Missing Components Or Contracted A Virus?

Aug 13, 2009

I ourchased this E-machines from a pawn shop about 2 months ago. Its about 6 years old. It's using Windows XP Home. I've had steady problems since day 1.
First, I cannot restore. It has no disc and Gateway will not let me buy a recovery disc, because the system is not in warranty. Second, I just bought a printer. I can't install the printer, because the Wizard keeps telling me the Print Spool isn't working. I can't turn it on. I go into MSconfig and it is checked, but it won't run.I also keep getting a window telling me some program is missing a dll. paretlogic/dll? I have no idea what the previous owner did to the thing and I can't even restore it to fix it. I've run a reg cleaner and that doesn't help either. What next? I just wanna use my printer.

Reinstall But Only Have Recovery Cd - Contracted A Trojan Virus

Sep 21, 2008

I contracted a Trojan Virus on my laptop. A friend removed my hard drive, connected it to his PC and says he's now deleted the Virus but that it's screwed with my registry. My Disk Drive doesn't work, neither do my USB ports or speakers. My friend says I need to reinstall windows but I'm worried about losing my files. I've got most backed up but about 3 months worth that aren't and I can't afford to lose them. I read the reinstall thread and it said my files would be fine, which is great, but I don't have an XP CD - only a Toshiba 'Recovery' CD that came with my laptop and cheerfully proclaims that it will delete all my files.

It had an option for an automated repair thing but then it asked for a floppy disk - I didn't have one. When if finally came to the window with an option to repair the system, I hit 'r' It then said there was no hard drive available and could not proceed with the repair.

NTLDR, NTDETECT And BOOT.INI Missing, Virus?

Aug 30, 2007

It started with the NTLDR is missing error,so I load the recovery console and prepare to copy it to the drive when I notice ALL the boot files are missing, in fact every file on the root of C drive is gone.So I make a boot disk from my lap top copy the boot files to the disk and give this a try. Boots fine and seems to run perfect. Copy the boot files to the C drive, reboot numerous times, all good so I go home, leaving him the boot disk and showing him what to do just in case.

Next day same thing, What we seem to have determined is that the files seem to disappear later in the evening. I had him run all the pgms he normally does for a good while, quit the pgm and check C. The files are still there. after a few hours of fooling around he leaves PC on and goes watch TV. Comes back about 11:00pm to turn off PC, checks C drive and they're gone again. He re copies the files, shuts down and goes to bed.Next day PC boots fines before work, after work etc... BUT some time later in the evening it happens again.

Missing Files Or Virus: Data Execution Prevention?

I removed some programs from my computer using the "ad/remove programs" feature in the Control Panel. Since then I've started receiving error messages, primarily when starting or restarting my computer. I'm wondering whether I deleted some OS system files. The error messages I'm getting are:"Data Execution Prevention: To help protect your computer windows has closed this program." Another message says "DrWatson DeBugger...?" I have no idea what this is. I often get some thing like, "there has been a error and this program must shut down."

Virus Attack On Root File: Getting Error Of Missing Files?

Mar 27, 2005

Due to lapse of sense at a particular moment on my part, my DELL Inspiron laptop was not protected when accessing the internet for a download. Windows XP is the operating system. When booting up, error message states that the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I've tried numerous programs and software packages that "guarantee" results but none have accomplished anything except wasting my time and money.

Add And Remove Components

Oct 21, 2007

I tried to add the "peer-to-peer" networking option in the "Add/Remove Windows Components" option of the "add or remove programs" program in the control panel, but it won't let me; first of all, when I scroll down to the "Networking" option under the add/remove windows components, it is checked and yet greyed out.So I click on "details" where it lists the components available to install, and check "on" the peer-to-peer option, but when it goes to install it, it returns with an error of "an extended error has occurred". Gosh, so descriptive.

Reconfigure Add/Remove Components

Oct 14, 2008

When trying to remove Windows Messenger, I made a mess of the Add/Remove Windows Components section of Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Instructions are very confusing, as Windows tells you in order to add/remove the various components, either check or uncheck the box. Not knowing if I should check or uncheck, I tried both, and in the process removed numerous if not all the components.

I managed to get Internet Explorer and Outlook Express back. I honestly do not remember how I did this as I was in a panic state. Meanwhile, I lost MSPaint. And, I'm worried about the other components, like Indexing Service, Networking Services, etc. in order to reinstall components that may or may not be missing, do I simply CHECK the boxes, Accessories and Utilities is NOT checked. I'm assuming that's the reason for why MSPAINT disappeared.

Unable To Add/remove Windows Components

Dec 21, 2007

I uninstaled some windows components and it turns out that I need them and have not been able to reinstall them. I have been trying to reinstall the advanced features in my sounds and audio devices. Since I removed that feature when I play a DVD no my computer the sound will not get very loud. I am having no problem with other videos just DVD's. But I have also tried reinstalling games and other features and they will not install either.
When trying to install I use the Windows Installation CD and the installation seems to go fine. I don't get any error message, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I also tried the Add/Remove Programs feature in the control panel and got the same results.

Create An SP2 CD Combined Components Of Original CD

Sep 15, 2005

I have four legal copies of Windows XP, two Home and two Professional.Whenever I need to reinstall onto a new computer or a repaired system, it is now a two-step process that takes almost three hours:Perform the reinstall,Apply the patch to SP2.Microsoft Support wants $30 + tax/shipping to send me replacement CDs that have SP2 on them, and before I bite that bullet, I am wondering if there is a more creative solution. Is there any way to create an SP2 CD from the combined components of an original CD and the components of the downloaded patch? Any other solutions or paths to take to resolve this? I imagine this has been a source of discussion for some time, although a Google search did not turn up anything, perhaps owing to my uncertainty over which keywords to use.
