I have a two-year old Sony VAIO (big memory, fast).I have a new problem which started recently:When I click a desktop icon, I get a Windows Explorer error message. I can open the desktop icon by right-clicking and using "open", but after I receive this error message the machine eventually crashes.
View 8 RepliesMy XP desktop locks up/freezes randomly. Everything is still on the screen. Looks normal, fans run in the PC, but is it frozen. I have to shut it off and restart. Then it works fine until it randomly locks up. It sometimes gives the blue screen if im in middle of using it but most times it will just lock up. Other times it will reboot itself. Started happening a few weeks back but seems to have gotten progressively worse. I used to last for a few hours but now it can happen seconds after I log in ...other times it will let me use for 15-20 mins.
View 2 Replies View RelatedTo try to make a long story short...this is a Micro-Star MB with Energy Star BIOS.I had to buy a new Xp Home edition CD and do a clean install.Before I did this though,..I could go to MSI and they would search my PC for updates concerning the mother board for intergrated hardware and so on.I messed up the operating system(XP Home) so I bought a new one (XP Home) and did a clean install twice.The second clean install on a different hard drive cause I thought there was a problem with the other one.Called Microsoft and went through all that stuff to.NOW,...before I did ANY of this stuff,..I could go to MSI.com and get updates automatically with a program they have for their products.BUT now when I try to get updates,...when I click on the "Search my computer now for hardware updates" tab,..the whole PC locks up,...clock and all.On the first clean install
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem, everytime that I boot my machine, for the first 15 mins or so it is kinda frozen. Let me explain, If I open any program, it appears to open and then freezes.I have close it with task manger. I can open folders but I cannot open any items in them. I can open control panel but none of the tools, if I click say printers and faxes, an hourglass shows, then nothing. Now 15 mins or so later, magically everything works, printers and faxes pops up and i get notices about force closing the programs. The computer will run fine after the first 15 mins, I have left it on for 2 days straight with no problems. This has been happening for 6 months.I have tried msconfig to try and narrow the problem down, the problem did not occur until i got to services. I went through each and everyone of them and I got to a "Server" service ,this is a Microsoft Service, i disabled it and rebooted, the issue stopped! So I am thinking maybe this is related to the issue. I believe I need this particular service because I share files and printers between the computers in my home and this is my primary desktop.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis issue just started this weekend. I am the tech guy in the house (programmer / web dev so naturally im a great troubleshooter right?). My dad's PC just developed a most irritating issue. It will seemingly randomly freeze. When he told me of the issue he said that 9 times out of 10 it locked when running the web browser. I had him update to firefox 3.5 and IE8 and get any windows updates he can. Problem seemed to go away for a few hours but it came back. Most recently it has frozen at the screensaver which I then disabled and set the screen to turn off after 10m. Thinking that there might be an issue with the video driver I updated those as well to 186.11 (i think). Haven't had an issue since that I am aware of, but I doubt that the issue was with the screensaver
View 14 Replies View RelatedFor the past week my computer has been locking up at random times, now I am pretty dang sure I know the general cause, which would be my own fault -.- I just moved to a new place, long story short, mixed up my surge protector with my standard power bar, rolling power outage hit, turned my computer back on and wham, it randomly locks up...I restored it back to about a week ago, and it seems to work fine (sans a few random freezes upon booting up) Of all the times it has frozen, it only gave me one BSOD

Of late, it has taken to simply locking up after sitting idle for some time. Because it does this while sitting idle, I thought it might be related to powering down to stand-by or screen saver. I turned both of those of, ie, system is always on, no screen saver. It still happens.When it happens, nothing works. The mouse moves, but does not work. The keyboard does not work. It matters not if any programs are running or not. I am forced to cold boot.

If one of the staff here has a better suggestion and can move it there I would be greatly appreciative. Now on to my problem.I have a computer here that randomly seems to lock up. What I mean by that is, you can be typing an e-mail and the words stop displaying, a few seconds later the screen will flash and your text will start filling in (it isn't suddenly there, you can actually watch it fill in the letters). Nothing moves on the screen at all until the flash.
The machine itself is a fairly robust machine (Dell Precision WorkStation T3400 with E7300, 2.66, 3MB Wolfdale Processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro NVS290 graphics card
A while ago my pc started randomly freezing when i booted up, usually have to reboot three or four times before it works properly, i guess i must have a virus or something but no scans i run pick up anything obvious. Also when i try to shutdown, the screen freezes on the "Windows is preparing to shut down" screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2004 Toshiba Satellite w/Celeron processor, M35X-S149, with Windows XP. A few days ago it started having this problem where the entire screen freezes up and I have to turn the computer off and restart. It freezes anywhere from 2 minutes to 4 hours into a session, but it freezes up every time. I don't know if this is related, but every time I restart, I get a message window from an application called Button Manager v1.83, that says: "No INITIO External Storage Device Found" and it has two buttons to click on, either : LED ON or LED OFF. I ran a virus scan, and an adaware scan, but it didn't help. My husband wants to throw out the computer and buy a new one, but there must be a way to fix this. Is it a virus

View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen I opened up the case, the northbridge heatsink clip had snapped off. I put the case on it's side and reseated the heatsink, and put a case fan over it. I reformatted and installed winXP. The computer freezes a minute or so after entering windows. Also ran ubuntu linux off a usb stick and it would freeze after 5 or so minutes. Ran memtest and no errors after 9 hours, Speedfan s.m.a.r.t says the hard drive is fine. I booted into Safemode, and ran orthos small ffts cpu test, and no errors after an hour.

