Uninstall All Java Updates And Have Just One Latest?
Jan 12, 2009
Do I really need Java updates 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 installed on my computer? Is it not sufficient to have just the latest one and I can uninstall the rest? Also, if I already have SP3 for XP installed, can I uninstall all those "NET framework for SP 2" that are installed on my computer?

I come across very strange problem. Last week my machine running XP Home was infected by 'Boot.Mebroot' virus which curropted my boot configurations and my machine was getting restarted upon loading windows. I tried all the options but no use. Then I re-install (Upgraded to) XP Professional with complete installation without reformat and updated to latest SP3. It went fine, I ran Symantec and found the bugger and kicked off from my machine. Then I started Windows Live update as I want to bring my PC to latest patches. All the updates got installed without an error (about 58 updates most of them were security update, SP3 and IE8). As soon as I restart my machine it shows the same behaivour. It get restarted. I Repaired my XP professional three time now.
Why I am accusing MS XP Update for all this because Last night everything was running absolutly perfect, I started the update it showed me 58 updates. All update gone successfully. After finishing the the updates I simply restarted my machine and it failed again and restarting again and again. It shows me F8 boot options and I tried all but same. So I repaired this morning again. I tried the 'fixmbr' command in recovery console and it displays the dangerous message that 'This machine boot have some problem' but if you ruin FIXMBR you might loose the partition and stuff so I didn't run it as I have very important data on my disk.

I recently downloaded and installed the latest security updates for Win XP. The computer runs fine, but when
it is time to shut it down it takes an extremely long time to complete the shut down. I defragmented the hard
drive thinking that would solve the problem but it had no noticeable affect

I need to uninstall an old java version which is not working correctly. I have jre 1.3.1_13 in the Add/Remove programs with 0.95MB (I think the normal version should have >15MB) however that is the only version that is recognized. All programs try to use that version and so none of them work. For example, a shortcut to a java program does not have the "Open" option when I right click the icon (the same shortcut has that option on the other computer where java works correctly). Also, on the java website, this shows that I have that version. The problem is, I also have installed version 5.0 update 6, but I can not uninstall the old version, because something is corrupted and the uninstall process freezes before it is removed.I have tried deleting all registry keys and values belonging to the old version and it still does not recognize version 5.0 and so I can not launch any java programs from my computer. If I download the 1.3.1 setup to try and re install, the setup process also freezes. However, I can install most programs with no problems, and I can uninstall all programs except java, from the Add/Remove panel without problems too. How can I completely uninstall this version? Or, even better, how can I uninstall ALL java versions to start from scratch with a clean install of one version only? Where can I see all the registry keys and values belonging to each java version? Or maybe there is an easier way to fix this.

I can't uninstall my Java runtime 1.5.0.06 from the add/remove in the Control Panel, the Java Control Panel has this error:"The system cannot find the registry key specified:The registry still shows the old 1.4.2.06 and that seems to be the conflict for being unable to complete the uninstall process.

I don't know where to put this topic. But alright so basically yesterday I started having this problem. When I go to anything that uses Java such as Geocities my computer starts making a chugging noise and the browser (IE or Firefox) crashes. It brings up one of those senseless error messages about something failing. I'd look now but it'd close this screen. I tried uninstalling Java but when I try uninstalling the JS2E Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 5 it won't let me uninstall either. It makes the same noise and freezes up the window. What in the hell do I do? I've never had a problem quite like this.

The C drive on my WinXP Pro SP3 desktop has < 14% free space. I'm building a new system and am using the current desktop as my production system. Since this small % of free space occasionally causes WinXP Pro to complain, I'm analyzing which applications that are disk space hogs can be uninstalled. One likely candidate is Java, which consumes ~ 1 GB of disk space in the form of several updates. Are all Java Updates needed or just the most recent ones?

Am attempting to delete three old zip/unzip driver folders so I can install updated versions of the drivers, but every time I go to delete, a warning pops-up stating ...."nothing to do"......, then it slowly (crawls, actually) begins, stating..... "deleting from archive". The files are full, so there's obvious data that needs to be removed despite the warning that there's nothing to do. At the speed this thing is deleting, if at all, it will take days. My question is, why can't I do a conventional uninstall/deletion the way most files are deleted, and why is it requiring so much time? (FYI, once this process starts, the only way to stop it is to do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE- just canceling doesn't do a thing), I have to remove thes drivers before installing the new versions. Is there another method of removing these files

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads [...] layLang=en My XP machine is on Dell SP2, with all updates, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be detecting SP3 to download. I did some googling and the closest thing I got to a manual SP3 from Microsoft is an ISO image. Now, I wanted the latest version of the ISO, so I can burn it once and pack it away in my software collection. How do I verify if any updates where made after this? If any, where can I find them in an ISO format? (or even in a AIO download file. One file for the latest SP3.) Anyone have any idea what this is? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads [...] laylang=en

I am having an email conversation with Microsoft about some Windows Update issues. This is a very drawn out process as they take about three days between responses. Their last suggestion was for me to reinstall SP3. I asked them if I should remove my current version first. They haven't responded yet so I though I would throw it out here. Should I remove the current version or will it just be overwritten if i re-run the installation with their latest version?

