Wireless Zero Configuration Service Shuts Down
Mar 18, 2007
Every time I shut down my Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows' Wireless Zero Configuration service shuts down. So, everytime I start the computer, I have to restart the service, go into Wireless Network Connection Properties and reclick "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" to be able to access the internet. Is there a way to make sure WZC stays on permanently? When I hit START on the activity, I'm not given the option to hit APPLY.

Thinkpad T30 running XP pro. In order to use my wireless network I must run the services.msc program to start the wireless. I can connect to my neighbors unsecured wireless automatically but not my own secured network. Microsoft Bulletin # 871122 explains how to run the program but it is required to run every time I reboot. How do I permanently make the change?

I am living in a shared residence and the guys here are running wireless adsl. It is an infrastructure network using 128bit WEP encryption. I'm not sure about their hardware but I am using an asus 54mbps usb stick. I have no problmes logging on but for some reason the wireless config. program automatically checks the "the key is provided for me automatically" option in the network properties. Now this prevents me from getting access to the network after any sort of disconnection. If I uncheck this box the stars in the key field (representing the WEP key) dissappear and so the key needs to be reentered. It only does this some times and since I don't have a copy of the key (the network administrator enters it on my computer) every couple of days I need to get the key re-entered on my computer. It is a real hassle and I can't work out why windows keeps defaulting to this option of having the key provided automatically.

My Compaq running on Windows XP Home has suddenly and mysteriously started running at high CPU's (almost 100%) at boot. From Task Manager, I could see that it was the svchost.exe that was running high. I contacted Microsoft and after 2 1/2 hours of shutting down literally every process and then slowly re-adding them, it was found that it is the wireless zero config that is running all of the CPU's. I am on a laptop (wireless through DSL - sbcglobal - and using a linksys router which is running at 11 - maximum connection)downstairs. I have NEVER had a problem until 2 days ago. I have added NOTHING to the computer.
I can sit directly next to the router (upstairs) and the CPU will drop, but not completely. When I plug into Linksys using ethernet, the CPU stops to 1% - and the computer resets itself. It will be fine the rest of the day. I have also had success unplugging Linksys for about 5 minutes (while sitting next to it) and that also seems to reset the CPU usage. HOWEVER - if I restart, either from warm or cold boot, the same cycle happens all over.Linksys gave me a patch, which has done nothing. They said if it was a Linksys problem, the patch would have fixed it.Microsoft can't help - it is a wireless issue.SBC can't help - it is a Linksys issueI haven't yet called Compaq because I am afraid they will tell me that the high CPU is due to a failing in my internal wireless. THE Presario 3240US IS 4 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN GREAT - NEVER ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS! Obviously, the computer is having to work too hard to connect to the wireless system, thus the high CPU's. And, when it runs high, I have problems with the internet slowing down. Anyone out there ever had this problem? Is it time for a new computer?

I have been using a Belkin Wireless Router on my XP Pro system for some time but now it will not connect to the web. I think the problem has been caused by a virus but my system appears clean now. As it stands I cannot access the Router Configuration because the message "Network Not Available" appears. I have been in contact with my ISP, Belkin and have replaced the router with a new one all without success. I have looked into the WZCSVC and other services and when checking the dependencis the nessage "WMI:Critical Error" appears. All settings on the system are correct for setting up the router but it will not access the web. it seems the computer will not allow the router to "talk" to the web. Whatever caused the problem also appears to have deleted the system restore poits.

Its been a while since I came here, alas, I have not had any major problems on any of my machines due to all the great information I have obtained on this site. however, I just put together a brand new PC, probably my best and most powerful to date, and I do not want anything to screw it up. Here is my configuration. There is nothing on it right now, its brand new only has a few mp3's. Should I install Service Pack 2? I think its good, but I would like some expert advice. Lastly, should I install it through live update or through the Microsoft site, or as someone suggested, install the Network Installation pack for Developers and IT professionals.

Just got back from lunch to find a customer returned an Averatec notebook because his/her(?) wireless service would simply knock them offline in about five minutes every time they were online. Not familiar with wireless myself; control panel says the adapter is an 802.11g Mini PCI Wireless Network A.

My problem is : When I called Verizon yesterday, I was told that to connect the printer to the router, I do not need the print server. I was asked to locate the ethernet port at the back of my printer, plug the ethernet port cable and connect it to the Verizon router. Unfortunately, my printer does not have an ethernet port. I was told to call HP,and I did but did not get much help. What should I do to get my wireless printer work? I have a PC and a laptop. Prior to Verizon, I have a DSL and Vonage, both routers and print server did not have the same problem.

