How can I remove the Windows Messenger Icon from my Notification/Taskbar area? I never use Windows Messenger and want to eliminate it.
I am running Windows XP on a HP Pavilion ze2000.I think I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger. Actually, I think I have several problems:
1. Messenger tries to load in my tray when I start the computer. It never did this before. It also does the same when I connect to my broadband via dialler. At the moment I am denying access through Zone Alarm. Is this normal?
2. In All Programmes I have a Windows Messenger Icon and a Windows Live Messenger Icon. Again, is this normal? There is only an option to remove Live Messenger in Add or Remove Programmes.
3. There is a "1 contact pending" message above the contact list in my Live Messenger, which leads to a "page not available" message when I click on it.
3. When I close Live Messenger, I get multiple "RPC Server Not Available" warnings which I keep closing but keep reappearing. They appear too fast for me to close them, so I have to restart my machine.
I was trying to remove windows messenger by going to control panel -> add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components I misread the directions for this windows XP setup box and made it so that only windows messenger had a checkmark because I thought this meant that only windows messenger would be modified removed unfortunately, this just meant windows messenger stayed the same and all the other components i had installed were removed. I know they are still on my computer since for accessories/games I can go to start -> run and type in something like "winmine" and minesweeper will open up, however if I go to the start menu and look in games it is empty

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It seems to be integrated with absolutely everything.I have tried clicking on the Tools-Options-Preferences, and unchecking the relevant boxes.I have also tried going into the administration tools sections-services-rightclick messenger and it is displayed as "disabled" yet sure as fate it is still in my system tray box with the white X on the red background on it! This is so frustrating.

View 12 Replies View Relatedon my computer I have had a "safely remove hardware" icon in the task tray that I cannot remove or get to operate successfully.
the problem is that whenever I've attempted to "stop" the hardware I always get a message saying, "The ****device cannot be stopped now. Try stopping the device again later. The device is described as "generic volume", with what appears to be some form of identification number.
please tell me whats this how I can remove it and the icon from the taskbar
P.S. - I've newly learned that this "device" with it's icon in the system tray is the hard drive (by comparing the associated ID # indicated in the "properties" window with the hard drive # in the device manager window). I certainly don't want to remove the hard drive, but does anyone know why an icon for this device would appear in the taskbar, or know how to remove the icon only?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI desperately need to remove the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.I can't stand having a cluttered desktop. I know that this has been discussed here several times, but I have yet to find a solution. I'm using an ancient Dell 3500 notebook with XP Pro. I've had an old 3com Ethernet PC Card for years, and I wanted to use it in XP. As I'm sure you all know, it puts that annoying icon in the system tray. In Windows 2000,they had a way to make it so that the icon was not required to be displayed, but I haven't found a similar option in XP. Is there something I'm missing here, or does anyone know of a third-party app, or anything like that? Also, I know that you can hide inactive icons, but the ">>" thing that shows the condensed tray takes up just a much space as keeping it as-is.

The "safe to remove hardware" icon is missing from the task tray. When a USB device (flash drive) is plugged in there is no way to safely unplug it. I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?

I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the
'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
