I just finished adjusting the services just in case there was something messing with my start up time. Surprisingly enough while the system might have benefited from the services tweaking the start up time is still 2:00 exactly every time. I have an uptime counter on the desktop so as long as it hits 2:00 the network icon appears and together the Bitdefender internet security. I uninstalled bitdefender just in case and this isn't the problem. It looks like my wireless network does not start before 2 exact minutes have passed. The system and everything starts in around 30-40 seconds. Then it is completely idle and when 2:00 minutes have passed the CPU usage goes up again and the network icon appears. Is it possible for the network to wait 2 minutes before it starts? If yes can I change that somehow? Help!! arrg! EDIT: After more service tweaking I managed to make the the wireless to start fast, together with everything else. Now Bitdefender starts after 2 minutes.

windows xp. when i go on an online course sometimes but not all the time the cpu will run at 100%. I have had a look in task manager and under process(es) under cpu it tells me that runa5w32.exe is running at 100%........this will last for 10 minutes or so then it will drop to a normal 5%, where i can then carry on with my course with out any problems. this also happens alot when i even start the computer up, when i am just on the desk top it will run at 100% for 10 minutes or so, and that come's down to svchost.exe
I have 3 svchost.exe.....1 svchost .exe network service.....and 1 local service. AS i say this doe's not happen every time but it can be a pain some times as i carn't do much with either off these when one of them is running at 100%. just thought i would post to see if there is anything i could do.

Computer in question is a Dell Inspiron 1100, Intel celeron 2.0ghz, 128mbram, xphome sp2
The system takes almost 3 minutes to boot to desktop! I have tried removing nearly everything in startup using msconfig. I've run virus check (Norton), Spyware Removal checks (Adaware and Spysweeper), checked hijack log for any problems (almost empty), removed temp files, tweaked performance options, themes, removed unwanted programs, emptied recycle bin...everything I can think of to speed it up. The system doesn't have alot of extras on it so I'm perplexed. I tried loading another virus program on to see if maybe norton isn't working and its missing something but I got an error message about a .dll (I should've written this down!)

Ever since I've had broadband my pc seems to have screwed up. Now if we connect to the internet the startbar freezes for 10 minutes. Even after 10 mins we have to press Crtl+Alt+Delete. I think it may be spyware as the system has slowed down too. I'm using xp home edition.

Well, while I was walking upstairs, I accidentally dropped the computer on the floor as it slipped through my fingers. When I turned on the computer, it booted correctly, except that its slower. I clicked on the start menu, and it takes about 30 minutes, just for it to pop out.

My computer works really well, the only problem is, when I start or shutdown my computer, it's very very slow. It's appears to be frozen for a minute or so and then start or shutdown. It does start or shutdown properly but it's slow. It can take up to 2 - 3 minutes to either start or shutdown.I noticed that when I start my computer, I see the Windows Update yellow shield appear near the clock and then goes away. I'm not sure if it's related but thought I would let you know.

XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address.

Explorer.exe very slow to show sub directory after clicking on C Drive
1) I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a fairly new Dell Dimension 8300 series with a Pentium 3 processor and 1 Gig of Ram. I have 100 gig hard drive of which about 50 gigs are full of all types of files, avi, mpeg, jpeg, audio files, program files, you name it!
2) I have downloaded all of the latest Windows XP updates.
3) My computer starts fine and opens to the standard desktop fairly easily and quickly.
3) I then click on explorer.exe icon on my desk top and Window Explorer opens.

computer (WinXP SP2 - 1GB RAM) just started in the last day or two to load really slow -- it takes a good half hour or more to get to the point where you can click on an icon and it takes a few minutes to open. Don't even ask about the internet. it did not download anything in the last few days and has no idea why this is happening.

My problems are a very long boot up (go away and make a coffee length) and also slow running, especially in opening progs for the first time ie, very slow to open Word initially, then much faster opening subsequent Word files. Even so, the laptop has slowed considerably and is often hesitant.