However my laptop became so burdened with viruses that it can no longer be logged onto without freezing anywhere between 5 - 40 seconds so it's hard to do anything about it, also it's a little embarrasing to ask for help as most of the viruses were caused by... How shall I put this, websites of ir-reputable nature! This happened about a year ago and just before this had happened I had uninstalled World of Warcraft and quit. But now I have come to start again on my Brother's laptop identical to my own which he no longer uses but there's a problem being that there's not enough memory I have literally trawled forums and websites to clear as much off as I can, I have removed basically every programme, deleted my Brother's account, ran every disc cleaner under the sun and defragmented the hard drive. This has given me a measley 3 gigs so I'm now sittig on 7 gigs of memory.

The PC was purchased around August last year, and around November it started freezing up 3 to 4 times a day. When it does so, the power button has to be held down to restart, and the HDD light is light constantly. I intially tried a lot of different things, such as virus scans, hijack this, Anti Spyware etc etc. All of which found nothing.I have now ran some HDD tests and RAM tests which both showed nothing. I dont really want to rebuild again, as I think the same thing will happen again.

I recently upgraded OS on Dell Dimension XPS t600 to Windows Xp SP2. Witgh SP2, it freezes every 6 seconds for about a second and then releases. It is consistent as if it is polling for something. Even the hard drive crunching stops for that second. I have tried installling all MS updates but it did not help.

View 14 Replies View Relatedmy computer at home is constantly freezing every single time I start the computer up. It gets to the screen where you can click on a user to login but then it freezes and to restart I need to hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds. I looked through all of my discs and all I have is my Camera Setup, Windows 95, Printer Setup, Acer Recovery Discs (5 of them) and an Acer eMode Management disc. The only thing I have tried so far is to use the Acer Recovery discs but the problem still persists. I have no Windows XP disc and I can't remember getting one when I bought the computer but I might have it somewhere. I'm not sure if it came with the computer because the Acer Recovery discs basically re-installed Windows itself.
It all started when I was on the computer and a storm hit us and there was a power outage while I was on the computer. Since then it just freezes at the login screen. Ask questions and give any suggestions you can give, it is all appreciated as I am desperate to get this fixed! I have no important files on the computer so a reset of the whole computer is fine to do but what discs do I need and how do I do it. I am unsure if it is a virus related problem or a hardware related issue.
When I start XP it gets to the Black page that shows Windows XP and the small bar beneath it that gives the appearance of loading. Once it gets here it just stops however, the bar keeps going. I am able to start in safe mode. I have switched video cards and disabled my USB ports. I don't know what else to do.

It goes through the format, setting up partitions, and then when it gets to copying files, it goes to 8% and locks up. I have tested the motherboard, the memory and the HD finding no errors. View 8 Replies View RelatedJust got back from holiday with my dell inspiron 1501 left in hibernation, turn on took 5-7 minutes to boot till I entered my password, its usually long but this was longer all was fine until I got fed up of computer been slow and explorer.exe not responding (happens often) so I forced shutdown. When I tried rebooting all was fine up until the logon where I could type my password in but then in would freeze and many reboots in safe mode etc. safe mode would freeze instantly btw. I have just managed to get onto my wallpaper 55 mins after entering password and pressing enter but nothing up on screen. Managed to get task manager up as well 27 processes running CPU 0%, doesn�t look anything fishy in the process list the only one that caught my attention was BCMWLTRY.EXE 4996k but that looks like a windows live add-on, and smss.exe not sure about that one.

I got some time and checked the available disk space. Out of 33MB I had 10MB left. I cleaned some stuff up and compressed the disk. Things worked well all day yesterday and then today we got this again.

My primary hard drive recently went nuts, so I decided to make my second drive the master. I completely disconnected the former master drive and set the former slave drive as the master. The newer harddrive is 250G and had been added thru XP. I only had some folders with music, video and such saved onto it. I wanted to keep those files so I didn't format the drive. And since they are large I didn't move them off the drive.
Installation proceeded normally until it reached "32 minutes remaining" and showed that it was "setting up network." The system just stays there. (The "new features" messages on the right side of the screen continue to cycle thru their list, and the little progress squares at the lower right continue to flash in sequence.) I had read thru some forums that hardware may be the cause so I removed the following: phone modem card, NIC, graphics card and the sound card. This left me with just the motherboard, floppy drive and cd-rom drive. Rebooted and still freezes at the same spot
I have responded to a question in another conference which asks for help with a failing re-install whith 32 mins to go. and said I would ask in here This happened to me and was sorted by Microsoft help desk (using the last of my 2 free support calls attendant with purchasing a full copy of XP) - by a lady in India and lots of waiting Musak and a high phone bill! - but I can't for the life of me recall the keysrtokes the support lady took me through to "continue the process". View 3 Replies View Relatedjust found the web site and am hoping someone could help me as i am getting nowhere on the Microsoft web site. I have just re-built a friends machine and am now just using windows update to update XP and everything else. I have no problems getting the small security updates but i now need SP1 and/or sp2. The SP wizard begins and starts inspecting the machine, then as soon as its starts creating a SP1 or SP2.cab file the machine freezes. Any ideas why this is happening? The machine had SP2 on it before it needed re-building.
