When I was through it was gone. I had no idea how to find it so I just unplugged the flashdrive. Is there a way I can make that Icon stay. It is not because it is a hidden icon.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI desperately need to remove the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.I can't stand having a cluttered desktop. I know that this has been discussed here several times, but I have yet to find a solution. I'm using an ancient Dell 3500 notebook with XP Pro. I've had an old 3com Ethernet PC Card for years, and I wanted to use it in XP. As I'm sure you all know, it puts that annoying icon in the system tray. In Windows 2000,they had a way to make it so that the icon was not required to be displayed, but I haven't found a similar option in XP. Is there something I'm missing here, or does anyone know of a third-party app, or anything like that? Also, I know that you can hide inactive icons, but the ">>" thing that shows the condensed tray takes up just a much space as keeping it as-is.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe "safe to remove hardware" icon is missing from the task tray. When a USB device (flash drive) is plugged in there is no way to safely unplug it. I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?

I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the
'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
I could not find the key in the registry that controls the initialization bar so I could turn on again the icon that controls all the USB devices.

I can get it back but next boot it's missing again.
On occasion it does show but not often.
Any ideas on why this happens and how to get it to shoe all the time?
I have installed via a USB socket on my computer a Belkin-branded Wireless USB adapater. This device, although removable, will not be removed regularly from the computer and so I would like the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon to not be displayed because of it, as it currently is. The option to hide the icon via the Taskbar properties is not the fix I am looking for, either.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter using my USB memory stick this evening, I went to the taskbar to click the "safely remove hardware" icon, only to find it was not there. I restarted the computer (my catch-all trouble shooting method) and still did not get an icon when I inserted the USB drive. I also tried plugging in my iPod and got no icon. (Note: the flash drive and iPod function perfectly fine, it's just the "safely remove hardware' icon that's missing - annoying) Did I inadvertantly change some sort of settings. The computer is an HP PCm7250n running XP mediacenter edition, the flash drive in question is a SanDisk cruzer micro.

View 3 Replies View Relatedon my computer I have had a "safely remove hardware" icon in the task tray that I cannot remove or get to operate successfully.
the problem is that whenever I've attempted to "stop" the hardware I always get a message saying, "The ****device cannot be stopped now. Try stopping the device again later. The device is described as "generic volume", with what appears to be some form of identification number.
please tell me whats this how I can remove it and the icon from the taskbar
P.S. - I've newly learned that this "device" with it's icon in the system tray is the hard drive (by comparing the associated ID # indicated in the "properties" window with the hard drive # in the device manager window). I certainly don't want to remove the hard drive, but does anyone know why an icon for this device would appear in the taskbar, or know how to remove the icon only?
The "Safely Remove Hardware" function running in my eMachine XP Home Edition includes USB flash drives in its warning list. While I recognize that mechanical storage devices such as CD/DVD drives, etc., should be addressed, is there any kind of subtle danger to any system functions if I ignore the "safely remove" process when connecting and/or disconnecting USB flash drives?