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side. and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished 10-15 minutes it will slowly start up in regular fashion

My Toshiba Tecra laptop 8100 with XP is Slow/Slow/Slow!
When turning on, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to settle down. Once it stops grinding and I try to start any application -- such as Internet Exployer, it takes another 5 to 10 minutes. I have Nortons 360 and another anti-virus application that gives me the indication that all is O.K. How can I speed this machine up

I've gone through a lot of the threads in here and tried a lot of fixes, and I'm still having problems.
I have a Gateway, Windows XP laptop that's about 1 year old. A little over a week ago, it started "running slow". It's slow to start up (takes about 5-10 min), the mouse "sticks" sometimes although that is an intermittent problem, when I have multiple applications minimized (outlook express, firefox, My Documents, AIM), it's slow to toggle between them, and it's slow to open folders in My Documents.

My desktop has been slowing down over time. Start up you could almost make a cup of tea between on button and being usable. Performance picks up, but not what it used to be.Could someone advise me if a problem lies in this area and what to add/remove. Also there are 3 other user accounts, do I have to run seperate logs for these, or will changes I make carry over (ps. I am administrator).

when i run a virus scan using blueyonders pcguard this failed about 3/4 of the way through. The next day when starting up my computer it took about 20 minutes to boot.As i didnt have much to lose i completely formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp. I have not installed pcguard again after a few problems with this so i have chosen avg anti virus and zone alarm.Even after a clean install my problem is still there. I have opended the computer and cleaned any dust and checked that the fans are working and still have long start up problems.I have also run chkdisk and this showed nothing but took about 2 hours. One thing i have noticed is that when windows does start the theme tune is very distorted and crackly.I have now updated to windows service pack 2 still same problems. Im not sure what else i can add as this is my first post at this sort of thing.

I did an online speedtest (Speakeasy and it was about the usual as I have always got, I pay for ectra fast to Comcast also. Computer: its a Dell Dimension 8200 (about 3 yrs) 512 mb ram Pent 4 1.80 microprocessor, I am going to put more mem in (i can put up to 2 gb) but wasn't thinking I need to just I never get a low mem nag.

as the title says my computer takes forever to start. It is a new installation of Windows XP Home as supplied by my Laptop Manufacturer Fujitsu Siemens. I have all the recent updates but this hasn't helped. From day one of the installation it has taken around 2 minutes to start. I have checked for Spyware with Adaware and Spybot and Destroy. I have ran Trend Housecall Anti-Virus online scanner and Panda Online Anti-Virus and nothing. My resident Anti-Virus software is Nod32 and it has detected nothing.I have followed so many guides to try and speed things up but it hasnt done anything. The only things starting up are the virus scanner, freepops(for my Hotmail account) and my synaptics keypad. I have tried disabling them all and its just as slow. I have turned off services that certain websites assure me I do not need and nothing. I have one Unsigned Driver for my WLAN Card but the Supplier doesnt have a signed driver available. It's a Sitecom WL-517 Wireless Broadband Kit PCMCIA adapter. I have uninstalled the device to see if this might be the problem but it still doesnt effect startup time.
I downloaded Bootvis to look at where the time is going and what it shows. It seems to spend an age loading drivers and looking at the Prefetch files this accounts for about 40 seconds. Then it spends another 45 seconds at Windows Logon and Services. From here I have a gap of about 45 seconds where it does nothing it just pauses for another 45 seconds. I have ran Bootvis so that it optimised the system but this did nothing. Having read further I discovered that Windows XP more or less does a BootVis optimisation at every startup and so this would have done nothing anyway. Because of this I ran the Windows XP Home Cd and repaired the Installation so it should be relatively fresh.I must say I am at a loss as to where the problem is.

It has Bullguard Anti Virus and it updates on startup, basically it is so slow that until bullguard has updated you can't do anything at all and this takes as long as ten minutes at times. by comparison, my own PC also has bullguard and although its a little slow until it has updated, it only takes a couple of minutes.
This is a P4 2660 Mhz Dell with 1gig ram and using AOL Broadband. I ran a HJT log as soon as the PC would let me, whilst the bullguard update was still sunning and it is as follows:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 08:35:21, on 28/09/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705)
Boot mode: Normal
I can also take a log once the PC is fully up and running ,My only ideas regarding the slowness is that there is AOL spyware and computer check-up software running at times along with the bullguard so perhaps its just too much. Also, is the couponreport.net item in the log safe?
