testing MS's beta of Windows Onecare I installed it about 5 days ago and first impressions have been very favorable. It includes a firewall, anti-virus app, backup & restore feature, scheduled tune-up (defrag, etc) automatic updates. Nice for a beta software, no glitches yet and I have tested the backup/restore feature using dvd-rw media. The firewall is inbound / outbound detection unlike XP's built-in. You do have to disable / remove any existing firewall / anti-virus before installation. This might be a subscription service after beta, but may well be worth it, especially for new / in-experienced PC users. But anyone can benefit from the many features, built-in backup to CD / DVD
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed IE 7 beta 2 this morning and afterward I went to Help Center to check my restore points. When I click on the "Undo changes to your computer with SYSTEM RESTORE", on the right-hand side of Help Center nothing happens.I can get at my restore points using "Performance and Maintenance" in the left side of the Help Center and using the Restore Wizard. They look valid.I can also create a new restore point from here.
I have a very clean system and do manual checkpoints almost daily. I resized the restore points cache; turned restore off and on and booted in safe mode only to get the same results.By the way, I have had no problems with IE 7 or any other programs since installing IE 7.
Anyone tried this OneCare Live beta i want to use it now

I was a SP2 beta tester(wondering if you were as well?) and didn't upgrade to the official RTM version. My own personal opinion is that the license for the beta timed out and is now throwing a hissy.I can get the comp to boot up into safe mode just fine (which is why I am positive it's not hardware related) so auto update either dl'd something last night and it's conflicting or it's the sp2 beta license problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using MS Anti-Spyware Beta 1 for several weeks. Recently, when trying to update, the program says it downloads and installs updates but when I check for future updates the same one supposedly already downloaded and installed shows up again. For example, I got to definitions 5729, but 5733 was but wasn't installed several times; and then it was 5735 the same. So I uninstalled the program and downloaded and reinstalled it. Now I have definitions 5725 and have tried without success to download and install 5735 several times. Anyone got any ideas what the problem might be? I also have Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Bazooka, and Spyware Blaster.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to install Internet Explorer 7 beta 2, and it does not work. So I did what they said in troubleshooting (use regmon to find a key that says "access denied" So I did that and found that HKCR/mailto is the problem. So I go into the registry and when I click on it I get an a message saying there was an error opening the key. I try change the permissions, and again I get an error message. Then I even try to delete it (I have a copy from another system to install) and again I get an error message. What can I do to fix this problem?
View 14 Replies View RelatedLast week I posted a question to this forum regarding the trouble I was having uninstalling Explorer Beta 2 (you can't install Beta 3 until you UNINSTALL beta 2). I got some very good suggestions -- system restore, trying REinstalling beta 2, etc. but none of them worked. Beta 2 won't reinstall unless you uninstall, restoring back to earlier times resurrected other demons and glitches I had solved, etc. What I believed happened is part of my overzealous file maintenance. I usually delete all those windows update Uninstall files that clutter up the Windows directory. Who knew that one of them was probably the uninstall file for Explorer Beta 2?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running the public beta 2 of Windows Vista x86 (32-bit version) on my PC--dual-booting with Windows XP SP2-- and I can't get my blasted Internet to work with it. Unfortunately, I haven't any way of running ethernet cable from my PC to the router--and so I need my wireless to work. The adapter is USB--a D-Link DWL-G120 wuireless card. It works fine as I'm using it now in XP SP2. My PC specs are listed in my sig.Anyone know of a driver that will work or any way to make this thing work with the Vista Beta 2 x86 build (public release)? I don't care if it only lets me use 802.11b--I just want a frikin driver that will allow me to test Vista's IE7 and such.
View 11 Replies View RelatedIf you decide to uninstall IE 8 Beta 1 and revert back to IE 7, you will likely discover that its entry in the Add/Remove Programs list does not offer an uninstall option, especially if you installed the XP SP3 upgrade afterwards.
This is how to uninstall it:
Navigate to the C:WINDOWSIE8SPUNINST folder and then open it to expose its list of files.
Double-click the SPUNINST.EXE file to start the uninstall process.
Ignore the warning that uninstalling it may cause some of your installed programs not to work.
Restart your computer when prompted to.
When you start IE 7 for the first time, follow the directions to select your personal settings.
Run a scan at the Windows Updates site.
I decided to Delete IE8 Beta yesterday but after it caused probs for my XP operating system I looked up on here how to revert back to IE7 (I don't have SP3 DL'd so it seemed like an easy fix). But now everytime I try to open IE it starts to load and then just disapears (No error message or anything) I ran ad-aware and AVG and found nothing so I don't think its a malware problem. But I went ahead and ran HJT in case you guys can tell something by looking at it. I think I royally messed up this time & I just hope someone can help me out I'm using Mozilla right now but hate that I cannot copy/paste so I really need IE back.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm in a bit of a pickle, I was installing some beta drivers from nvidia on my gaming desktop just for fun, but when I restarted the computer can't run for more then 3 minutes until it crashes, so I need to go back and reverse the drivers i installed or get rid of them. The dilemma here is that I'm not exactly sure what I need to do, nor can I BOOT INTO SAFE MODE, which has been an issue for me for about a year now. Whenever I begin to login in safe mode the computer abruptly restarts before it even reaches the desktop

