if I upgrade my friends comp from xp home to xp pro that NONE of her data will be lost and will work EXACTLY the same as before only just PRO installed. This is because she has messed up her computer and I am going to fix it. But I do not want to do a clean install. When the system is in the boot area and asks me to install XPP do I have it do a recovery install etc?

Thought you long timers in this forum would be able to help me. I have a full retail ver.of ME. IT comes with 2 discs. 1-OS 2-Boot floppy . MY boot floppy was erased. I can't reinstall ME without this boot floppy on an empty drive . Has anyone used anything from bootdisc.com? or any other site for this such thing. I know MS probably still has some around but try to buy one.

Then I used the registry edit method, and it doesn't accept the OEM key.
I'm looking on Newegg right now, and see that there is a Retail version of Windows and an OEM version of Windows, but yet they fail to describe what comes in each one.So, which one should I buy? The Retail or the OEM? Money isn't an issue at this moment, so if the Retail is recommended, I could get it.

With the "OEM" version they talk about accompanying hardware per Microsoft requirements (which may or may not work with my system)? Do the same thing, download Corp XP Pro. Burn a copy to CD on a computer it isn't install on, make up a receipt, and go to the Library and do a search of newspapers for computer shows from a couple years ago.Fill out the forms MS gives you and send in with the CD and receipt, and get MS to send you a retail copy for free. OK, I'm not really advocating anybody doing this, just trying to make a point. If someone is gonna pirate XP to begin with, what makes MS think that people won't be doing things like this? I tried to swap P2 350/512 100/2.0V S1 to P2 450/512 2.0V including heat sink and fan.After booting the screen was black with nothing on it , when I removed CPUand booted without any CPU in I had the same result.Reinstalled the P2 350 CPU and everything works fine. P2 450 was taken out from working comp.It looks like both CPU's have slot1 connection and fitted well in the socked.

However, when I stuck in the CD and selected "Install XP Pro," it told me "Windows XP Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional to Microsoft Windows XP Professional."
So it will only let me do a clean install. Is this because I have an OEM CD meant for a new computer? I thought you could upgrade (rather than re-install) to XP from any genuine XP CD?
