Start Run Regedit Not Working

Sep 26, 2005

When I try to execute regedit.exe from Start->Run the only thing that happens is the DOS prompt command box flashes on my screen for a second and then nothing. Hte registry editor does not open. The only way I can access the reg editor is to click on the regedit.exe file directly in my system.I am new to XP but I swear I was able to execute the reg editor from the run line before, jus tlike in WIN98 and 95.

Speed Up Menu Display - Start Regedit

Aug 12, 2002

When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy.  For the fastest computer experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero.  This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly.Start Regedit.  If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right. Right on it and select Modify. Change the value to 0 Reboot your computer. Note from forum Admin - a setting of zero (0) is virtually instantaneous - experiment with other settings (200 or 300 or 400 perhaps) to see what you are most comfortable with.

For some reason, my computer decides to not let me click on the Taskbar/start menu/system tray area. It stays updated, with whatever I open, but I just can't click on anything. Or I should say, clicking has no effect. Right OR Left. This seems to come and go with restarts. But not every restart more randomly.I am running Windows XP with SP2.

Shortcut To SEARCH On Start Menu Not Working

Mar 17, 2007

In the last few weeks I have noticed that if I try to search for a file or folder by clicking "Search" on the start menu I am not able to open the search window. I used to be able to do it this way until quite recently. I can however, search by opening a new explorer window and hitting the "Search" button on the tool bar.I have looked on Microsoft KB for a solution and tried repairing it by following Article ID:913503, to no avail. I also tried doing a system restore but no help. The problem has occurred on both my Desktop PC as well as my Laptop.Has anybody else come across this problem, and more importantly found a solution.I'm running XP MCE on both machines, with Norton Internet security on my laptop, and Zonealarm Pro Security Suite on my desktop PC.

Tried Turning Compute / Not Working / Windows Didn't Start Successfully

Apr 25, 2008

I've just tried turning my computer on this morning and it's not quite working - I'm on a friends computer at the moment.I'm running window XP, I have recently had some help from the 'spyware, malware' section of this forum in removing some virus's and trojans, we managed to stop all the intial problems however now. When I turn the system on, it does it's first page fine (the one that has the system information) then goes to the screen that says "windows didn't start successfully, a recent hardware or software change might have caused this" and gives me the start up options of 'safe mode', safe mode with networking', 'safe mode with command prompt', 'start windows normally' and 'last known good configuration'. I've selected all the options once and they all do the same thing - once selected it goes to the windows xp screen and looks likes it's loading then a blue screen with some information on it pops up for a micro second, the system then restarts itself and goes back to the safe mode options screen.

Won't Run REGEDIT Not Even Safe Mode

Dec 18, 2006

Another day, a different computer, new baffler: A Dell Inspiron 1100 that I'm working on will not let me run the registry editor. I've tried in safe mode only to get the message "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:00cf IP:0656 OP:fe ad 06 d9 02" and I get the choices of Ignore and Close. Ignore doesn't ignore, and so I can only close. I've run AVG which found nothing. Squat. CCleaner had a lot to do but didn't fix the problem. Wanted to run Spybot but the first thing it does it download updates and this notebook won't see the network... everyday truly is a new challenge.
