What I want to do is make a bootable backup image that will self install without windows in case of an operating system failure where windows is unavailable. I want to image my C drive and make it so I can boot from CDR or DVDR and have it format the drive and reinstall my backup identical to the original. A long time ago I saw this done with Symantec Ghost on a job I was on but have no idea how to accomplish the task myself. I was wondering if there is perhaps a better software out there now for making a total self restoring image of your haed drive such as this.

Jan 14, 2007EASY way to copy my hard drive to a bootable CD? I think the HDD I have now is dying, and I would like to have a hard drive I can just pop in which has all the information I have now. I have heard horror stories about Norton Ghost, so I'm hesitant there. I also bought a product called Drivecopy...BEFORE I learned that it is not compatible with XP Pro. Ghost and Drivecopy are both PowerQuest products. I have been told that if you simply copy one drive to another it will not be bootable because of some hidden/missing files that Windows uses. I have also heard that most products which are SUPPOSED to do what I want will only work on drives the exact same size and will duplicate my smaller partition if I go to a larger drive. There MUST be an easy way, but I'm stumped.

Dec 3, 2006I am trying to create a full HD image of my Dell c800 Laptop using Drive Image 7 (circa 2003) to an USB HD. I have tried twice and received failures about my HD having bad sectors OR locked sectors. I ran check disc with repair and did not find any problems. Re-ran check disc from the boot disc that came with the application and found no problems with the disc. Tried again for a backup and received the same error. I am thinking it is one of the programs I have loaded has a locked sector or one of my processes that loads during boot is the problem?

Once it arrived to the loading screen after the reboot nothing occurred. Nov 28, 2006I need to do a clean install of Windows XP on a system that previously ran Windows 2000. I deleted the partition via the Windows Install/Setup menu, but when the PC boots, it lists Windows 2K as one of the startup/OS options. I need to be able to do an /fdisk on the whole drive and start from scratch. Unfortunately, I only have a basic Windows XP installation CD - and if there's a way to get to a prompt and do it from there, I can't remember. Could anyone direct me to a bootable CD that will allow me to /fdisk and delete and create partitions? I need something quick and fast. I'm not permitted to download or install anything without permission and my boss is out of town until Thursday. He may call in tomorrow (or he may not). So please, don't point me to Bart's PE or anything that requires installing an .ISO burner. I need to be able to do this with the tools that Windows XP, SP 2 native.These are laptops I'm working with and they do not have floppy drives, so I cannot use floppy disks.

I suspect the genuine advantage download will make it not possible but I know its possible to install IE7 without Genuine Advantage installed. Its a lengthy workaround so figure slipstreaming impossible. I have a slipstream SP2 XP cd but it would be really useful if I could get IE7 on there as well. Don't even know if IE7 can be slipstreamed.

Problem is I don't have an actual boot disc, as my original PC started as an OEM, but have since replaced everything, even the Mother Board. I have the key still, but need an OEM windows xp home bootable disc so I can properly format my drive. I've searched and can't find anything online. I'm also restricted to making a cd only, as I'm using my laptop so Microsoft's suggestion of using floppies is not possible for me.
