View 11 RepliesCame home to a black screen, so i turned it off via power button. tried to turn it back on, got as far as windows xp logo and then it restarted itself. That restart it took me into dos mode saying windows couldn't start because of named a few reasons like new hard/software. Gave the options to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode custom (or something like that), starting windows in the last configuration that worked, or start windows normally.I tried them all, it won't start. It simply keeps rebooting and showing me the same message.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been trying over 2 to 3 weeks to solve this issue. Hopefully, THG can offer a distinct solution that works.Problem: My Windows XP Home Edition is "Stuck" in the "Extended Desktop" mode. I have only 1 monitor (an Acer H233H). Acer offers NO support; just a run-around. I tried to find out from them if there's a problem with their drivers.I noticed the problem recently when updating 'security' fixes, etc. from Microsoft.Normally, I run my system in 1280x800dpi. It used to work fine that way.By right-clicking the desktop and choosing a .jpg graphic, I could perform each of the 3 display options with no problem; (stretch, center, tile). However, now the following happens. When I choose "Center," the graphic is displayed on my monitor 'centered' in the virtual 1280x800 area. In other words, it is located toward the right side and lower right portion of my monitor's physical display area.
The real problem is when I choose to "Stretch" the same image, it stretches it to the full 1280x800 size, and (NOT TO MY PHYSICAL SCREEN SIZE)!It did not use to work that way. It used to always center and/or stretch to fit my physical screen size, even while in 1920x1080 resolution.HOW DO I GET IT BACK TO NORMAL?
* I've updated my ATI drivers w/CCC.
* I've updated my Acer monitor drivers to their latest offering.
* I've reverted back to older ATI drivers versions to test with, but that didn't work either.
Note: the only thing that DID WORK (more or less) was when I used a tool called "System Tweaker" (by Uniblue) and had it FORCE WINDOWS TO USE CLASSIC MODE. The display worked perfectly, but I began getting "Windows.EXE" critical errors, Memory location Errors, etc.
I have installed a program that acts like a docking station (like a Mac's menu). The location of this dock is where the start menu is, and I minimized the start menus. Only except, every time I restart my machine, the start menu is back to its normal size. I am using Win2000.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a Dell GX280 which had issues with its heatsink. Also, at the same time the machine continues to not boot up. It freezes at the Windows XP logo screen. It will not go any further. We think that when the fan started racing the user got worried, pulled the power cord and maybe did damage. However Im still working on fixing it. I can boot up into safe mode, I have disabled all non microsoft items in services and all items in start up and I continue to have the same problem, freezing at start up.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu, etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
An infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:WindowsSystem32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:oot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedLast night, I had a few friends over, and one of them had spy sweeper with antivirus. I was going to install that, but later decided that i would just re install my norton antivirus (because it wasnt do the live update needed). I re installed, and after a nice long full system scan, my system came up clean. I continued using my computer for some time last night, and then all of a sudden, the desktop icons disappeared, as well as the start menu. So what does someone do in this situation? I restarted my computer and tried and to hope for the best. Well, it turns out that restarting the computer allows the icons to pop up for only about 3 seconds, and then they disappear again and im left with my wallpaper.I opened up internet explorer by quickly double tapping the icon when they appeared, but then they disappeared again. So I hit control alt delete, and then started a new task which was called explorer. This brought up the icons again, but only for a few seconds...again. So I ran norton again, but only found 1 tracking cookie after an entire full system scan. I have no idea what to do, but im so sick of paying to get things fixed, and everything has been breaking down on me for no reason.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am seeing a number of problems related to windows explorer:Explorer won't start from the desktop icon. Selecting it from Accessories simply returns you to the desktop. My desktop is messed up. It displays a background plus 3 items in the column down the left side - "System Tasks", "Other Places", and "Details". Previously it was just a desktop with icons. I moved the contents of "My Documents" from my "C" drive to the E drive (different partition) in case the partition was failing, but yesterday the E version of MY Documents disappeared. I'd like to get these back. Before the folder disappeared, I would open it and see a treeview of all the subfolders. Immediately afterwards, starting at the top of the tree, the "+" would all disappear, just leaving folders. Also, some of the folders were white, not yellow. I suspect the situation is a combination of screwed up privileges and registry problems, but I'm not sure where to start.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the welcome screen and put in my password, windows starts to load my settings, then once it reaches the desktop, it logs off. It acts as if there's a log off command pinned to start up. I did have a spyware/adware problem right before this started. I scanned and had the spyware program (Spyware Doctor) clean the disk. Things after were running fine and had even rebooted both hard and soft a couple of times without any problem. I turned off the computer before leaving home for a few hours, came back, turned on the computer and the behavior described above started. I called a tech in town and he suggested to try booting in under the last known configuration used and if that didn't work, to try booting in safe mode. If that didn't work, then he'll need to see the computer. Unfortunately, neither worked and they aren't open again until Monday. I'm using a friend's laptop to find tech support between now and Monday morning, hoping to save a trip.
The computer I have doesn't have a familiar brand name like Compaq or Dell and I cannot remember the name. However, it is a typical IMB compatible like Compaq with Windows XP Home Edition, has a Pentium 4 processor and 1.something gigs of memory.
I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen I start up Windows all I see is the background. Just my wallpaper, with no start bar, no taskbar, no desktop icons, etc. BUT, oddly enough, when I check running processes in Task Manager, explorer.exe IS running. The only way that I can get it to "appear" or run correctly is if I end that task, and then run a new explorer.exe. Also, when this happens, my computer doesn't seem to have completely loaded all drivers, such as sound. I have not installed any odd programs lately, and I have run a bunch of spyware checks as well.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches: ...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard, and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
