I have dealt with this issue on a few machines now, but I am going to limit this post to just one of them. After removing viruses and/or other junk from this computer I have run into problems doing Windows or Microsoft Updates.
When I normally run into this I run Dial-a-Fix and the updates work. Not this time. I even went into the Services area and started any services that even remotely looked like they deal with windows updates. I still get the traditional windows update error page. (Error code 0x80072EFD)I have Googled, researched, and fretted over this, but cannot find any solution on my own.
I have just gone through the process of removing viruses from my computer, and then my XP theme goes away. I use XP Home Edition, and I am stuck with the Classic Theme with the lame white bars everywhere. Where do I go to reclaim my XP Theme?
While trying to delete some spyware off my computer I accidently deleted something and now the interenet doesn't work. There is a connection but somehow none of the internet applications work. I was using adaware and the add on LSP explorer. I deleted the Name space providers specifically the TCPIP and UDPIP.
I have a WD 250gb external HD, i have since switched to a mac and still want to use this HD.however there are 3 files on this drive that seem to be microsoft updates, not sure how they ended up on this drive....i did not place them there....id imagine it was thru one of the many microsoft auto updates i want to try and delete these files, but i get an error saying that i either dont have authority to delete these files , or they are currently in use. they are two folders that are 0 bytes....and have long random numeric and alpha titles such as e7e4e1d6bbb6349...etc.

"Install the ActiveX control required to view the website," but I don't get the bar saying to install it. None of the troubleshooting tips were relevant.
After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.
wen i turn on my laptop it keeps goin on 3 of 3 updates but does not install updates .then turns of an repeats all over again .an wont recignise cd/reboot factory instalationhelp
i have recently changed my hard drive. after having a few problems getting xp to work i got it sorted. but now when i turn on my pc i get a screen with the choice of two xp home operating systems. the first one does not work and i have to select the second one every time to make things work. how do i get rid of the first one.
I recently reformatted my machine and for some reason the first time i put in the recovery cd to reformat it installed windows instead of reformat. Then I put the cd in a second time and my computer was reformatted and installed windows a second time. So when i start up my computer it gives me a choice to start one of two operating systems of windows xp. Any ideas on how i can get rid one version without reformatting again. It is annoying having to choose one version every time. If you need more info or a better explanation just say so and i'll try my best.
I have a problem with 2 operating systems on my computer. I had to replace the hard drive and I could not find my xp disk so I installed 2000. I then found xp and installed it as a complete install not an upgrade. It is xp pro. Now when I start the computer it goes to a black screen asking which operating system I want to use XP or 2000. I want to get 2000 off and just run XP right from the start. Can I do it without reformatting and reinstalling XP?
How do I combine dual boot into 1 operation system. After downloading Windows XP Service Pack 2 my pc constantly rebooted. I deleted FAT files on partition trying to install and repair. There are now 2 windows xp home editions to choose. The one that allowed access to all my files and settings fails with hard drive configuration message. The other boots up with only the recycle bin visable. How do I fix the errored OS.
I was given a Compaq Presario Laptop that has both Windows 98 and Windows XP installed on the one hard drive (Partitioned into drive C and D) How do I get the windows 98 off? It won't let me reformat either drive (so I could just re-install.) XP is not listed in the progams, so I can't just uninstall it. It won't even boot from the CD drive (Although I've set it that way in set up.) I want just XP and would like it all redone. How do I do it?
I have a dual boot system, windows 2000 & winXP, I would like to get rid of windows 2000 and keep XP, both are on C drive, what is a easy way to do this.
We just bought some new computers which have XP Pro (downgraded from Vista Business). The first two I've looked at have the same XP key. That doesn't seem right. Is there any way a vendor can sell computers with the same product key?
I recently formated and restored windows to how it was when I bought it. Everything was ok except for updating using the Windows Update feature. I have it on, but when I go to the updating windows its not doing anything. Its suposte to scan, but its not scanning since it takes forever. On my other computer, it works in seconds.
My computer has automatic update on it but it hasent been updateing lately so i went to windows update and found all the new updates for my computer and clicked "install New Updates" and it went to the download screen and said "Error Download Failure"
I would like to know how to uninstall an update that was performed by Windows Update. The update itself was in the "Hardware, Optional" Type list (ie. not the"High Priority"or the"Software,Optional" list)The update that was installed shows up in the History log correctly I believe that Microsoft incorrectly scanned the computer and assigned a hardware update that pertained to a different type of hardware ... specifically, the update pertained to an "IBM Thinkpad UltraNav Pointing Device" whereas the actual hardware is a Toshiba Satellite with a Synaptics Touchpad".