View 6 Replies View RelatedBack when I first installed x64 many months ago, I apparently installed the VIA USB 2.0 driver, before I knew that wasn't required on this OS. Looking for the cause of another problem, while looking through the Event Manager, I found a couple of system errors that turned out to be USB filters that the system was blocking. I didn't even remember installing the driver, and when I check in Add/Remove Programs, it's not listed. I decided to simply delete the filters and the USB driver folder. However, after rebooting, I wasn't able to use my mouse, so I couldn't restore the driver from the Recycle Bin. I ended up having to do a System Restore, which set things as they were. Still, I'm looking for a way to remove this that won't cause problems. The only thing that I can think of is to try a repair installation of the OS, but I'm unsure that would do this either. I'm guessing that the VIA driver fouled up the native USB on the system, and this is the root cause of some mouse problems that I have been trying to fix for a long time.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWe had pcguard as the defences provided by blueyonder, our broadband provide,r for about a year and it worked very well. They then announced a new version and when I downloaded it, the windows were too small for the screens behind them and the procedure was unusable. I asked blueyonder for help but ended up with a frozen pc. I managed to restart it myself and then, tried to uninstall the new pcguard but it won't go away. There is a possibility to instal a new version of the pcguard, but it will not install because the former version will not go. The computer has been behaving strangely since. e.g. :
1] Saying it has to configure HP1Z423 for some things like email or internet, which it did not do before.
2] Starting up in something which looks a bit like safe mode screen, but when enter is pressed, it starts up normally.
Desktop file folders (links from My Documents) suddenly appeared with *.lnk extensions. I have hidden known file extensions but these remain. How can I hide them?

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people that did not update your computer in time. No problem, just follow the instructions below to remove the worm from your system. Some users that are infected with the worm have a hard time updating and removing the worm because the system automatically pops up a message informing the user that the machine is going to shut down in 60 seconds. To stop your machine from shutting down one this message is displayed, simply go to the start menu and select run. Then type shutdown -a in the text box and click the OK button. This will stop the machine from shutting down. Now the first step is to apply the security patch to your system. We will remove the worm in step three but first it is important to update your system to make it secure. To update your system, click the link below for your operating system and download the file to your computer.
Windows XP Users - Click Here - Windows 2000 Users - Click Here - Windows NT Users - Click Here - Other Versions of this patch - Click HereNow that you have the patch downloaded to your computer, simply run the file from the location that you saved it at. Follow the on screen directions and keep clicking next. Now that the security hole in your system is fixed, it is time to remove the worm. To remove the worm, just download a special program that Symantec developed by clicking here. Once you have downloaded the program, run it and click the start button to start the search for the worm in your system. When it finds traces of the worm, allow the program to delete the files to rid your system of the worm. That's it. Now you should have a worm free system.
I have purchased an old computer in order to use the case for testing various spare items of hardware. On booting up it goes to an NT Work Station which is password protected. Now I need to get rid of that Workstation as it is of no interest to me, but don't know how to get around the password in order to boot up from a CD ROM and install my own copy of Windows XP Home Edition.
