Login Failed / Catastrophic Failure

Jan 9, 2009

I have installed a new hard drive due to a catastrophic failure. I also purchased a new install CD of XPP sp 2. Upon completion of the NTFS format and OS installation, the final system restart shows the Windows logo then I get the blue screen of death.

The problem is the HD failed. So I put in another HD and reinstalled win XP pro. Everything was fine until this morning. I got up to find it had rebooted in the night and failed to boot up again. I get an error message that says boot failure system security something has failed to initialize due to hardware attatched to your computer is no longer functioning. I've loaded fail safe settings in bios nothing. I thought I'd reinstall windows but once windows starts to boot the keyboard and mouse are no longer recognized. I can't tell it to boot from CD.

User Interface Failure - Logon User Interface Dll Msgina.dll Failed To Load

Dec 15, 2006

Current situation: When Windows XP boots it displays Windows logo, black screen and then a small error window with title "User Interface Failure" and text "The logon user interface dll msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system administrator ..." There is a button to restart the system. Booting causes a loop back to the same state; I cannot get the system to boot to safe mode. Other than the lack of a logon and desktop the rest of the boot process seems to continue OK; I can access network shared drives from another system. Using BartPE I can see that msgina.dll is in C:windowssystem32 as it should be. Unfortunately much of the data I need to access for my work is not on shared drives and cannot be accessed by BartPE so I am in big trouble.
Background: The express version of SpyCatcher was installed a few daus ago. All was OK until I restarted the system and arrived at the current situation. I also have BartPE which I have used to look at the SpyCatcher logs and found entries that msgina.dll was quarantined (along with many other safe items). I believe this is the cause of the problem and not anything else.

Admin Login Versus Profile Login

Nov 29, 2008

What happened is I just installed a new Hard Drive and a fresh windows install (XP Pro with Service pack 3). After all was installed it logged into my account (Me) which was my account with Administrator privileges. I did a series of windows updates now when I turn my computer on it goes straight to the Administrator account and not my account (me). So I have to log off or switch accounts from Admin to Me. I just want it to login to Me all the time. So I am not smart enough to figure it out.

Gets To Login Screen But After Login It Slows Down

Nov 21, 2006

I'm using Win XP sp2 and I usually leave my computer on 24/7. This morning I tried to open a file but it never opened. I went into the task manager to see if its even processing and it was there but the ccapp was taking all the cpu. So i tried to shutdown and restart. After that windows boots up to the login screen just fine but when i click on my account it take a long time to show my wallpaper. I can pull up task manager and the cpu isnt being used. the hdd is only accessed in little bursts. After a while the start menu pops up. any keyboard commands like to bring up win explorer takes a long time and all the commands pop up in a big burp of of command executions. I'm trying to reach system restore but cant. I'm not sure how to get into safemode with this system because just after post when f8 is usually used to bring up the menu the system opens a boot drive selection screen. During the RAM tests during post theres text stating press del to enter bios and f8 to enter boot drive selection so im not sure how to get to safemode now.

PS/2 - USB Mouse Failure

May 10, 2010

This one has got me completely stumped:I am running windows XP, and have not made any hardware changes recently The only recent software install was Kaspersky internet security 2010, over the top of the 2009 productShortly after that install, my PS/2 mouse stopped functioning - the red light on the mouse comes on, but the pointer does not move. I checked with a USB mouse, and with a USB graphics tablet- same story, no response. The USB devices were tried in the main USB slots and in a hub. They both work fine on another PC.I have started in safe mode, and deleted all HID devices. Windows then detects the mouse, but then reports (via device manager) that it cannot detect the hardware.

Network Failure?

Jul 5, 2005

Today I notice that my WinME (ICS host) and WinXP (client) can't communicate(simple peer to peer setup). First clue was when I couldn't send a print job from my ME to the XP where the printer is connected. XP pc reports "network unplugged". A forced "disable" and then an "enable" doesn't help. I also notice that the little lights for the network cards are not lit up. I thought they would normally BE lit up if the computers are on, right? However.. the lights on the network cards/ports on BOTH machines are off. Could both network cards have failed simulateously?

