Hi i am unable to install update KB979683. I am getting a response of failed time after time.Is anybody able to help me please?I have had no other issues when installing updates previously.
View 13 RepliesI have recently done a clean Windows XP Install followed by installing Service Pack 1 then 3.Everything was running smoothly and I was able to log into the desktop.However when I tried to check for updates via Windows update, in Internet explorer however it always says the 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage'After diagnosing the issue, it found no problems.I can browse any other website but sometimes when I click on an item through doing a google search, it sometimes sends me to a random search engine page!!
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

I have windows XP SP2. When I try to do windows update, it gave a message that says "files required for windows update were not installed or registered." Then it give you the box to click to install it. And after installing it, it still bring up the same message. I tried several times but no luck. Why is this happening?

This time I did a custom install and only one update was available to install, i.e. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 [KB982168] so I did the install and was informed that the installation was sucessfull. However, the notification that this update was available appeared again. I went directly to the MS update site and again was informed that this update should be installed. Again,I successfully installed it, restarted the computer, only to get the update notification again. For some reason this update will not install even though it says that it does. I looked at my Add & Remove list of programs and found.

View 4 Replies View RelatedFirst off, I would like to note that I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 1 and it's a HP Desktop AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700+ Windows Update keeps showing me a message saying "This version of Windows XP is no longer secure. Please download Service Pack 2." So, I download Service Pack 2 and then I start the install and it backs up the files and stuff and when it's almost done, a message pops up and says "Access Denied". And then it says "Please undo all changes that has been made". I have tried it 2 or 3 times and it keeps doing the same thing.

On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. View 1 Replies View RelatedI now think a problem, that may have been a bug, could now be a winsock problem. What is happening, is I cannot connect to windows update. It is only anything having to do with and url dealing with windows update. When I get the screen, "unable to connect" and select to have I.E. run diagnostics, it doesn't come up with anything. I've run serveral virus/malware scans and nothing comes up. I have XP, a legal copy, but it does not have the diagnostics software. I have downloaded some sort of winsock "fix" software, but do not want to run this, in fear of totally messing something up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was browsing the internet (wink), and randomly my desktop background changed to an image of a fake virus alert. Also, many security-related sites were blocked, and clicking on any google results redirected me to various advertising sites. Only a couple weeks prior I had this same virus, which I believe to be Smitfraud, and resolved it by running the MalwareBytes program. When I tried to do this this time, however, the program froze immediately upon starting the scan.An additional symptom I had was when I would start up Windows, If I started up in safe mode I would get the same problem, only the problematic file would be services.exe. Also I had no taskbar in safe mode. The only attempt at fixing this I really made was downloading and running SmitFraudFix.exe, but all that seemed to do was delete my Firefox bookmarks which I promptly restored.
At any rate, I could not solve this problem, so I repaired(not reinstalled) windows. Upon completing repair I ran a windows update like any sane person would, but it was unable to connect. I downloaded the manual SP3 installer and ran it, but got an access denied error. I ran AdAware & MalwareBytes successfully(both were still fully updated definitions) and they removed stuff, and I was able to connect to Windows Update, but after attempting to download the WindowsUpdate file(not the actual windows updates, but the updated WindowsUpdate if you catch my drift) I got an "Access is Denied" error, with error code 0x80070005. I repaired windows again, but the same exact pattern happened.
I want windows to automatically download the updates for me. For some
reason, the Windows update was corrupted so I had to go to
C:windowsDownload Program Files to update the damage files.
Right now, Windows downloads the files and lets me decide when to
install them. I want Windows to download and install automatically.
I have a problem that I can't figure out. When I go to windows update on the start menu I get sent to www.msn.com.Also when I click on Microsoft update it just grinds and grinds.Also when I go to the windows updates web page and try to download something manually it validates my machine and presents a clickable download button. View 14 Replies View Relatedrecently i downloaded 1 windows xp update through Automatic update ( i dont remeber what was it) After it completed its download...and when i tried to shutdown my PC, the box which comes showing the 3 buttons (Standby,Turn off,Restart), under it was written that "Turnoff the computer after installing the updates"...as it was normally displayed after installing the updates...The Problem is that after logging off (during shutdown process..) ,the screen which shows these messages "Installing Updates 1 of 1..." and "Do not Turn off or Unplug the PC..It will Turnoff Automatically..."..These messages keep on coming for a long time...i left my PC for 1 complete day..but still this update is not installing neither it is turning off my computer..Again if iam forcefully restarting my PC ..then the next time when i want to turnoff the same cycle happen

4) AdAware SE Personel

8) HiJackThis
9) Reboot
10) housecall.trendmicro.com (new Beta version)
11) Reboot
12) Empty %temp%
13) Re-enable System Recover
I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.
I can't run windows update, things won't install, or they won't run, update doesn't work, my windows problem cup runneth over. Here is my Hijack This! log. I will be eternally grateful if someone can help, and I don't have to wipe my HD!

i am presently trying to help a friend get his system running efficiently. His windows update icon is permanently displayed in is task bar and every time he tries to install the critical updates (there are presently 16 of them) the install fails.We have tried installing individually but again every time the update fails.He appears to have not updated since December last year.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have never had a problem before with windows updates. however, It says I need to download that windows validation tool so I click on it to download and install and it goes through everything like it should then says it failed to install, 4 times now it comes up error 0X80070005 I went through the thing where Microsoft is suppose to help you they get info and then help you solve it, I stilll haven't heard a thing from them. The funny part is that I downloaded the windows defender (Microsoft Antispyware) and to do so I had to go throught the windows validation and no problem it went through it and I downloaded it. The windows update shield prompts me in my system tray that I need to install the update, so I do, and it says update complete. Then about 15 seconds late the Update shield appears again in my system tray asking me to install this same update.

Whenever I try to open IE, it will open about 50 times. I cannot access my internet at all. I can log onto messanger and anything else but IE.