I have run live update and installed all updates OK except .NET Framework SP1.1 update. This will not install and there is no reason given why - it just says installation failed
Windows Update keeps trying to update Office 2003.I have a trial version of Office 2003 that came with my computer.I do not want it at this time, but I may want it at some point in the future.I don't know if it can be hidden from the Windows update but if not, I am not sure how to fully get rid of it. It has never been "installed."Windows update fails every time, of course, because it isn't now nor has it ever been installed. The biggest problem is that it keeps trying to apply the same updates over and over and over. It slows down the shutdown as it repeats the attempt(s) 3 times before each shutdown and also it keeps downloading the same and or other Windows Updates for Office 2003
I am using a Dell, Windows XP Professional laptop computer. It has a non- wireless connection to the internet via my LAN.Last week, the yellow update "shield" icon appeared in my systray and I updated Windows - the update was completed. Since then, the update shield icon has appeared in my systray four times. I installed the update each time, but it seems to have been the same update each time ("KB 967715"). If it is the same update each time, which it seems to be, why would the update "shield" appear in my systray four times within a week and a half to install the same update
We have a network of computers running at work. 5 comps in total. All running XP Pro. They all connect to the network and internet through a net gear router. My net gear router has only 4 ports so i connected a netgear switch to one of the ports to extend it and allow another 2 connections. One of the computers would run a server application software, and the other computers would run the client application which would connect to the server thru the LAN. All was working fine, with no issues at all.
The problem: Recently we upgraded all of our computers to DELL. Optiplex 740's. Specs are nothing special:
OptiPlex 740MLK SF AMD X2 4800 (2.5Ghz 1MB 65W) E-Star : Energy E-Smart enable Memory : 1024MB (2x512MB) 667Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel NON-ECC Hard Drive : 160GB (7200Rpm) Serial ATAII 3Gb/s All running Windows XP PRO – Some have been updated fully, others no updates at all.
one of my client application stopped responding and was hanging.
I have been running Windows 7 RC beta on a new 1tb harddrive and installed XP Pro on a partition in the D:drive. When I rebooted all that I could get to reboot was the new install of XP Pro. Is there a way to select which system I can reboot from or toggle between them? Hope you can help? Thank you. I am running a Pentium 4, 2 gb ram, 1 tb harddrive.
I have a computer that has windows XP Home. I't has some driver issues etc that cannot be fixed mainly because i do not have the disk that was used to install it. I do on the other hand have a Win2K prof. disk that i would like to install on this comp so that it can be used again. I was wondering if someone might be able to either tell me or point me in the right direction of getting this machine re-installed with the win2k op sys. i.e tutorials etc. I also do not have the bios install disk so the bios will need to remain the way it is.
My hard drive is divided into two partitions running Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional NT. Windows 2000 is currently causing problems in that mouse movement is delayed, and also the shutdown process is lengthy, followed by a blank blue screen, sometimes not shutting down at all.As I would prefer to make a clean install of XP Pro it would be great to get rid of the former operating systems. Can anyone advise on how to go about this?
I bought a new dell dimension 4700 for my sister and two months later it crashed. Well she spent 6 hours on the phone with dell and all they did was a half assed restore which allowed her to keep her files but everything else barely worked. She brought it to me and I formatted the drive in xp setup and reinstalled xp pro. The computer runs great but when it boots up it asks me which operating sytem I want to run; the old xp home or the new xp pro. Then when you select the xp pro it boots up but that white line goes by real slow and it takes a minute or so to boot. Once it is booted it runs like a champ but how do I get rid of the old xp pro. I don't get it since I formatted the drive and removed the old partitions.
My friend recently bought a used laptop that has both Win 2000 & Win XP installed. How do I wipe the hard drive clean & install Win XP Pro? I tried to install XP Pro, thinking it would install over the other OS but it started installing it as a third OS!
I just finished up an install on an offline computer i have but for some reason it has it's previous OS which is 98 but on the largest of the HD's is XP Pro. how can i get rid of all the 98 files on the other HD's so there nothing of 98 left?
I have a small problem whihc i know is very easy to fix I have just forgotten how.I have a Win XP Pro system, but when it boots up 2 things happen. After getting to the point where it says reading DMI Data, it will say unable to read please hit alt control del to restart. When I do this I get a screen that asks me which Windows I wish to use. I select the bottom one and all seems ok.I want to not be getting to that screen, just let windows boot up.Am I to use msconfig or a other program to do this, it is getting annoying.
I'm going to wipe my drive and re-install the operating system, the only problem is I have two OS's and need to reinstall them both again . I've been told to install ME first and then install XP. I have a few questions I need a bit of help with. 1. Seen as I'm installing two operating systems is there anything I need to do extra to if I was just installing one. For instance which directory I install them both in etc. 2. Could someone either link me to a very simple and detailed guide on installing Windows XP Professional or else write out there own guide for me. Remember it needs to be easy to understand, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computers.