I took my daughters Gateway M320 laptop and did a restore from the CDs that came with the laptop. After doing all the Microsoft Updates, ALL the wireless driver installs from Gateway there is no 'Wireless Network Connection' icon. I have also checked Device Manager and there is no wireless adapter. Before this exercise she was running wireless fine. It does work 'hard wired' but no wireless icon.

We have two laptops and one wireless (HP Photosmart C7280) printer. Our laptops both connect to the internet wirelessly through a router. I was able to install and can print wirelessly from my laptop (a Mac) with no problems. However, we cannot figure out how to print wirelessly from my boyfriend's laptop (a Dell). We have installed the printer software and the printer itself on his laptop, and the laptop is able to identify the wireless printer over the network. We made sure that the printer is set to "online" and that file/printer sharing is turned on. But, whenever we go to print any kind of a file, we get an error message simply stating that the printer was unable to print and that we should run the troubleshooter. So, we run the troubleshooter, and we get this message:"The troubleshooter was not able to ping (detect a connection with) your print server. This might be the cause of the problem. Verify that your network is configured correctly and that you are connected to the network."
I am more used to working with Macs and my boyfriend is computer illiterate, so we're a bit lost as to what this means. I was able to set up a wireless network connection on his laptop, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do. Most of the other advice I've seen online involves a wireless printer that is wired to one computer, and another laptop trying to wirelessly access that printer through the connected computer...if that makes any sense. Our printer isn't wired to anything, and we just can't figure out why it'll print wirelessly on the Mac but not on the Dell laptop. Any ideas?

Does anyone happen to know how to successfully create a network in Windows XP Pro for a wireless laptop and for an Ethernet-hooked-up (non-wireless) computer. I'm trying to printer and file share the two together BUT I've exhausted myself in trying to make it happen. Has anyone successfully done this? Am I missing something? Perhaps hardware?I would truly appreciate any help or advice.

If i log onto my computer and just go into network connections, the computer is not able to look for wireless networks. if i hit the button to find networks, it gives me some strange error message. i have noticed though that i can fix the problem if i manually go into services and start the wireless zero configuration service myself. i configured this service to start automatically, and to keep restarting if attempts to start fail, but for whatever reason, the service does not start on its own when i boot the computer. once i start the service, i am able to connect without any problems.
The error message i get says something about finding more than one wirless device. i have a belkin usb wireless card, and before i installed the one i have now, i had another that coincidentally was the same size and also made by belkin. thinking that maybe some software was still on the computer, causing it to find both, and consequently not being able to connect to either, i uninstalled all the software for both routers and deleted all the related program files off of the computer. then i reinstalled and...got the same exact problem.

I have had Windows XP on my computer for 3 years, during that time I have had no problems with updates. A couple of days ago updates were running when I got the following message box. Service pack 3 setup. Access denied1! Microsoft will now un-install the current updates. At this point I was in a hurry to leave and shut off my computer thinking that when I started up again, the updates would resume their activity.......

1) I have seen this problem posted on another forum in the past, but the thread never led to a solution.2) This problem has occurred with both a EIDE hard drive and a USB camera. I have also seen reports of it happening with other drives.
(NOTE: the items I am referring to use native WIN XP drivers; I have posted this problem on other forums and the first responder always tells me to go to the manufactrer's site to download the latest drivers.)3) The problem: every time I reboot, the Hardware installation wizard reports the following: "The specified service does not exist as an installed service."4) Once this dialog box is closed, the yellow warning diamond appears nect to the device in hardware manager, and the driver "disk.sys" is NOT installed, although "partmgr.sys" is.

My granddaughter's computer has Windows XP, and the IE 6.0 shuts down constantly. I thought perhaps it had to do with the service pak updates -- although I see that she has computer set for automatic updates. After installing XP Service Pks, XP Professional, IE shuts down and does NOT ALLOW THE UPDATE to proceed. but sends an error report message notifying IE is shutting down. Why is IE shutting down?

Since the last 4-5 days my computer has been shutting down by itself. No warning nothing at all. Just Kaput.I mean windows doesn't show shut down message either. Also I feel it has something to do with my power settings( which are set down to never shut down/hibernate/standby), but I feel that if I leave it idle for some time.. that's when it goes.. if I keep working, it'll stay on.What's more, I think it started after an adobe flash player update( or maybe a windows update, both happened at the same time. Some kinda software distribution service 3.0).. System restore is not working either.I'm running Windows XP home on a compaq 2500 series laptop with P IV 2.4 Gigs processor, 512 mb RAM and 120 GB IDE HDD.
