I recently updated my pc from windows update, it was a update to SP2 from the sp1 I have, anyways when I did that and restarted the thing my whole desktop disapeared, so I restored mp pc back to what I had before but now it boots up really slow, it takes over 1 minute to get through the screen before "Log in" that says "windows is starting up", it used to take just a few seconds.
View 6 RepliesWhenever I open explorer (not IE) and attempt to delete files I get a box saying: Runtime Error! Program: C:WINDOWSexplorer.exe abnormal program termination (OK). If I click the explorer window the dialogue box disappears behind the explorer window and I can continue deleting files etc. However when I finally click the (OK) in the error box, All the Icons on my desktop disappear for about 15 seconds and then reappear as if nothing is wrong. But sometimes the icons do not reappear and then I have to use the Ctl-Alt-Del method to restart the computer. What is happening and how can I fix it without reinstalling windows XP SP2.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been having this problem which started a few days ago with my desktop. I will try to be as specific as I can with regards to the screwed up situation I'm in.I'm running on Windows XP with service pack 2 installed, anti-virus program I use is Norton corp. edition and I also have AdAware 7. I've dutifully updated all my virus definitions and all that.But I can no longer change my wallpaper and it's only a plain blue screen. Funny thing is, when I go into display and select the pic I want to use, it actually shows up in the display area, but nothing happens when I click the apply button, and the background remains plain blue. However, if I click on the default windows XP theme, it changes to that theme, and if I then click back on the photo I want to use, it shows up!!! But a few minutes later, the screen flickers and all is back to plain blue screen again. But when I turn the computer off, a brief flicker of the picture I want to use flashes before shutting down, just what exactly is happening to my machine?
Nothing like this has ever happened to me before!! Also, it seems as if some settings that I've tried to change (for ex, selecting windows media player as the default player for all types of media files) do not stay that way for long. What I mean is, the changes take place right after I've selected them, but a few minutes later, they change back to the way they were which is really frustrating, not to mention creepy as hell as well.I've practically looked thru all that the web has to offer on this issue and has now officially become desperate and despondent. however, after running regedit and following the paths, I can't find the chunk after "Policies" and all I have after that path is an "explorer" folder, no mentioning of wallpaper strings whatsoever.I've also ran norton many times and have the latest updates and etc, I've also ran ad aware and nothing suspicious have to found which might indicate the culprit behind my problem, just a few cookies and trackers.therefore,
My computer was working fine. I would turn on the computer and it'll go straight into my desktop and I'll see all my files and icons on the desktop. Just 2 days ago, my son decides to "create" his own user account and he happens to set it him up also as the "administrator". When ever we turn on the computer, it would go to a screen and it would ask us to select a user to log on as (only one avail, it's his). We'd click his user account and it goes to a desktop, however, there is only 2 icons (recycle bin and adobe reader), nothing else. Where are my files/icons? How do I fix it? I rather undo what he did but it appears that I can't delete his user account because he is the administrator.

They are reported as being 0 kb in size and are grayed out. When I choose to hide system files in Explorer's view settings they disappear. I cannot delete them at all. I have tried deleting them via safe mode, with a program called movonboot and many other ways.as to how to get rid of these annoying files without reformatting?

All programs still operate correctly. I can open the task manager and run programs from it, but all the icons and the start bar are gone. I am not able to open any display controls, nor can I right click and get any options. I am not even able to pull up the control panel.

I can go to Programs Accessories/Remote Desktop Conn/ and click on it, but nothing happens. I can also go to MyComputer/Windows/System32/mstsc.exe and click on that, and again, nothing happens. No dialog box appears. It worked fine just yesterday, but seems to be dead today. And I couldn't find a download on the MS windows site.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system is set up with three harddrives and multiple partitions on each drive.I know that if I just delete a file, it's stored in the Recycle Bin and not actually deleted, even if I empty the bin.However, since the Recycle Bin is on the C: drive, if I delete a file from another drive's partition, and then I use Eraser on the Recycle Bin to overwrite the files inside, are the files still on the partition and the empty space on it now has to also be Erased?

Please re-install a copy of the file.His computer is a IBM with windows 2000 loaded.I beleave there are 2 copies of windows 2000 on his computer because when he tries to bootup it gives him a choice of either copies.Ive tried the windows 2000 CD to boot in the cd-rom drive but either its not reading or maybe its because the disk is a copy and not original.

At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

I don't think my Virus Scan is working right and I have eTrust EZ Armor 2005 which is one that Microsoft recommends. My floppy drive isn't working either. I get a error message that says my driver is corrupt Error 39. My memory got full. I have 10 GB memory and I only have 4.17 left now. I have 512 Ram in my computer, but I don't know how much is left and don't know how to find out. Since I upgraded I can no longer shut my computer down from my desk top. I go to Start and click turn off my computer, then I go to shut down. I seems to go through the motions, but a screen comes up and says it is safe to shut my computer down, well it won't shut down with the button on thefront, so I have to push the button on the back of my computer.

When I try to merge the file I get this error " Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" How do I go around this? When I restarted it, Windows XP had a blue screen on which I never saw before that said it would go through 3 stages to fix any errors that shutting down my computer may have caused. After Windows automatically restarted, what comes on my screen with all the desktop icons is now messed up-- as programs automatically try to open, I get a box like this:

When ever i click on minimise the screen i wish to do so shrinks in the normal way but appears to disappear behind the task bar. So in my task bar i have nothing. But when i activate task manager its still running.

Anyway, I right-clicked and opened with VLC, and I have no idea how many different VLCs opened. The screen went black and suddenly my desktop is set to 4 bit color and 640x480 resolution. I can change the resolution, but every time I try and change the color, the screen goes black for a good 30 seconds, and when it comes back, it says "your settings have been changed do you wish to keep the bla bla bla" - but it's still at 4 colors. And while it's at it, it switches the resolution back to 640x480. I'm not sure what you need to know for this... I have WinXP and my video card is an Intel 82810E.

Then i tried to reboot but my password wasnt working, so i went into bios, and not knowing what i did i went to change startup pass and changed it... now when i reboot it says use a startup pass, but it wont even let me type it in....and i dont know how to start windows xp cd at reboot cuz for some reason it doesnt go through even when i enter the BIOS....can someone please help me? my pc is messed up.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a big problem, I was trying to change the icons for my file types in explorer specificaly under tools/folder options/file types. Well I changed the icons for the AudioCD,DVD,Drive,File Folder and Folder there was no bad results from the audio and dvd nor the others, it just didnt change my icons to what i wanted it to be so whatever i moved on. Well after i did those things i started to notice that when im using explorer every time i open a folder it would open in a different window so im like maybe i forgot to put a check in the open in the same window in the folder options. So I checked and to my suprise it was checked. I started to search the web for answers and I found a forum and saw that the problem could be in my registry specificaly in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT so I deleted the Folder,Directory and Drive registry folders in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT now I cant access my C drive and my folders fortunatly i can use my browser and other apps i just cant access my drive and documents .
