Where does Win Xp store the System Restore files? I'd like to save some disc space by not keeping every restore point. As it is, I have a couple of restore points that I created when I knew things where stable and that's really all I want.
View 6 RepliesI formatted my pc the other day cause i had so much rubbish on it that i thought it would be easier to do so. I normally play yahoo pool so i need java sun for it too work or microsoft virtual machine, I prefer using virtual machine cause it loads easier and doesnt seem to crash. i cant install virtual machine onto my pc cause it says i have the wrong operating system for that version. java sun 5.0 is installed on my pc but not properly and wont load so i went to unistall it and get this message "error transforms, verify that the specified transform path is valid" I'm not sure what to do, I was gonna do a system restore but i cannot even find that on my pc.

View 5 Replies View Relatedrecently i did a system restore to fix some problems that came up after my siblings used my computer. before the system restore i could play avi files no problem, but afterwards the media player can only play the sound.ive tried several movie players such as divx, windows media player, klite movie player, and vlc. all of them can play the audio but not video.i updated my divx codec and downloaded a new fddshow codec but it didnt work. k-lite codec pack comes with a whole lot of video codecs to play any movie format, but it still doesnt work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I've been trying to install XP SP2 on a system that was recovered using an XP upgrade disc that only had SP1. The setup program gets through backing up, creating a restore point and so on, but during the actual file installation process, an error causes setup to abort and undo all changes made (rollback). "Service Pack 2 Setup Error." is the title bar, and "The system cannot find the path specified." is the message, the only option is to click ok, which opens the XP SP2 uninstall wizard. I've tried using Subinacl to reset security settings, tried installing in both safe and normal modes, used chkdsk /r and /p and tried installing again, and each time got the same message.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell M1710 XPS laptop, recently because of a power cut it failed to boot because of a corrupt file. I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I'm trying to add a path value to my existing path statement for XP (via control panenel->system, advanced tab, environment) but it is truncated. If the size limit is 1023 chars, then I'm well under this.I change the PATH variable via:Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab;

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy 2nd drive isn't allowing me to delete any files from it. when i try i get an error that reads "error deleting file cannot find specified path". this started occurring when the wires on the drive came loose causing the drive to intermittently lose power. i fixed that and now i'm screwed.what i've done: i tried deleting from safe mode and that didn't work. i checked all the wires on my drives and they are fine now. i got a program called "moveonboot" that deleted a few files, but i want to fix the problem, not find a way around it.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?

View 13 Replies View RelatedMy dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have folders on a USB stick, which I ahve tried deleting in the past. Now inside each folder is one file titled U¬U¬SWIN.4.1 - 0KB each. When i click on delete an error message appears saying: "Cannot delete U¬U¬SWIN.4: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name." I can still add files to the USB, but I it looks like it's full with folders and looks messy. It's just really annoying.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.

We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.

My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having some issues with one of my PC's. After about a minute at desktop, it would completely lock up. Using msconfig, I was able to isolate (at least) one of the things causing it: a service called 'Windows Management Instrumentation'. Keeping it, and it's co-responding service, unchecked in msconfig, stops the freeze, and allows my computer ot seemingly work as if all is well. However, I'm skeptical that is the case.
Also, another problem occurred yesterday....all of a sudden my admin account no longer displayed on the login screen. I had taken my PC to a repair shop last week, and the guy created a new account...this account has administrator priveledges, just as the old one does. However, it is missing a lot of files and documents that were from my old account. When booting in safe mode, both accounts still display. Why is this?
Another question, does anyone know what the service CaReTaKeR-CT NetMgr is/does? It looks a bit seedy, so I've currently disabled it.
My 'restore' has completely disappeared. I followed the advice given on in one of your forums, going to start/run/inf and then right clicking sr.inf and then install. I received a pop-up box asking for the file path (a path is already given, but it must not be correct) as well as a message stating I need to insert my xp service pack two cd and that I should then reboot. I did this, but I still receive the same pop-up and message. I don't know what path to type and obviously, when I rebooted, I didn't install anything. I tried to figure out how to extract just what I needed from the cd but I admit it, I'm a deer in the headlights.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have got 3 partitions on my HDD namely C, D and E drive.C is the windows drive , the other two are normal data storage drives. Yesterday when i started the PC, i found that all the folders on my E drive have become empty and the files which i can see do not work. Everything on the partition has become useless.Even though all folders show 0 files, the used disk space is same as before.Is it some kind of virus?
One more thing, i tried to system restore. When i reached the system restore screen, i found out that all my restore points are gone and i cant restore my PC to any earlier date, even though i have assigned nearly 20% of each disk for creating restore points. Even the calendar in system restore screen wont show a previous month except the current month.
I am trying to do a system restore and my system runs it all but when all is done I get a message saying that no changes have been made to my system and that the system restore was unsuccessful. The reason I am trying to restore my system is because Photoshop is suddenly unable to save as a jpeg? It doesn't recognise the jpeg format when saving and saves as a Photoshop document. THen it wont recognise the file to open it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. Funnily enough photoshop elements has no problem with it.
