Self Activated - Wide Dissemination
Jun 22, 2005
I recently purchased a new computer and was not connected to theinternet when the product activation wizard popped up so I closed it.The next day, after establishing an internet connection I decided toactivate XP. I could not figure out how to open the wizard so I wentto the help area to try and figure out how to open it. (Thectivation icon was not in accessories/system tools). When I thentried to run the wizard the computer informed me that XP was alreadyactivated. Could this have happened on its own? I had not enteredny product ID data at all and had not been to any MS sites. I amcross posting this for wide dissemination and apologize if thisoffends anyone.

I have several items in my Scheduled Task. When I look on the window of Schedule Task, it shows 4 of the programs as Running. Nothing is happening, they just keep running and the task do not get activated.

I am changing from home to pro hopefully just using the OEM XP pro upgrade. The home hasn't been activated with a key yet because I don't have one. Will OEM XP upgrade come complete with a key or do I need to purchase full version of XP to get the key. Granted I purchase the XP upgrade with a valid registration key and COA.

I added some new software to my Pc (Win XP system) and now I notice that when I use the Start - All Programs - and view my list of programs I have 3 x Wide Columns but I can't se the 3rd column fully as the first 2 are really wide pushing the 3rd nearly off the screen.
How to narrow this view list.I tried to 'drag' the walls of the colunm but that option is not available.

I installed a copy of XP Home Upgrade. I wanted to see if the machine could handle it. The XP runs beautifully. Of course, I cannot activate it and it's not my intent to circumnavigate the activation. I will now gladly purchase XP Home Upgrade. My question: can I install the store bought XP Home upgrade OVER the non-activated copy? Or should I re-format C: and just rebuild the machine?

I just got my motherboard replaced as the old one was not installed correctly. Ever since, even doing the smallest thing like rolling the mouse wheel will make the computer go up to 70, 80, even 90% computer usage. Also, I cannot seem to run games now because my Direct3D is apparently not activated.

I also have been using a Dell 19" LCD (normal) monitor...using the analog connector rather than the digital one. When I hooked up the Samsung this afternoon, I got the desktop and installed the drivers because although the screen looked fine, I had a black 3" wide strip down the right hand side so the desktop wasn't full screen. I used the buttons on the monitor to make that adjustment and immediately everything 'stretched' to the right and the icons and fonts looked elongated.I have to tell you also that I normally use 1024x768 for my resolution. Using digital connector I remember it automatically went to the largest resolution available and everything was so tiny not only on the desktop but also on the net that I couldn't see anything. Digital would not let me readjust back down so I went back to the analog. The wide screen LCD is also using analog.

when I go to set a picture as the desktop background it stretches it to fit, fine... but if you dont want everyone looking wide you set it to centre but when I do that it zooms right in on the picture instead of displaying it in its original size on the screen.... why is this? is it because the picture from the camera is massive or is this an XP bug?

"Help and Support" no longer work on my computer when activated from the START menu. I have no idea when it stopped working. When it's activated, HELPCTR.EXE runs for a few seconds and then exits. No help window. No entries in any of the event logs. Nothing to give me a clue. I have an HP m1180n (Pent 4) running the latest version of Windows Media Center.

When Windows adds a new monitor using the standard driver, can it detect the aspect ratio? When I hooked up mine, all the resolution choice were for 4:3 monitors. There were no widescreen options. It should choose the monitor's native resolution on its own if the monitor is an LCD.
