I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. I have a laptop with Avast on it which has updated perfectly. I have forced validation from DOS but this still doesn't let the updates go ahead

It launches everytime I start the computer and several times throughout the day. At startup the computer will not get to the home screen without making a selection of whether to correct now or later. It offers me the opportunity to "purchase validation." Everything on my computer is legitemate. I've looked in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) startup and services and don't recognize it. I have a HP Pavilion a647c, w/Windows XP. This is the site that it directs me too:If you scroll to the 3rd section of the webpage you will see the "star" that I refrenced earlier. Bottom line is I don't know if this is for real.

After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

When I enter the command to make the conversion (Convert C: /FS:NTFS) I get this message:"Convert can not run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid."
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a volume control icon at my system tray...then, all of the sudden, the icon shows a "mute" status...i tried to unmute it by double-clicking the icon to access the volume control...nothing happened...i went to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices...also, nothing happened...i thought that this applet (mmsys.cpl) in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 was corrupted, so i tried to run it from other folder containing that file but still, nothing happened...at this point, i don't think that all 3 files were corrupted...the only way to control the volume , and to mute/unmute is by using the Creative Surround Mixer (i have an Audigy sound card),which work flawlessly...The wierd part is, even i unmute from here, the volume icon at the system tray still shown as 'mute'..but i can still hear all the sounds and songs...Then, I've discovered that in AudioHQ (also from Creative software), under the View>Multimedia Propertis, I CAN actually access the 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet...this will open the 'Audio' tab...other tabs like 'Sound', 'Voice' and 'Hardware' is also accessible from here, BUT, when opening the 'Volume' tab, it hangs...i could't access this applet any longer...the only way to close it is to end the process (rundll32.exe) in the task manager.That's why i conclude that the volume tab in the applet is problematic.

The idea is to stop the obnoxious MS startup tune when booting up in a place where I don't want attention; i.e. on a plane, in a meeting, classroom, etc. As a techie I'm way too lazy and forgetful to mute the sound before logging off everytime and would much rather write a complicated script to do this. . why don't laptop makers install the old toggle volume switches?? click=on, off.. it would be such a simple solution to this..
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.
I have put another copy of XP onto my D: drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C: drive which is a lot of bother. I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.
Computer has a bad virus and am planning on wiping the drive and re-installing windows. Problem is that I cannot find my key code to validate windows. Is it somewhere on my computer?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

It is only anything having to do with and url dealing with windows update. When I get the screen, "unable to connect" and select to have I.E. run diagnostics, it doesn't come up with anything. I've run serveral virus/malware scans and nothing comes up. I have XP, a legal copy, but it does not have the diagnostics software. View 7 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was browsing the internet (wink), and randomly my desktop background changed to an image of a fake virus alert. Also, many security-related sites were blocked, and clicking on any google results redirected me to various advertising sites. Only a couple weeks prior I had this same virus, which I believe to be Smitfraud, and resolved it by running the MalwareBytes program. When I tried to do this this time, however, the program froze immediately upon starting the scan.An additional symptom I had was when I would start up Windows, If I started up in safe mode I would get the same problem, only the problematic file would be services.exe. Also I had no taskbar in safe mode. The only attempt at fixing this I really made was downloading and running SmitFraudFix.exe, but all that seemed to do was delete my Firefox bookmarks which I promptly restored.
At any rate, I could not solve this problem, so I repaired(not reinstalled) windows. Upon completing repair I ran a windows update like any sane person would, but it was unable to connect. I downloaded the manual SP3 installer and ran it, but got an access denied error. I ran AdAware & MalwareBytes successfully(both were still fully updated definitions) and they removed stuff, and I was able to connect to Windows Update, but after attempting to download the WindowsUpdate file(not the actual windows updates, but the updated WindowsUpdate if you catch my drift) I got an "Access is Denied" error, with error code 0x80070005. I repaired windows again, but the same exact pattern happened.