I had to reinstall an .inf file and it called for files on my XP CD. The problem is that the XP CD is the original RTM version and my system has been updated to SP1 and SP2. The installation program wanted to install older versions of the files from the CD over the existing versions. I found some but not all the files I needed for the installation in the folder "Service Pack Files."Is there some way to create a CD that contains all the current system files that I need to repair XP SP2. Sort of a current snapshot. It would not have to be an installation disk, just a repair disk.It would be nice to be able to get a installation disk that is current without having to pay for a new full version of XP. After all these years my system is so garbaged up that dumping it and starting over is appealing. I do not want to start with my RTM and then run all the upgrades, it would take forever. Microsoft must realize that there are a lot of people with
the same problem. Perhaps someone could convince them to come up with a cleanup tool.

My sister tells me that after receiving a Windows update about a week ago, Zone Alarm stopped allowing access to the Internet. She uninstalled it and went to ZA website. They told her to download a new version that would compensate for the Windows update. She did, but it slowed her computer quite a bit. She also says that it interrupts Outlook Express from time to time.

I posted the same question on MS newsgroup but since nobody replies to it and there are about 8 people with the same problem, I thought that I look somewhere else for answer. I'm in the middle of formatting a hard drive, doing the research while waiting. good thing I have another computer to use. I installed the latest MS Windows Update this afternoon (about 10 hours ago) and it renders my computer unusable. the computer won't boot, it just got stuck on the Windows XP screen where the blue bars go from left to right. after about 2-3 runs, it started to get very slow and the little blocks that make up the bars shows up very slowly like in slow motion. I don't (can't) remember the exact KB number, but I remember installing about 7-8 updates. the critical (required) ones are the malicious software removal thing, a patch for IE6, outlook express patch, ms word patch. then I add the root something update and an update for my network card. hen it told me to reboot the computer but the computer will not boot. I tried another hard drive that I haven't used since March, it performs the same "problem", the bars go for about 2-3 runs then it started to get very slow. then it just sits there, stuck, until I press the reset button. I'm currently formatting this hard drive and leaving the updated one untouched because I don't want to have to format that one. too much data and too many programs to reinstall (I want clean install and clean registry).

The tweak is simple.Beside the QoS and others around the Internet for the new XP Operating System,I found out that native drivers sometimes slow you down.So if you have applied all tweaks and you are still having slow downs try reinstalling your NICs drivers.I have reinstalled my NIC drivers with the latest found on their website, and now I can really appreciate all my available bandwidth. The difference is noticeable. My web pages now load almost instantly where they used to take even a minute. As allways, this tweak worked well for me, but may not work with everybody, just try.You can go back to native drivers anytime.

I m trying to install Service pack 2 onto my home PC. I used to have SP2 on my computer and it worked and installed perfectly but months ago I had to format and put on SP1. I have now decided that I want SP2 back on and having tried around 6 times with 2 different discs and with no avail. I am having the same problem every time; it will not finish the installation and will hang on the boot screen. It will install all the components but on boot it will hang and not finish. It has installed before on this same PC with no problems but not these times. I have tried an upgrade, a clean install; install driver and computer updates then trying both ways again. I have tried a quick and even a long format process but with the same problem every time. Could it be the hardware? I have made 3 changes since the last time of having SP2 on my PC and they are as follows:
-GeForce 5500 has now changed to GeForce 6600
-Added more RAM 256mb to 1GB
-Added a fan
I m not sure where to go from this, stuck with SP1 and unable to install the latest software I need for my college work.

Described on MS Update web site as follows: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 Download size: 22.4 MB , 3 minutes The .NET Framework version 2.0 improves scalability and performance with improved caching, application deployment and updating with ClickOnce, and support for the broadest array of browsers and devices with ASP.NET 2.0 controls and services. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer. Also, can anyone explain in English what this is suppose to do and if could cause any potential problems based on info provided below? (More system info in bio if needed) My computer and DSL connection speeds are so fast I cannot imagine I have a need for ''improved performance'' but I like to keep everything up to date. I just want to make sure this download won't interfere with with current McAfee services, music downlading from Napster, Rhapsody or whatever, or AOL or SBC/Yahoo DSL connections. This computer is not used for video gaming. Computer has plenty of free hard drive space. Intel P4 630 3.0 GHz; IE 6.0; AOL 9.0SE - I can currently be signed onto both Yahoo and AOL simultaneously.

Computer (sony-vaio desktop, turning 4 yrs old next month): Windows XP Home SP 2, IE7 and latest version of Firefox, Norton AntiVirus 2003 (I mention my AV software in case any of your solutions may conflict with it).My index.dat file under Content IE5 (which in turn is in the Temporary Internet Files folder) is bloated. I believe there are several Internet Explorer dat.files around besides the one mentioned. I ran ATF Cleaner, but it does not clean index.dat files. I was told NOT to run ccleaner, as it is said to be aggressive and can destroy computers. I do NOT want to do anything with the registry by the way, only clean out the index.dat files.
Since the index.dat files are protected by the systems, I can't get at them manually. I don't even know where the remaining index.dat files (ONLY for Internet Explorer) are located.

My machine has suddenly started giving me an error on start-up. The little red shield appears in the system tray and a warning saying that my Norton Anti-virus software is not working and I am not protected.
