles theme for a recent XP install on my new HD. Unfortunately, the theme made everything black, except a few icons. I can't see anything in order to change it back. Fortunately, I still have a version of XP on my old HD and changed the boot order. The new HD with the screwed up theme is accessible in Windows explorer. How do I change the theme on that copy of Windows back to normal?

My Windows Firewall automatically turns off every time i reboot. Is this because Norton Antivirus has its own internal firewall? If it is because of Norton, is it ok to leave the Windows Firewall turned off? I'm concerned that my computer isn't adequately secured.

Any suggestions on how to keep "SmartScreen Filter" always turned ON?

MacAfee automatically updated and said it needed to restart. So I hit restart as nothing was running at the time. When the computer tried to restart it took FOREVER, at least 5 minutes. When it finally did come up, none of the links work. I treid to get into System Restore, it said System Restore had been turned off. News to me I never turn System Restore off. No access to the internet. Go to printers it shows no printers installed. Most programs, if you try to run them they either don't open, or open and close abruptly, or with McAfee it opens with nothing inside the box. Or if you try to do something like turn the System Restore on, the program stops responding. I actually did a registry edit to turn it on, but it still won't let me set a new restore point, and it says there are no old restore points. Basically the computer is totally unusable. So now I boot in SAFE MODE. Doesn't do much for me but allows me to look around. So I reboot in SAFE MODE Directory Services which says the drive is clean and the computer now works great in this Directory Services mode.

Just experienced a very strange situation. We have several hundred XP clients on an NT Domain. We disable windows firewall. Over the weekend we upgraded our NT 4 Domain to Windows 2003 Mixed Mode Active Directory. We are now seeing today and yesterday some machines have the windows firewall enabled. We discoverd the problem due to an older legacy application we have had stopped working. The application was working yesterday (2 days after the upgrade) but today it was not. The machines experiencing the problem are located in seperate office and seperate departments. so far we have seen only about 15 with the firewall enabled. As we just upgraded we dont have any GPO's in place that would enable this. We dont have any other automated
customization tools that were configured to do this either. Is there any log file or any way to determine when/by who the firewall was enabled. The users of the machines dont have admin rights so we know it was
not them.

For some strange reason every so often and usually when I start-up my keyboard turns into a set of hotkeys for Windows related programs. For example if I press 'F' it opens up the search feature, press 'M' and it opens up my computer etc. When I press ctrl+alt+del to open the task manager then close it the hotkeys stop for a second and start typing properly, however after a sentence or two they all become hotkeys again. I also noticed sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't, it's very random.I'm using Windows XP sp1. I don't know of anymore information which would be useful but any info is available on request.

Recently I had some problems with my OS in that when I re-booted I began getting the disk check utility running and it found bad clusters in my hard drive. My hard drive is partitioned into a C drive with only the OS and programs on it and a D drive with all my files saved there. The scandisk found bad clusters in both partitions. When I chose the automatically repair option I thought my problems would be fixed. Instead what happened was that it took a folder which had about 200 mp3's in it and converted it into a file with no file extension. So it isn't even recongnized by my OS.

Look at his pc and i cant open anything. tried to start at CMD and cant even get started to look at his system. His norton apperantly was turned off by 'outside' source. Does this sound like only solution is to wipe HD and re-install OS ? If so, how hard is it to wipe. Has a mass produced HPpavilion 523n.
