Unable To Convert FAT 32 To NTFS / Volume Used By Other Process?
Feb 22, 2005
I want to convert my Compaq Presario 17XL265 laptop from Fat32 to NTFS. I have just upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Home Edition. When I enter the command to make the conversion (Convert C: /FS:NTFS) I get this message:"Convert can not run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid."

Yesterday I upgraded my old computer to Xp, but I did so on only one partition, and I left It at FAT 32 just to see if it would work. Now Iam going to convert to NTFS because everything went fine and now I just want to free up space and reformatt the hard drive, basically getting rid of all the information on it and starting fresh. I just want to know if I can reformatt, and the steps for doing so if I can.I only have one partition on this computer that is why I am concerned about the reformatting thing. I tried to formatt when it was still FAT32 but it was saying that i needed to close all remaining things that were using this system.? I am going to convert to NTFS reguardless I just want to free up all my disk space that is being stolen from the old 98 system files.

Convert from fat32 to ntfs:From the command line: CONVERT C: /FS:NTFSHowever, the best way in my opinion is a 3rd party product such as Partition Magic (version 7.0 or later). Lets you do everything from within the GUI and it's a delight to work with. Without Partition Magic, this is a one-way process (you cannot convert back to FAT without a reformat)

I already converted my HD from FAT32 to NFTS. I ran the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:" and it shows my cluster size of 4096 KB. BootIT NG also confirms the 4KB cluster size.So..Is that all I needed to do? Is there an advantage of formatting a HD directly as NTFS? Is the convert command (with the 4KB cluster size) enough or will a re-format give better security, performance etc.

I have a GM SATA 160GB External Hard Drive that is USB compatible.During a recent file transfer, a suspected Virus infection caused all folders to executable files which even could not be viewed. Failing in several attempts to recover any of the affected files, I resorted to various formatting procedures including Low-level formatting. RAW file format resulted and now I need an NTFS file format to be able to use the drive!

At an office where I work, the XP installation has been upgraded, but the file system is FAT32.I tried to install a photo card reader, and the system crashed. What are the dangers, in converting to NTFS using the convert.exe command, in losing data already installed? I don't want to be blamed for the wiping out of any of the current set up, but I only know NTFS, and have never used FAT32 with XP.

I have a game that I play sometimes. I downloaded it from a very reliable site as I have 3 or 4 other games from the same site that have always worked fine. On this particular game, every once and a while it will freeze up on me and the only way to get out is to manually turn off my pc and then turn it back on again. When I turn it back on my pc does some kind of a scan and tells me that the NTFS volume is dirty. I have never seen this term used before. I am running a Dell with Windows XP sp2. What is a NTFS volume? What does this mean and what do I need to do? I have Avast antivirus and Armor 2 Net firewall and 2 different antispyware programs running.

I've acquired an older Dell computer with the FAT 32 file system. I want to convert it to NTFS. I've found many articles with directions on how to do this but I'm having a real problem. After I go to Command Prompt and enter "convert c: /fs:ntfs, and hit enter, it tells me to enter the "volume label for the drive".I've tried many different combo's but always get the notice that I have "entered an incorrect volume label".

Ive recently purchased a used 80gb external portable HD for use with my new USB car stereo head unit. The manufacturers state that the H/U will only recognize the FAT32 file system. Hence I went about formatting (it came formatted) the drive as it came with the NTFS system. When I prepare to format the drive via disk management, it only gives me the option of an NTFS format and no FAT32.

I really don't know how to start this so I will give you some of the symptoms
1. When I run Panda online scan it hangs on file 319 and will not go any further
2. When I run Spybot at the end I get "Error during check! Xuron55 (Datei C:Windowswin.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
3. When I search for a file in Regedit it searches forever
4. In one of my log files (C:WindowsSystem32WBEMLogs) it says "Shell name Explorer.exe in registry not found in process list Unable to locate Shell process. Impersonation failed.
5. In my event viewer I am getting alot of "The Shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restartedI am running XP Home Edition and this has been going on for a couple of weeks. I run Panda Online Scan, Adaware, and Spybot weekly and because I have had a couple of viruses in the past I run Stinger pretty often also.

I have inherited an image (for one of our products) that I can't get the "Runas" process to work.XP, SP3, latest / greatest patches;I have confirmed that I have the Secondary Logon service running; This is what my "run as" is trying to do: We sell kiosk-like systems for hospitals. We ship our systems to boot to a logon screen so our field employees can configure the system and network settings. Once they log out and log back in with the "Customer" account, I want to fire off a startup script that writes sets the registry to auto-logon with that customer account & password. So I wrote three scripts - one that launches my little "Runas" script, the "Runas" script it self, and a final one to clean up the initial "launch" script from the "startup" folder. The script will launch and call my "Runas" Script - and I *know* that the reg import bit works fine if I do it manually, but it hangs up with a "unable to locate runas process".

Last access time stampsXP automatically updates the date and time stamp with information about the last time you accessed a file. Not only does it mark the file, but it also updates the directory the file is located in as well as any directories above it. If you have a large hard drive with many subdirectories on it, this updating can slow down your system. To disable the updating, start the Registry Editor by selecting Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the Open text box, and clicking OK.
When the Registry Editor window opens, navigate through the left pane until you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControl SetControlFilesystemIn the right pane, look for the value named NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate. If the value exists, it's probably set to 0. To change the value, double-click it. You'll then see the Edit DWORD Value screen. Enter 1 in the Value Data field and click OK.If the value doesn't exist, you'll need to add it. Select New | DWORD Value from the Edit menu.

I have a volume control icon at my system tray...then, all of the sudden, the icon shows a "mute" status...i tried to unmute it by double-clicking the icon to access the volume control...nothing happened...i went to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices...also, nothing happened...i thought that this applet (mmsys.cpl) in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 was corrupted, so i tried to run it from other folder containing that file but still, nothing happened...at this point, i don't think that all 3 files were corrupted...the only way to control the volume , and to mute/unmute is by using the Creative Surround Mixer (i have an Audigy sound card),which work flawlessly...The wierd part is, even i unmute from here, the volume icon at the system tray still shown as 'mute'..but i can still hear all the sounds and songs...Then, I've discovered that in AudioHQ (also from Creative software), under the View>Multimedia Propertis, I CAN actually access the 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet...this will open the 'Audio' tab...other tabs like 'Sound', 'Voice' and 'Hardware' is also accessible from here, BUT, when opening the 'Volume' tab, it hangs...i could't access this applet any longer...the only way to close it is to end the process (rundll32.exe) in the task manager. That's why i conclude that the volume tab in the applet is problematic.
