I have selected to make a folder a Hidden Folder on a partition of mine. To access the folder I type in the directory in Windows Explorer. However, this location then shows up in the Address Bar of Internet Explorer. How do I prevent the Address Bar of IE from displaying the folder location?

The hidden share is still enabled on the other machine. I go to explorer and type in \PCnamec:$ and I get a message saying that I need to check my spelling. The name is correct, so how should I enter in the location in the address bar?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running xp pro. I can not get an internet connection through my ethernet card. When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.

My toolbar has also reverted to what looks like an older version. I run on xp and I have internet explorer 7. I have run virus scans and stuff already. I have also done some research, but most explanations for my problem are full of techno-lingo. However, I have tried running ipconfig but that hasn't worked. If anyone could offer some step by step instructions, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not that good with computers but I know some stuff. Oh yeah my connection is wired (however you say 'not wireless').
View 7 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Pro Temporary files, which are usually created in my local temp folder (C:/Documents and Settings/my files/Local Settings/Temp) have suddenly moved location to WINDOWS/Temp. Nothing is created in any users' temp folders, all temp files are now dumped into the WINDOWS/Temp folder.
At the same time, Carbonite stopped working, and I now get error messages that Carbonites Secure Backup Communications Service has failed. Of course, these two may not be related, and Carbonite support are helping me to sort out the problem with their program - but it may be a clue? The only other changes made in the same period this problem with the Temp folder happened was an automatic upgrade of Thunderbird and an upgrade of Adobe Flash Player. Everything else seems to be functioning correctly on my computer. Has anyone an explanation as to why this happened and does it matter?
Is it better to have the MyDocuments folder outside the local C: drive or to use the default MyDocuments folder that is a subfolder to the local C: drive? Why? I have been using a MyDocuments folder that is at the same level as MyComputer in the directory tree, because I was told that there is a limitation to the size of the MyDocuments folder. However, it also was mentioned that the size limitation does not exist with WinXPpro.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to speed things up for my brother who has dialup Internet. He's rebuilding his PC with his XP CD which is SP1. I have a copy of SP2 in a folder on my PC so I figured I'd just burn it to CD for him. The problem is, my Cd burner reports an error when it tries to burn this. It burns other folders just fine, but reports an error (media error-but on several different disks from the same package that works fine burning other folders) when trying to burn the SP2 folder. (I can copy the folder to a different location & the same problem occurs when burning from the different location-so I don't think it's a corrupted file/folder although I wouldn't want to be too dogmatic on that. It could be a type of corruption that Explorer handles OK but the CD burner (Sonic/Roxio CD Creator, version 10 IIRC) doesn't.) My PC is 2.8GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD with plenty of free space. WinXP, SP2 running AVG Internet Security. Hmmm-haven't tried it with AV turned off, think that might make a difference?

Thankyou for the help.But still have the issue of not being able to change the "FOLDER OPTIONS"/ "VIEW"/ "HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS" selection has both "DO NOT SHOW---" and "SHOW HIDDEN-" selected. If I select either one it will stay only as long as I do not close the Folder Options box. As soon as it is closed it will again default back to both hide and show.I cannot find any threads with this issue except the mention in the one thread about "INFOSTEALER" that I used to get me this far. What did I miss?

I'm trying to unhide this folder and KEEP it unhidden because the backup software we are using cannot see hidden files. I go to properties, uncheck hide. It asks me if I want to unhide just the folder or all files and subfolders, I do all files and sub folders. No problem.Then, when I reboot, I go to check it, and it's hidden again.Is there any way to stop Windows from automatically hiding it on restart?

After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.
Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article
I am using Windows XP Home edition. How do you delete an address from the list of automatic webb address list in the Address box? I tried highlighting it and entering delete but it doesn't get deleted.