SP3 Installation Repair Failure

Sep 28, 2010

I purchased the Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop about 2 years ago. It shipped with Vista at the time, but I installed XP on the partition Vista was installed on and have been using it happily ever since. There is a common problem as it turns out, after having read through other forums, that used to exist with Dell laptops, including mine and that is that they would come shipped with the Mediadirect button. When pressed, it supposedly boots the laptop to another partition, which would start up a multimedia software that can playback CDs, DVDs and/or other media files on the accessible storage. The critical and serious issue is that once this button is pressed and you try to turn on the laptop normally again (boot into Windows), it would not boot up, producing the Invalid partition table error at boot-up, suggesting that the former process messes up the boot record somehow.

The same thing happened to me before. A quick suggested fix was to press the button again. While it didn't solve the issue, it at least booted in the right partition, but complained about an ntfs sys file not being there. I solved this myself by repairing the existing Win XP Pro SP3 installation via an XP SP2 CD, which reverted back SP3 to SP2 without much hassle, surprisingly, and Windows booted up normally. I just had to manually update the system to SP3 again using Windows update and that was all. Other software like IE and WMP were also reverted, but reinstalled to the latest version manually.

Conversion From FAT To NTFS Failure?

May 21, 2008

the Systemax OEM PC we bought in 2006 had its Windows installation on a FAT32-formatted C: partition by default. I only noticed it this month, and after backing it up, I tried convert.exe based on what every-website-ever agreed on was the right instruction. Since it was running off of the partition it needed to convert, it asked me to run on the next restart, which it did. The process took at least 2 hours, but sometime in between the last time I checked up on it and when it finished, it apparently *undid* all the conversion it was doing, because the C: partition still read as FAT32.

LCD Monitor Gone With Keyboard Failure

Oct 2, 2006

Instructed to avoid using IE, so browsing with Netscape 8.x instead - was exploring my nephew's MySpace site. She said that the monitor began flashing intermittantly (go black for half a second at a time, then come back on). Because she insists on running scripts, I instantly suspected some malware and ran some scans that came up clean (Symantec AV and Windows Defender antispyware). After a reboot, the problem was still there but a bit worse. I tried restoring to progressively older restore points, but that didn't work either. I found, in fact, that after the reboot, my keyboard did not work. In Safe mode, I get no monitor blinking, but the keyboard still won't work.

Standby And Hibernate Failure With PGP 6.x

Looking for work-around solution standby/hibernate failure in WinXP system after installation of PGP 6.x.

Problem is completely described in Microsoft KB

I am presently using PGP 6.5.1 and want to keep it. I'm using it for the PGPdisk features with encrypted
volumes (directories). It works fine in WinXP with both existing PGD volumes that I have (from previous
systems) and it also works fine with newly created PGD volumes. The only problem is that it prevents WinXP from entering Standby modes when I attempt this power down feature in WinXP for my laptop.........

Cant Boot Since Power Failure

Ever since a power failure yesterday, my computer is not booting 100% of the way - it seems to stall at the end after loading desktop etc, can't see anything missing but I am unable to do anything. Nothing opens when clicked on. It works perfectly in Safe Mode with Networking.

I checked Device Manager and found 3 things highlighted:

HID Non-user input Data Filter

HID Non-user input Data Filter in HID section, and

WAN Miniport (IP) in Network Adaptors.

I do not have a wireless network, only a hard-wired one, so not sure what that is about.

System Tray Failure

Mar 27, 2008

My Dell XPS 410, running WinXP, has a problem (or at least an annoyance)which seems to be getting worse. Very often -- maybe even most of the time lately -- half or more of my system tray icons fail to appear, even though the programs are running. It's very inconsistent, sometimes it's fine, at worst only 2 or 3 of the expected dozen or so make it. And the whole startup program-loading is really bogging down.I know that it's software related of course, as all is fine when I boot up to my back-up WinXP OS on another partition. But *where* is the glitch? I scan constantly for viruses, trojans, spyware and all, and also keep the registry clean and def ragged. It would be great if any of you might have some ideas for things I should look for, as any day now I'm going to decide to just bite the bullet and do a clean re-install of Windows. Everything's backed up, of course, but it will take days to re-install all the programs and configure everything again.
