View 1 RepliesI have a Compac pc that had win 98. I installed winxp on it. I now need to clean it out as the hard drive is almost full. All the original programs, etc that are on it are not in the add/remove programs so I can't uninstall them from there. I need to know the best way to clean this machine up.

Avast and Spybot seem to have done the trick... or... have they? The laptop is still snoozing and crashing everytime I open a browser. I don't know what to do.

Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

View 1 Replies View Relatedif someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. There's over 50GB free and ive been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i don't have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. I've noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had a 60G external hard drive that has worked flawlessly for 2 years with both my desktop computer running Win98SE, and my newer laptop with Windows XP. This external drive was formatted with FAT 32 and NO PARTITIONS for all 60G. Because I have a Lot of music files and digital pictures, I have filled up the 60G drive, so bought an IOGear 160G external drive. This drive arrived partitioned into 6 partitions, of 20-32G sizes. This is completely wrong for how I want to use the drive. All my mp3 programs requires the library to be all in one volume, so I need 60-80G all in one volume just for music. IOGear support says that Windows XP does not allow volumes any larger than 60G in FAT 32. (This seems crazy since my older drive is all one volume and is FAT 32.
View 6 Replies View RelatedUnfortunatly, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, everything, my important stuff is being kept being kept. The message I get is "Access is denied"
When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for that folder I see that my SID Is not there. When I try and add it (my user ID) it validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. When I try and copy a file from my new windows drive to the original I get the message Drive is write protected
Try to defrag it from new windows - same message
Try to repair it from new windows - same message
Can anyone tell me where I could find this media write protect switch and where to change it. Windows XP, NTFS all drives, SCSI
A friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems- I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one. Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work. Am I missing something? Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this? I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.
In the last few days, I installed a game I download from Downloads.com.During installation, this product installed SecuRom's copy-protection files to my C:Documents and Settings<User>Application Data folder, creating a folder there (SecuRomData). After uninstalling any downloaded games, and during a routine
inspection of the <User>Application, I noticed the SecuRom folder.Since I have never had any such folder after doing a fresh install of XP, I began to wonder what this was. So I attempted to delete the folder, after using JV16 powertools to search the Registry for any SecuRom entries, and removing them.
