How Do You Remove Icon Highlight?
Jun 3, 2005When you click on icon on your desktop it highlights in grey (the icon and the text underneath) - is there a way to turn that off?

Cannot Remove Taskbar (safely Remove Hardware) Icon Or Associated Hardware
Oct 18, 2008on my computer I have had a "safely remove hardware" icon in the task tray that I cannot remove or get to operate successfully.
the problem is that whenever I've attempted to "stop" the hardware I always get a message saying, "The ****device cannot be stopped now. Try stopping the device again later. The device is described as "generic volume", with what appears to be some form of identification number.
please tell me whats this how I can remove it and the icon from the taskbar
P.S. - I've newly learned that this "device" with it's icon in the system tray is the hard drive (by comparing the associated ID # indicated in the "properties" window with the hard drive # in the device manager window). I certainly don't want to remove the hard drive, but does anyone know why an icon for this device would appear in the taskbar, or know how to remove the icon only?
Cannot Remove Icon
Jan 30, 2006Have a desktop icon I cannot remove or move to another folder.The file name is WGTS_100 and its a mod for F1 Challenge 99 02.It failed during down load and I can't get rid of the icon.Deleted everything in the registry but it's still there , looked for it in the the dos window but it does not show up.Help me?

Nov 3, 2006I put a short cut on my desk top from a file attachment I received in an e-mail . The file has been deleted but I cannot delete the icon from my desktop. When I try to delete it I get a message cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk. I have tried the desktop clean up wizzard , tried to delete it safe mode, could not find it in the registry. I run adware and virus scans everyday with no problems detected. I ran a file search and found the shortcut under documents & settings but cannot delete from there either. any ideas?

Oct 14, 2008I am trying to remove an icon that says "install_flash_player", but every time I try, it says "Cannot delete install_flash_player: It is being used by another person or Program. Close any programs that may be using the file and try again."
I've tried shutting down the pc, but that didn't work. I've closed all programs when trying to delete it but it won't go. I then tried opening my task manager to view processes, but am unsure as to which process to end.

Can't Highlight Text & Then Copy
Dec 3, 2006I am just recently having problems when I am on a webpage trying to highlight some text and then copy it somewhere else.My problem is: sometimes after placing my cursor near the text I am trying to highlight and then copy. it will not highlight at all. Or either it does highlight a bit then stops and will not continue to highlight the text so I am able to copy it.How can I fix this problem. I have never had this problem til just a couple of weeks ago.

Dec 19, 2004I got a pc in this the USB SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE ICON keep appearing in the task bar. I want to unload it! When I boot up the pc it tells me it is not compatable with this system anyway - so WHY IS IT LOADING? I didn't choose for it to be there? THought you could hot swap anyway with XP usbs. I want to totally remove the tray icon from near the volume one in the taskbar, so that it would not appear while the program is running. Jul 18, 2005I desperately need to remove the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.I can't stand having a cluttered desktop. I know that this has been discussed here several times, but I have yet to find a solution. I'm using an ancient Dell 3500 notebook with XP Pro. I've had an old 3com Ethernet PC Card for years, and I wanted to use it in XP. As I'm sure you all know, it puts that annoying icon in the system tray. In Windows 2000,they had a way to make it so that the icon was not required to be displayed, but I haven't found a similar option in XP. Is there something I'm missing here, or does anyone know of a third-party app, or anything like that? Also, I know that you can hide inactive icons,but the ">>" thing that shows the condensed tray takes up just a much space as keeping it as-is.

In the standard XP them(blue) the highlight colour is a strong blue while Explorer has the focus. Safely Remove Hardware Icon Is Missing
Nov 12, 2007The "safe to remove hardware" icon is missing from the task tray. When a USB device (flash drive) is plugged in there is no way to safely unplug it. I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?

I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the
'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
