Removing Vista From Dual Boot And Keep XP?
Jan 15, 2009A couple days ago, I was running Vista and XP on two seperate hard drives on my desktop. I have since deicded to use the Vista hard drive for data storage and have removed it from my desktop.However,whenever I boot up my desktop, my computer still goes to the black windows uploader screen and askes me to choose and "Earlier version of windows" (the XP) or my non-existant Vista.

I am performing this in a Compaq SR5310F Desktop computer that originally came with Vista Home Premium:Within Vista, I opened the Disk Management utility. I then shrunk the volume and left myself with exactly 40GB of unallocated space for my XP installation. I then booted from my XP Pro cd, selected that unallocated space, formatted it using NTFS, then installed XP. It copied all the files fine, but when it reboots to launch the GUI of the installation, I get a message saying, "Error loading operating system"

Jan 1, 2008I have a new laptop that came with Windows Vista. I have been trying to load it with Windows XP because Windows Vista didnt work. I am pretty sure a format and clean install will wreck my warranty, hence the dual boot. So far, I have been able to partition and install XP SP-2 to a partition. I've booted into XP fine but my Vista partition is not available. I think that the partition table or MBR has been corrupted.
So to repair this, what I did was boot up from the Vista recovery DVD and run the 'startup repair' option to reload the bootloader for Vista and thus, enable dual booting. When I rebooted I got a black screen saying 'Invalid Partition Table' or something to this effect. I tried repairing the MBR and so on and so forth from the console on the recovery DVD but this proved to be pretty much totally fruitless. So I went through and did an install of Windows XP once again, to my other drive partition I had created. So I am basically where I started.
Service Pack 3 - Removing "download"?
Aug 30, 2008My Windows Update was set to download updates, and then notify me to install. Well, I have Windows Service Pack 3 "downloaded," but not installed, yet. And whenever I shut down my XP Professional system it asks me whether I want to install it. I have decided that I want to wait a month or so before installing it, so how do I remove it from my system. By the way, I went ahead a changed the setting at the Windows Update site so it now notifies me of any updates, but it does not download it to my system....but, as I said above, what I want to do is get rid of the download on my system

Sep 17, 2009I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.

Dec 7, 2007Hi All. My problem is this. I have a legal copy of XP Pro (OEM) installed on this computer. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. Anyway tell me what you think and thanks.

Repair Xp Without Using System Repair
Nov 30, 2008I recently had a bad hard drive (It need the windows xp cd to boot) and saw that the problem was bad blocks. I decide to buy a new hard drive and use ghost to clone it. But, now i have the same problem with the new hard drive. After a while, i realize that obviously, if the disk was cloned, ONLY the information that can be copied was transfered to the other one.In conclusion, how can I resolve this issue without using system repair. the problem is that once i use this tool and then IE won't work. at last I had to format the drive.

I was having trouble with freezing and a whole lot of pop ups, I started a virus scan with anti vir and it deleted a whole bunch of trojan horses, but didn't find any viruses. I installed the free version of AdAware and every time I try to run a scan, it starts ok but after a few minitues it has found about 20 critical objects when it just turns off by itself. I have restarted it several times and it does the same thing. I have downloaded spyware doctor and spybot, but every time I try to install them, it tells me that a dll or some other thing like a scripter cannot install. Can someone tell me why AdAware is quiting by itself and why spybot and spyware doctor cannot be installed.
