When i go to <Start> Shutdown, and than wait for my PC to shutdown, my computer takes its sweet time doing that, the monitor and everything shuts off but my PC is left running for extra 2-3 min. I am running out of options and I don't know what else did I miss or what else is there to try. Any ideas as to why its working like this? By the way I did try the registry, bios, power management options.
My laptop freezes 9/10 when i choose shutdown and i have to force it by holding down the power button sometimes (4/10) it freezes when you leave it on its own for a while, usually when the screensaver kicked in it would ask for user to log on again..it was when bringing it out of screensaver it would do this - so i disabled the screensaver and now its not as often when it happens - its just if its been left for a while sometimes the screen will go black and freeze, it happened once or twice when logging off and other user goes to log on.. so t appears to be problem with the log on part of the setup
I am operating windows xp, and it is running very slow and does not shut down properly. it is a new dell computer, came with xp, but it is not running well. i have Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&d, and Ad-Aware installed and running, but I think I did it too late. I believe there is alot of unused things running at startup, but I'm not sure how to check them
Ive just reinstalled xp on a toshiba laptop because windows explorer was damaged and no windows would open. Before this, windows was shutting down at random during startup or when running certain programmes. It was easier to reinstall than fix as no data on the pc was needed & it had a restore disk.the restore seemed to be successful. After loading avg, spybot & spywareblaster, I ran spybot. Halfway through, the pc restarted. Tried again, same prob. Tried avg, This had the same result whilst checking the hosts files, It shuts down whilst checking a file around here: c:i386mdmtosh Tried again, same prob.I have now been told that these programmes did the same thing before the reinstall.
i remote into my XP box everything is fine except when i shut down using a shutdown shortcut and other shutdown utilities no matter what after i get booted off the remote session the computer looks like its shutting down then stays on for a few seconds then a BSOD appear. I have been trying to figure out why for the past week and no solution so im hoping someone can chime in..The problem is only on remote if i shut down locally never a single BSOD and no hardware has changed. No driver issues. ive read and tried all the usual solutions. Need someone here to chime in on specifics.Ive also tried to remote in with bare minimum and no go. same thing.
This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.
When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.
I recently noticed that there is a thin bar above my toolbar on the bottom of the screen. It was never there before. This may be simple to fix, I just don't know how to get rid of it.Look at the toolbar on the bottom of the screen, you see the thin bar above it? That wasn't there before. How do I remove it?
I have a custom pc with 512Mb of memory and want to add 1Gb to that.Ive already check at Kingston,Crucial and Gigabyte sites and know I need a DDR-333 memory. I have some questions though.
1.Will I need to add an extra fan to avoid higher temperature anywhere?
2.How can I know if my existing memory stick will work with the new one?
3.Do I need to change any configuration in my computer?
Needed to re install windows xp..........after mucking around for a day, I have now 3 Home editions and one setup, to choose from when I start up the computer........anyone got any idea how to remove the ones that I don't use, so I don't have to choose which one at start up?
I'm running xp, and my c drive has now become c,f and g.when checking in disk management, there are no volume labels assigned. In Disk 0, it shows the three partitions (I've no clue why there are 3, is that standard?)39 MB FAT, 69.81 GB NTFS, and 4.64 GB FAT32.This happened after a failed software install that dell refused to help with (there's a shocker)It's just an annoyance, nothing more, but I would like to get it back to being just the c drive without risking losing anything in the process. Something I can do safely or just live with it?
