Sep 1, 2006
I keep getting a message on my desktop asking me if I want to Restore my active Desktop, it comes up every couple of days.I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot and Trend Micro Anti Spyware Pro and removed whatever was found but still it comes up.
XP PRO Problem Boots up to white desktop, then i have option to "RESTORE MY ACTIVE DESKTOP" Also when i click on start-all programs all i get is a grey area. I have tried restore but it does not work, any ideas ?
I am trying to open my active desktop, but I get a message that says IE cannot locate my active desktop html file. I need to find out how to fix this problem.
I have XP media edition and I was putting a jpg file on my desktop last week when it said something about active desktop. I was in a hurry so I clicked it and since then my desktop icons have dark blue labels, indicating that it is in active desktop mode, I guess.I don't like it but I can't find any way to get out of it and get back to normal. There is nothing in the help files about it or online as far as I can see.I even tried that program that reverts you to a previous day but that didn't work either.
When I click Display Desktop Customize I don't have a "Web" tab. I can't figure why I can't get an active desktop.I'm on Windows XP SP2 and IE 6. Any ideas?
I am running Win2kPro.Quite often when I reboot, everything loads fine with the cursor working but I cannot access anything including the start button. I try ctr/alt/delete and shut down running programs but still no help.I cold reboot a couple of times and finally get the white screen saying to restore active desktop - I do this and every thing is back to normal. That is the reason I think it may have something to do with active desktop but I am not sure.
Somehow or other, I've lost the ability to show web content on my xp pro desktop. In particular, I'd like to show some photos, but the desktop->properties->desktop->custom->web list has no effect at all.
I've encouterd this problem for quite a few times now, and I have the solution, but I was wondering if anyone has an idea if what might cause this.Namely, Active Desktop crashes and when I click the "Restore Active Desktop" button, an error message appears, stating a problem with Internet Explorer Script Error is occuring. Then I do some registry editing, changing an value of a key to zero(HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerDesktopSafeModeComponents Change the value of DeskHtmlVersion is that key, to be more specific) and the problem is solved.
I just reset my computer to factory shipped conditions because it was not working. But now anytime i try to do anything ts nohe message c:Documents and setting sowner desktop is not available or can not find active desktop keeps popping up and i have no idea how to fix it because i cant even load in my spyware programs.
Is there a way to delete things that have been placed on the Active Desktop. I got a zip icon on my desktop that I cannot delete or right click on, but I can drag it though but it goes underneath the recycle bin. How can I delete it?
When closing a an active box on my desktop, it is choppy and seems to close in about 4 stages..like a curtain going down very slowly. Also, if I move an active box on my desktop, it leaves a trail of maybe 15-20 box images trailing behind it for a few seconds. Never had this before. But..only if at my desktop screen. If I have a bunch of windows/boxes open, boxes close quickly and if moved leave no 'trail' behind them
To crete active desktop items that will operate as if they were an IE window, so that when you click a button or link it goes to the page in the desktop item without opening a new window but for the items I create the links always open a new IE window.
Is Active Desktop Controls Greyed Out Ie Set As Background All Not An Option Also In Display Options Background Greyed Out So I Cannot Reset Or Restore Active Desktop Although At Boot Up My Previous Choice Of Desktop Background Shows Until The Icons Are Established Then The Screen Shows Active Desktop Has Been Turned Off Doesnt Support Do You Want To Run On This Page Tried Afew Thing Including Removing Security Programmesr
How does one drag-and-drop a web page to Windows XP Active Desktop? I accidentally did it one day and was delighted with the results, but I can't repeat it and can't for the life of me find any mention online. The only way I can now accomplish the same result--displaying a web page in a window on my desktop, not just a link to a web page--is this sequence: Start | Control Panel | Display | Desktop | Customize Desktop... | Web | New.
I use Firefox almost all the time, so I believe I was using Firefox when the "happy accident" occurred, but I might have been using Internet Explorer.
Can the active desktop be set to a different DPI than IE8.IE8 uses the font DPI setting of the Windows XP operating system. If you change the font DPI from its standard setting of 96 DPI normal to 120 DPI large, IE8 will render the active desktop with the same change, (since the active desktop is a web page) this will in turn change the desktop image (photo), enlarging it so that it no longer fits on to the monitor correctly, if you have 2 monitors the primary windows monitor image will be enlarged to part of the second monitor and part of the image on the second monitor will be missing. IE8 has a setting to change the DPI back to 96 DPI in the compatibility mode but the desktop image is not displayed in the IE8 browser window so it there is no setting to make the desktop image, compatible or 96 DPI. Changing the font size to large under the Appearance tab, instead of the Settings Advanced tab, does not help the small fonts in the active window. If you are using a laptop computer with 1920x1200 Screen resolution this makes the fonts in the active window painfully small. My question is: Is there some way to use IE8 with 120 DPI fonts and get the active desktop image set back to its original size?
