I have setup a second hard drive for data storage only (no OS) and have allocated all availables space under a single extended partition to make future expansion as painless as possible. I have divided the extended
partition into three logical partitons, whose volume labels are now highlighted in blue in My Computer. The same happens to all files and folders that are now stored in these logical partitions.
I have been asked to partition the hard disk in the following ways; the hard disk should be partitioned such a way that, the user profiles need to be a separate partion not in os installed partition say 'C: drive'; but in another partition say user(E: ); for this i figured out that need to automate this process someway in a form of text file, which will be used while installation; please somebody lead/instruct me regarding this; i am just now into system administration; and the OS of systems can be windows XP,2000,2003,98

Now, I had winxp pro installed on WD, C: and extra partition F:.
I had a copy of C: from the WD on the Maxtor, along with partitions G:H:I:J:. All worked fine for a while.
I tried installing Win server 2003 on WD F: partition. It ran fine.
Now, I deleted server 2003 partition. To make a long story short, I wiped all drives and partitions. Even with using fdisk, maxblast, wipeout, etc. C: drive is still split into logical 1 and logical 2,So my 80 g is showing as roughly 20 and 60 .
Also I have an Emachines w2785, 1.73 ghz amd, 512 ram, HAD xp pro.
the titles under my desk top icons are highlighted in blue. what would be the cause of that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had my computer since Christmas of last year. It's a pretty nice rig, lots of nice stuff in it. I'll start out with the first problem I've had with it. My DVD drive: it just disappears. I'll be running fine one minute, then the next my computer will freeze for a few seconds, then it's fine, then it'll freeze again, then it's fine. Then I take a look at my list of drives, and my DVD drive isn't on the list. I can still see my two hard drives, but not my DVD drive. This wasn't a HUGE issue to me; I figured I would just have to deal with not being able to install games or watch movies on my computer.So then, after trying to troubleshoot this issue for quite some time, I decide to completely power off my PC, including turning it off with the switch in the back. After waiting a few minutes, I flip the switch, and I hear the sound of something sparking and frying. "That's odd," I think to myself, but try to turn my computer on anyway. No response. I mash the power button but it just won't turn on. Turns out my power supply was fried. "Alright," I said. "I'll just go upgrade." But my dad disagreed and simply purchased one that was roughly equivalent to the one I currently had. Oh well, it's served me fine so far.
Recently, my problems have been getting worse. We tried reinstalling Windows, thinking that might fix the DVD drive. My dad hands me this "custom" CD with Windows and SP2 installed, and since he's likely to start screaming and spitting if I don't do his bidding, I installed with this CD. I am not sure if this was a mistake or not, but I'm thinking it was.Recently my computer has been locking and freezing at random intervals, usually while I'm playing World of Warcraft, though it also has happened at least twice while I'm just playing around on the computer, browsing the internet, ETC. The other day I was playing WoW and a bluescreen popped up. Here's the technical information, or whatever it is.
Im not sure what i deleted but i deleted a partition or a logical drive while reinstalling windows XP now my second HDD or Partition or Logical Drive is not showing. & when i go to DIsk mangment it does not diplay an unallocated space, RAW drive or unformatted drive its just the C: drive laying there.Is there any chance of recovering the drive but not the files the D drive only.

View 14 Replies View RelatedProblem: Now with the PC running and precious data growing ever larger my raid0 is vunerable to failure. Therefore I wanted to remove the old drive and insert a new drive to back up the raid0. When I removed the old drive windows wouldn't boot. After reinserting the old drive I have discovered the boot.ini file is on this other drive along with a few windows hidden files. I didn't realise this would happen -noob- and therefore I'm not sure if I can just repartition the small number of files and move them onto the main Raid0 drives. Would this mess up windows booting? The reason I want to move these files is it's an old drive and if it dies windows won't boot.

I have two computers running WinXP; the others run Win2K. When I attempt to see the file system in Explorer of one of the WinXP machines by clicking on "Computers Near Me"/Computer Name, it takes about a minute for the list of logical hard disks to appear. This is true no matter which of the other computers this one is accessed from. No other computer behaves like this. When I click on another computer name in Explorer, the list of hard disks appears almost instantaneously. Moreover, only one installation of WinXP behaves like this -- the one with a clean install of WinXP; the WinXP installation that is an upgrade of Win2K displays its logical hard disks very quickly. Once the list of logical disks appears, clicking on one entry produces a list of the folders in the root directory almost instantaneously.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
