Xp Pro (pre-isntalled OEM) UPGRADE To Pro (retail)
Mar 14, 2008
if I upgrade my friends comp from xp home to xp pro that NONE of her data will be lost and will work EXACTLY the same as before only just PRO installed. This is because she has messed up her computer and I am going to fix it. But I do not want to do a clean install. When the system is in the boot area and asks me to install XPP do I have it do a recovery install etc?

I know im the wrong forum but ME doesn't get looked at much anymore. I need to know this so as to reinstall XP upgrade retail edition. Thought you long timers in this forum would be able to help me. I have a full retail ver.of ME. IT comes with 2 discs. 1-OS 2-Boot floppy . MY boot floppy was erased. I can't reinstall ME without this boot floppy on an empty drive . Has anyone used anything from bootdisc.com? or any other site for this such thing. I know MS probably still has some around but try to buy one.

the installation key is not Valid. I have the OEM key and I want to change it. I tried the tool (KeyUpdateTool_enu.exe) to change key. but it gives an error.
Then I used the registry edit method, and it doesn't accept the OEM key.

I'm looking on Newegg right now, and see that there is a Retail version of Windows and an OEM version of Windows, but yet they fail to describe what comes in each one.So, which one should I buy? The Retail or the OEM? Money isn't an issue at this moment, so if the Retail is recommended, I could get it.

Whats the difference??? I just want to install an OS on my daughter's system (I'm building). There seems to be big price differences just looking at XP home. I thought I should stay with retail because I have so little expertise and thought the package would be more complete (less for me to be expected to know

Currently running "98se" and want to switch up to "Windows 2000 pro.". What is the difference between the "Windows 2000 OEM" version and the "Windows 2000 Retail" version. With the "OEM" version they talk about accompanying hardware per Microsoft requirements (which may or may not work with my system)? What should I look for If buying the "OEM" version (COA etc.) "OEM" seems to be alot less expensive, but I need to know what I'm getting.

Download the "Corp" version of Win XP Pro, file-sharing or torrent, and then run validation, fail, and get MS to sell you a retail copy of 1/2 price. Do the same thing, download Corp XP Pro. Burn a copy to CD on a computer it isn't install on, make up a receipt, and go to the Library and do a search of newspapers for computer shows from a couple years ago.Fill out the forms MS gives you and send in with the CD and receipt, and get MS to send you a retail copy for free. OK, I'm not really advocating anybody doing this, just trying to make a point. If someone is gonna pirate XP to begin with, what makes MS think that people won't be doing things like this? Why isn't retail XP sold at the price that is being offered to people with pirated Windows to begin with?

I recently brought a laptop with XP Home preloaded, but as I had a retail CD of XP
pro I thought I'd boot from that CD and run setup which includes a full reformat.
I now have XP pro up and running, but I get an annoying "dual boot" screen giving
a choice of XP pro and XP home! How can I get rid of this dual boot screen as XP
Home no longer exists?

On my old comp. I tried to swap P2 350/512 100/2.0V S1 to P2 450/512 2.0V including heat sink and fan. After booting the screen was black with nothing on it , when I removed CPUand booted without any CPU in I had the same result.Reinstalled the P2 350 CPU and everything works fine. P2 450 was taken out from working comp.It looks like both CPU's have slot1 connection and fitted well in the socked.

Microsoft has advised that there will be a SP3 upgrade for Windows XP, but it will not be released until after Windows Vista is released. Internet Explorer 7.0 will not be part of the SP3 upgrade. It will be made available separately and will be supported by SP3.

so I've found somewhere that sells Windows XP for a reasonable price as an OEM. Now I've been told that that means I have to install from a completely blank harddrive but my PC is around 3-5 years old and my friend says that it might not be compatable with XP. is there any way I can tell as I don't want to buy WinXP only to find it messes up my PC.

I bought a computer last year with XP. I read today that since April there has been no support for XP and the suggestion was to upgrade to 7. I read the instructions and it's way too complicated for me. Then I read that 7 users can downgrade to XP.I don't get it.I just would like to know: Can I safely stay with XP for a couple of years?

I have a computer with Windows 2000 Pro on it and I wanted to upgrade it to Windows XP Pro using an unused Windows XP Pro CD/license (Version 2002, it says) I have. However, when I stuck in the CD and selected "Install XP Pro," it told me "Windows XP Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional to Microsoft Windows XP Professional."
So it will only let me do a clean install. Is this because I have an OEM CD meant for a new computer? I thought you could upgrade (rather than re-install) to XP from any genuine XP CD?