My daughter's laptop has extra large icons that I cannot get rid of. Also, when she goes to a website, that too is also very large and will not fit on the screen. I have tried to right click and adjust the icons but that does not get them back to normal. I have checked the dpi and that is as small as can be adjusted
the top link to xp is the usable link.the bottom links to the time I accidently installed xp to my spare hard drive when I did a repair install to the first drive.XP was removed from the second drive when I realised what I had done leaving this dead link remaining
for some unkown reason, I have another local disk on in my computer. Instead of my 'C' and my 'd' for recovery, I know have a 'e' local disk. It's 1 gig and about 600 mb used. There are four main folders, CLSetup, Documents and Settings, Program Files and Windows. Also a file call ntldr. In the programs folder there is common files and windows media player. in the documents and settings folder, there is defaut user, local service and networkservice. In the CLSetup folder, there is AP_Pack, inside that, 00, inside that, several files. Of course there are files in all the other folders too.
my pc has 512 ram on 1 stickif I put in another 512 do I have to alter anything in bios setting - or will the pc see it straight away with no adjustments needed
I have 1 memory slot left in my motherbaord and it supports a maximum of 1GB in that slot - I have used the previous 2 with 1GB in each channel running as dual channel memory.
Can Windows XP MCE 2005 work with more than 2GB of memory? I heard that XP with more than 2GB of memory is like Me with more than 512MB. Under Me when I used more than 512MB RAM (768MB) it worked but after performing intensive tasks I has incredibly slow performance to the point where the system almost grinded to a halt!! I wouldnt even dare make full use of the 1GB as I saw articles on MS website saying that 1GB will cause 9x OS's to completely not start at all!! Oh and lets not forget the glorious BSOD - those bring back some memories!
Once I upgraded to XP the 768MB of RAM worked fine. Then went onto 1GB and then afterwards a nice comfy 2GB.
Simply put, if I have 3GB of RAM, will I experience slowdowns or lockups in XP MCE 2005 much like I did in Me, when I had 768MB of RAM? Is 2GB of RAM the "ceiling" in XP MCE 2005 for good reliable performance.
I was trying to free up some space on my computer, so I got into "Add or Remove Programs" to see what I can delete etc. I noticed that there are like five Java updates, they all have that icon next to them.. the cup of coffee thingie. it's in white, except for J2SE where it's in blue. Can I delete some of these updates? Like Update 2,3,5 maybe? Or do they have to stay on my computer.? Should they even show on the list? Do I have them installed?
I have a Sony vaio desktop v3s, pentium, 4 3.40ghz, I have upgraded the memory to 2gb but need more, but Sony say that is the limit, anyone know a way around this
I am getting lag in online games. I checked my running processes and it said that I have 43 running. How do I know which of these I can shut down for good safely? Does that number seem high? Or is that a normal amount?
I could use some guidance here~I had to run a system restore, due to Windows defender app failed to initialize I lost my audio, internet and that's what "Dell" said to do, and lost all my downloads and documents because my CD ROM wouldn transfer to my CD So now the drives are messed up with extra ones added.First my "D" drive is now "F" I have an extra Local disk "D" that when I click on it, it asks me if I want to format it? Extra disk "E" That when I click on it, it has nothing
I have an Epson RX500 all-in-one. When I use the "copy to fax" in the Epson Smart Panel, it sends the scan to XP's fax software. The fax preview shows the page I scanned plus a blank page. It also faxes out the extra blank page. Epson tech said it was XP, so I downloaded a trial version of another fax software. This time the fax preview showed and faxed just one page as it should.
I'm wondering about something thats been bugging me for a bit? What are the extra keys on the keyboard for, or more to the point how does one configure them. The KB I use right now only has three extra keys, a sun, a moon, and another(?) I think for power, or stand bye?? But my sisters KB has mega, hers is a MSN 'netboard'. Is there somewhere I can learn how to utilize the extra keys. When I press any of them now they don't do anything?? Help is appreciated, but this is not a pressing,(pretty punny eh), matter, so please help those who really have a problem first! This is just something I have always wanted to know?? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one?? So Thanks again, Graiskye PS just to be clear I have done a pretty good search of archives before posting question, something I encourage ALL posters to do, saves redundant posts, and you will ALWAYS learn something. I browse the posts all the time just reading the titles and checking threads that interest?
I have WINDOWS XP HOME w/SP2 and i want to make it lighter by cleaning out the extra junk files, preloaded software (Online Services, AOL, etc..).LOG, temp, and other useless files like Prairewind.bmp (it's one of the things i'll never use). Is there a easy way to do this or a MICROSOFT program that--oh forget that.
