let me start by saying I have had a horrible time with wireless networks for my PC. I have a PC downstairs and a PC upstairs (they are about 10 feet apart through the floor). The PC downstairs is connected to the router/modem. I recently bought a new gateway adapter (Realtek RTL8185). I installed it and everything was fine. Now my problem is every 2 minutes it disconnects, but then reconnects right back (this is bad news for online gaming). The speed is okay, but I have tried reinstalling and everything. It works fine after a restart, but then it starts to disconnect/reconnect, and then just stop all together.

Any idea what causes mapped network drives to appear as 'Disconnected.Network Drive' in 'my computer?' This happens even when a system is powered up with the networked system already online (supposed to reconnect on startup).Double-clicking the drive letter in 'my computer' accesses the drive and changes status to 'Network Drive.' Unfortunately, accessing by another app gets the 'disconnected' status. There must be a registry patch or option for this

I have 3 drives mapped on a WinXP Media Center Edition machine, which always show up as Disconnected Network Drive with every boot. I can access them if i double click them, and then they are marked as connected. This is a problem, however, because when i load up Media Center, I have these 3 drives mapped under My Video, and they won't display. What I am doing now, is remoting into the system every time I boot it, opening each mapped drive, and then launching Media Center. But, this is a pain in the ***, because I jsut want to boot up and go with the remote control.

I am hoping somebody on here will be able to help me. I just installed a wireless router so the kids could have the Internet on their computer. I went into the setup and set times to limit how late they could be on. When the time comes that they should be shut off the router disconnects them and then reconnects them shortly thereafter. I have it set to shut off at 9:00 p.m. and turned back on at 8:00 a.m.. I am using a Linksys systems router.

Every now and then when i try to run a program that is on one of my mapped drives a window pops up saying the mapped drive doesn't exist. I go into my computer and sure enough all my mapped drives show disconnected but when I try to open them they open just fine and I can see all the files on the mapped drive. What would cause this?

When the storm died down I booted the computer up and it made a series of "ca-click, ca-click" (that's pretty much exactly what it sounded like, too) noises. It ran slowly, but it managed to boot up. I ran all my programs normally, including logging into World of Warcraft. I got disconnect from the server (DSL hiccup, I think) and went to log back in. There's a bug in the game that sometimes causes computers to freeze on re-logging automatically into an instance. I could still hear ventrilo, but the monitor was frozen.
I told people I'd brb and pressed the power button. It rebooted and this time it made a LOT more clicking noises and paused at a black screen after the dell logo went away. After a few minutes it told me that one of my sys.dll files was missing and I needed to put in the windows disc and repair. Every time I subsequently restarted, a different file was supposedly missing. Sometimes it was NSFW and sometimes it was something else.

I'm running remote desktop on Windows XP which ran fine for awhile. Now I get this error. "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator." The Microsoft knowledge base had this to say
"Cause: The licensing protocol handles the communication of licensing information between your computer and the remote computer. If there is an error in the licensing protocol, your computer cannot be connected to the remote computer. Solution: Try connecting to the remote computer again. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the server administrator"
I'm the server admin, and I can't figure this out. Please help! Where do I check to see if my license has expired? It's such a strange problem because I can connect to other servers in the domain, just not terminal servers.

It came to can not read drive F. Options were fail, abort or retry. Nothing worked. so she called the the computer shop and they said it was because of the raid thing when. I've had this computer working for quite a while, at least a year, and I reinstalled XP a few days ago to rid the computer of spyware, etc. It installed with no errors, and worked fine for a few days after the reinstall. Last night I shut it down, started it back up this morning and it hangs on the Windows XP loading screen, the green bar keeps going through but it never boots. The same thing happens when I boot with the last good configuration that worked. When I boot in safe mode it hangs while it loads the safe mode files, the last one is Mup.exe, Mup.dll, or something that starts with Mup. MemTest86 shows no errors, so I guess its not the memory, and I don't know why anything would just stop working. I didn't install any new hardware, software, or drivers right before I shutdown last night. Here are my computer specs: Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard. Athlon 64 3200+ CPU. 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 Kingston Value RAM (Non-ECC). 250GB SATA Hard Drive (It's either Maxtor or Seagate, if you really need to know which I can check).ATI X800XT Video Card. Windows XP with the SP1 CD, but I downloaded and installed SP2 and it was running fine with SP2 for a few days.

We have a Windows 2000 Server (PDC) and a handful of workstations.I've been searching for a reliable, easy-to-use, solution for backing up our data. Most solutions that seem to fit the bill are designed for the large enterprises - something I cannot justify in terms of cost vs ROI.I've tried using Microsoft's backup but it fails every now and then to complete the backup and the logs are empty.Does anyone have suggestions for products to look at that allow me to:
* Schedule a backup of the server's data to a secondary machine on the domain. I'm happy to have workstations push data to the server for backup if required.
* Optionally backup the Operating System drive that would allow for quick recovery in the event of a total hard disk failure. In the past I've had to rebuild the server and then mess around with the workstations due to the accounts becoming invalid (no experience and I didn't know about this forum)
* Our server has RAID 1 - Ghost does not support RAID; I found out the hard way !!

5 - Boot to Ubuntu Server
6 - Create System Backups for my Laptop (6.1), old PC (6.2) and for this new PC (6.3).

In 2001 I purchased a Compact Presario with Windows XP Home Edition. I have slow dialup with MSN 9 as my browser and provider.Over the last few months, my PC has developed the following problems. They seem to have gotten worse when I was forced to upgrade from MSN 6 to MSN 9 last August.
1. About 70% of the time after signing in, I get a dialogue box that reads " Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." I eventually log on after an attempt or two.
2. Pages sometimes freeze for up to 15-20 minutes before a new page finally opens up.
3. About once a week, I get the smaller bubble that reads that I am running low on virtual memory.
4. Pages do not usually close when clicking on the "X" in the left corner.
I recently signed into www.double my speed.com for a scan. The scan detected 837 errors of various sorts.I spent nearly three hours speaking to one of their techs from India who took over my computer ostensibly to diagnose the problem. He eventually determined that the $40 annual "fix it" option would not work because I have " very, very bad things" on my computer that needed my immediate attention. He showed me the page with all my errors, and took me to google which explains them. He said I was a victim of hacking. He took me to a page where I was going to get immediate help. Of course, all this help was going to cost $250 for the package. I hung up and disconnected.I am very un savvy when it comes to computers, but I seriously doubt I need to spend $250 to take care of these problems.I would greatly appreciate the simplest and/or least expensive way to get rid of these problems.I should add that my Norton anti-virus only detects low risk tracking cookies every week, and nothing else.I performed a sweep of these cookies today and got rid of them , but this did not speed things up or eliminate errors.

I have a question about Microsoft Configuration. First off, it's not there. I go to start > run > msconfig and get this: Quote: Windows cannot find Microsoft Configuration. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I search for it and I find it, but run won't find it.I don't really want to have to put a shortcut to it on the desktop because my friends are idiots.

At approx. 6:30 pm yesterday, I realized suddenly, my system had become infected with something ... I now once again keep getting those "Only the Best" darn things popping up. (I've been through this before a year ago. it was much worse then had to completely overhaul the entire hard drive)Well, anyhow, what I tried to do this time is simply creat a restore point and revert back to that. Surprisingly, that did not eradicate the presence of this pop-up thing; I'm sure the restore point predates the pop-up reappearance.
