I have always been able to disable my internet connections by simply going to Start - Connect To - and right clicking the connection and clicking disable. Well recently it will not allow me to do this. I get this error message titled Error Disabling Connection "It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. The connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug and Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account." This began happening right after I hooked up a USB mp3 player to the computer, so I am thinking that this may have caused the problem. When it automatically loaded the drivers it came up with a message that said that the drivers had not passed windows xp testing but I went ahead and loaded them anyway. The mp3 player does work fine though.
I have finished on the internet and disconnect , I may be playing a game or just working offline , suddenly what ever i am doing dissapears and my internet dial up box appears and asks if i want to reconnect , i say no and it goes for a couple of minits and then its back , does any one know how to stop this happening ,happens at least 10 every half hour ,it just keeps interrupting ,
I am running windows XP and I have a BT Voyager 100 adsl modem. The internet connection seems to disconnect frequently although when i check its status it says it is still connected. The only way to get the connection back is to restart the computer. Also when this happens other programs stop responding and the computer sometimes freezes up.I've run anti-virus and anti-spyware software and they haven't come up with anything.I have quizzed but about but they seem to have run out of ideas.
The oddest thing. About every Wed and either Sat or Sun. The DSL connection or something in Windows won't allow connection, and I can't access online. I have to restart the computer, then all is well until Wed. or Sat/Sun. I've called SBC/Global and they can't find anything. It seems to be a timing thing that resets to Wed and Sat/Sun. I've been keeping track. This started a couple of months ago. Has anyone else encounted this? What to do. Everything goes back to normal when I restart.
I can't disconnect some drives that are mapped on a WinXP Pro workstation. I wanted to remove the drive mapping names as they were badly outdated and so deleted the registry key. where the entries were found and then rebooted. Now the connections show up as "Disconnected Network Drive" but all still work. However, I can't disconnect any of them and the "Disconnected Network Drive" will not update to the name of the machine/share even when I go into the share and use it. Really, this is a test machine because I wanted to apply a reg via policyto clear out the strings on logon/logoff so that these were fixed all over the company. I don't understand why this thing is misbehaving though, the key get's recreated and has the name of one machine, but not the others.
I began having a problem with the dial-up "connect to" function it was disconnecting OK but I couldn't reopen the connection again for several minutes afterward because the Properties window would show whenever I clicked the ISP link So I tried to restore the system, but for the first time ever, any of the restore points I try, all I get after it goes through the process is a message "Could not restore to.There are quite a few restore points and none of them work.First, what would cause this? Then, what should I do about it?
Whenever I "safely disconnect" any USB device (mainly a memory stick or mp3) the icon in the taskbar just disappears, without the appearance of the notification that actually tells you that you can safely remove the device. How can I recover this notification?.
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
I think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.
C:WindowsTemporary Internet Filescontent.ie5, which i cannot seem to do. They say i should see a series of 4 or more random 8 character names like "ADOZMZS1", which again, I cannot figure this out. So if anyone could
do internet users get assigned a unique ip address everytime you connect to the internet? and what is the difference between a ip address and a mac address? different types of a networks?

computer in my possession crashed, and when i reset, my internet has gone wonky. I use MSN as my ISP, and before, i could access internet explorer, or firefox, or any program without ever actually having to sign in to MSN. after the crash, however, i now have to sign in to access internet explorer, firefox, and a couple programs. what angers me, however, is that i DONT have to sign in to access trillian. Limewire, also, will connect, but wont download anything without msn being logged in. How do i get back to how it was? And no, system restore did not work.
I read that in TOOLS--->Internet options--->Advance, there's a setting that I can make the pulldown manu not be truncated. I can't find it for the life of me.
I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.
My users are unable to access the internet via Internet Explorer 7.With Firefox and changes in the proxy it works good, however, unable to access with Internet Explorer.
I'm thinking maybe the user's profile has problem. However, after deleting the user's profile and have her logged in to create a new profile, it still would not work.
How come it works with Firefox but not with Internet Explorer?
My son in law's XP computer connects to internet with IE only. It will not allow site signons or logins. It will not update anti virus (free AVG) or connect with Firefox or Netscape. The firewall is not blocking. I checked all admin service permissions and can't find any problems. I also tried Winsock Fix. I'm stumped on this and don't know what to do next

When I want to access the internet I click the "E" symbol on my desktop, the problem that I get is that I keep getting a getting that pops up in stead of going directly to the MSN page.I keep getting ( Privacy violation 408HTA Warning ) getting that keeps opening up and I can't get it off my computer It is an advertisement to buy some sort of spyware software.
A friend of mine installed the Mozilla browser and I didnt like it so I uninstalled it. Anyways to make a long story short..Since then,In the address bar (ie icon), and all my internet links (internet shortcuts) show as an unassigned file type now. So for instance if I drag an http link from my browser to my desktop...it does not show as an ie link anymore (just a random file type). So when I right click my internet links and say "open with" internet explorer it works. However...when I select the check box "always open with this program" it will not change all of my internet shortcuts appear with the "IE" icon like it should
I am on a cable modem running W2K pro sp2 on a Dell 4400. My cable modem checks out OK as well as my ethernet card. There are no viruses or spyware in the computer as I checked that today. I've been thru level 2 tech support with my ISP and they are saying that the problem lies within the computer. When I open my browser I get the error msg page cannot be displayed and I cannot access any web page

I installed a parental control program for Internet Explorer, but it was not allowing AOL to dial any numbers. Also, after shutting down the AOL, Windows XP would shut down the parental control program saying that it was malfunctioning. So I decided to delete the parental control program from my hard drive, and I used the uninstall program of the parental control program to uninstall it. After the uninstall, I noticed that I could dial and use the AOL browser as usual, but I could not use Internet Explorer. Any web pages that I tried to visit using IE would not display, and Internet Explorer would say, This page cannot be displayed.
All of a sudden, I can't get online. I use MSN and when I click on the icon to access the internet, I get a message "MSN detects no internet connection--We could not detect an internet connection" I've checked all internet and network files/connections. All is fine. I have Verizon DSL, they checked out the puter and said it was a Dell problem.