When you choose a wallpaper using the standard method (selecting a background on the desktop tab, in the properties window), Windows converts this image to a huge .bmp file (even if you selected a .jpg). Then instead of having a nice 220K wallpaper, you get a 3,15MB wallpaper. To get rid of this, try using active desktop's web capabilities, like this:1. Right click on your desktop and select "properties", then select the "desktop" tab.2. Click on "Customize Desktop".3. Select the "Web" tab and click on "New..."4. Browse for your favorite image and click OK when you are done.5. Make sure "Lock desktop items" is uncheck.6. Click OK, and OK again.7. Now your image is like another window. Drag it to where you want and then right clik over it.8. Select "arrange icons by" and the check "Lock Web Items on Desktop".9. That's it. Now you have a "low memory usage wallpaper".With this you can make interesting things, like using various small wallpapers, or even animated ones!! (you can select an animated .gif too!!). Simply select various images, and when you click OK, drag all them to its right location, and lock the content again.PS: If you want to check the huge wallpaper windows makes, select a wallpaper the standard way, then browse to "C:Documents and SettingsUSER PROFILELocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoft" (where USER PROFILE, is the profile you're using, i.e. Administrator). There should be a file called Wallpaper.bmp, open it and you'll see your cureent wallpaper.
i don't know how but no matter what i try and change my desktop is automatically what my home page is. my desktop is an active web page. it is quite annoying and frustrating because i keep thinking I'm online but my icons are over the top so i can barely read what is there. if anyone has had this problem or knows what to do please let me know. it was just completely cleared of malware and this phenomena happened during the clean up process.
I try to open any folder from the desktop, or explorer(right click start button), or my documents, they don't open, but program shortcuts seem to work. Once inside a program I can navigate to and open folders I couldn't do previousy on desktop. It seems just an error when on the desktop itself.
My wallpaper vanishes and the active desktop recovery screen appears telling me to restore the desktop after somekind of windows error.
I have 3 PC's. I would like to connect to PC1 remotely from PC2 and 3, but there is a problem that I can't figure out. If PC2 is connected (to PC1) and I try to connect with PC3, I will kick off PC2 and connect. I don't wont this. How can I check if there is an active session on PC1 so that anyone who tries to connect first can see that there is another user connected?
I'm trying to set a mandatory wallpaper for a user account with many group policy restrictions. Although I have enabled both "active desktop wallpaper" and "enable active desktop" the wallpaper doesn't appear. I have successfully set the wallpaper for another user with fewer restrictions. The restricted account does have file rights to the wallpaper file. One of the group policy settings must be causing a conflict but which one?
When using internet explorer from time to time when i open or close a web page my active desktop and taskbar disappear and the screen goes black, then it gradually starts to reload fully again. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the same problem, and if so,what is the cause of it?
Is there a way to restore a desktop ?I tried to restore using the System Restore Program in XP Pro but this is a entirely different desktop, it seems 90% or more of my former icons have disappeared forever ?
My desktop looks like this (sorry for the large image) and I don't want the text on my icons to be highlighted. I can't seem to get rid of them, though. The color corresponds to the color of the desktop behind the wallpaper
Somehow I deleted IE from my desktop and now when I want to click on links which must open IE (example: "You Have 3 New Emails" in MSN Messenger") I must open a window if IE before I click on the link or it will not load. How can I put the real IE, not a shortcut, on my desktop?
I am working on an older Dell P4 with Win XP which is having some odd problems. First of all, when it loads up there are no desktop icons, only the background picture. I've tried hitting CAD to see what I could see but all that happens is that the hourglass comes on for a second and then goes away. Same thing happens with ctrl-shift-esc. You can not bring up the Task Manager menu. Clicking the right mouse button also does not bring up a menu. I figured that I might try to do a system restore in Safe Mode though when I restart and hit F8 and choose to go to the safe mode, I get the "Safe Mode" text around the outer edges of the screen, but still no desktop icons. I haven't found much in the CMOS which I can play around with, just standard settings options.
As far as I know, this computer was working ok until a few days ago when it started to intermittently have the no desktop icons problem. The user says that the problems seemed to correlate with their virus program, though I am not sure. I have tried all the startup under options under the F8 menu and booting with the XP sys disc to see if any rebuilding could be done though have made no progress.
I've been trying over 2 to 3 weeks to solve this issue. Hopefully, THG can offer a distinct solution that works.Problem: My Windows XP Home Edition is "Stuck" in the "Extended Desktop" mode. I have only 1 monitor (an Acer H233H). Acer offers NO support; just a run-around. I tried to find out from them if there's a problem with their drivers.I noticed the problem recently when updating 'security' fixes, etc. from Microsoft.Normally, I run my system in 1280x800dpi. It used to work fine that way.By right-clicking the desktop and choosing a .jpg graphic, I could perform each of the 3 display options with no problem; (stretch, center, tile). However, now the following happens. When I choose "Center," the graphic is displayed on my monitor 'centered' in the virtual 1280x800 area. In other words, it is located toward the right side and lower right portion of my monitor's physical display area.
The real problem is when I choose to "Stretch" the same image, it stretches it to the full 1280x800 size, and (NOT TO MY PHYSICAL SCREEN SIZE)!It did not use to work that way. It used to always center and/or stretch to fit my physical screen size, even while in 1920x1080 resolution.HOW DO I GET IT BACK TO NORMAL? * I've updated my ATI drivers w/CCC. * I've updated my Acer monitor drivers to their latest offering. * I've reverted back to older ATI drivers versions to test with, but that didn't work either. Note: the only thing that DID WORK (more or less) was when I used a tool called "System Tweaker" (by Uniblue) and had it FORCE WINDOWS TO USE CLASSIC MODE. The display worked perfectly, but I began getting "Windows.EXE" critical errors, Memory location Errors, etc.
I'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.
'PC Pitstop utility did not load.'
