View 5 Replies View Relatedi'm running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 Edition, with all the latest updates, all my drivers are up to date but when I preform general tasks such as web browsing my computer lags badly. It takes forever to log into Windows and takes even longer to load Firefox up. Sometimes I get the (Not Responding) appear in the title bar, and the whole computer will lock up only to suddenly come back to life in a minute or so.It's been doing this about a month after I got it, but when Windows is first installed after a format it runs as smooth as a whistle then after a hour or so it starts to lag. I doubt its the RAM as im running 1GB's worth and the computer isnt that old I only got it brand new last year.

View 7 Replies View Relatedslowness, stalls and really choppy video and audio everywhere on my computer. even the start-up windows chime is all warbly and choppy. i have problems with video stored on my hd, played from a dvd, as well as video online on Internet and my smugmug page. i have not noticed anything in particular taking up a lot of memory in the task manager, but there are an awful lot of programs in there and some duplicates of system processes
here is what i have tried
-removed all unused programs, files
-de-fragged hd
-ran disk cleanup
-removed unneeded programs from start-up process
-ran windows, qt, media player, java and flash updates
-ran virus scanner and registry cleaner
here is what i am working with:
-toshiba tecra a6 laptop, always plugged in to ac power
-windows xp sp2
-intel cpu t1300 @ 1.66ghz
-504 mb ram
-23 gb free space of a 52gb hd
-minimal programs - mostly office 2007, outlook express, nero and adobe plus some tiny insignificant ones like my harmony remote program
-nortons 360 (though i have removed this and still have the problem)
i am pretty comfortable working my way around advanced settings on my laptop and know enough to know what i should not change without help.
I have an Acer Aspire 5100, which I bought last August. It runs Windows XP Media Edition.About 2 months ago, I had some major problems with the laptop. The screen went crazy -- blue and white lines everywhere. I had to unplug and take out the battery to turn the computer off. After that, it would not boot up. The power light would come on, and I could hear the hard drive start up, but the screen would remain black and nothing else would occur.I sent the laptop in for repair. They replaced the mother board. I did not have any further problems and everything ran super smooth.Until about 3 days ago, when, quite suddenly, it started to act funky. I first noticed it when I tried to listen to music or play any kind of video. The video was and continues to be slightly sluggish, and in both audio and video, there is a noticeable static-like sound, especially when I try to scroll on a page ... or blink at it, really. I also got one blue screen. Mmm, those are fun (also my first with this computer). It continued to hate me after the blue screen, so I rebooted again. Which took forever. "Windows is shutting down." would stare at me, for seemingly an eternity. I knew when I got the machine that it had a fairly slow shut down and boot up, but this was ridiculous. Boot up, of course, wasn't any better.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a bit of a last resort. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a fairly old computer from around 2006 (3.2ghz, upgraded to 4gb RAM etc.) I use a Belkin 802.11g wireless card, connecting to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. A few months ago, I started having odd connection issues. Nothing new was installed/ uninstalled. Previously, the last thing uninstalled was a Steam version of M&Mark Messiah, but that was about a week previous. What would happen is that whilst browsing the internet (Chrome) the browser would not connect, saying 'Resolving Host'. When this was happening, no other browser would work (they'd just be 'loading'). Other programs would work (so, League of Legends would work except for the 'browser' bits such as news, Google Talk would work). I would have full signal, packets being sent, and I could always connect to the router config utility. I looked around, read a load of stuff about DNS problems, tried the fixes, with no luck. Eventually I stumbled across someone who recommended I turn off UPnP function of my router. I did so, and things miraculously worked. No problems at all.
Until last week. Despite the UPnP function being off, and despite not changing anything (to my knowledge) my internet has gone crazy again. It's worse than before. Posting this was an exercise in frustration - more 'resolving host' problems. Interestingly, the problem has spread to other programs - AdAware can't connect to the server and thus can't run, apparently; other scanners show no malware/spyware. Connecting to League of Legends is much slower - although once I am in the game, it runs entirely properly - as low a ping as ever. I've searched around and entirely failed to find a solution that works. On Chrome I disabled DNS-pre fetching, and that seemed to help, for about 2 minutes. Then back to normal.I have had ZoneAlarm installed in the past, and have Avast! running. I recently reinstalled ZA after the problems restarted to see if that would change anything, but nothing so far.
I downloaded truecrypt and created a file-hosted container and mounted it in truecrypt.
1) What exactly is "mounted" and "unmounted" mean? I mean I know I can't move files into the drive unless its mounted, but is there something wrong with having it mounted all the time. Is there a time when its supposed to unmounted?
2) I am considering encryption the entire windows xp including boot partition. Is this a good idea or is there a significant decrease in performance. Speed is a concern for me. Also, will this make it difficult for me to install ubuntu later on using dual boot (grub loader)?
Here is my current setup: 160GB 7200rpm hard drive 8mb buffer
Current Partitions:
C: (100GB, NTFS, windows xp pro)
D: (60GB, NTFS, data storage)
K: (4GB, file-hosted container, with container being in the C: drive) (this 4GB is part of the 100GB of C).................
For some reason there are a couple of tabs missing from the "Folder Options" window...(The General & View tabs are missing.)Anyways, for the longest time I've been trying to find a fix for this.. ive tried numerous registry tweaks and such, but to no avail.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble with pages not loading when I'm on the internet using Netzero and Internet Explorer. It seems to be secure pages mostly (every time I want to order something online, or when I go to a company's application center and try to apply for a job.I am on my second printer (HP 3740). Granted, it's not top of the line, but I just bought it because my old one was broken (I thought) and now it is starting to have the same problems as the last one, and the problems started about a week after I bought it. It started with the printing getting faded, like the cartridge was running out of ink, then it went through the motions of printing but no ink was on the paper. Next it will stop moving, even though the power light comes on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.
First off I use windows XP with the latest service pack. I'm using the onboard sound card on my motherboard Asus striker II extreme.
The volume of my flash player (I first noticed it when trying to view a video on Hulu) but other flash embedded videos won't play sound either. I thought this was a flash problem, and tried the usual fixes uninstalling reinstalling, running the update utility and removing and reinstalling the plugin. Also it likely isn't a browser issue as embedded videos didn't play on either Firefox or Opera.
After restarting my computer after a few uninstalls I noticed my startup music wasn't playing as well. I'm thinking that it might be some registry error as it seems like the music is very quiet instead of muted, and all of the volume levels in the Sounds and Audio Device Properties menu are at the correct levels, and my other media players play music and movies just fine.
I've browsed the forums and haven't seen anyone with a similar problem or a fix, so any help would be greatly apprciated.
Computer is running a lot slower these days which i suspect is because of some virus or other.
have used the various software to try cleaning it up but does not really help.
The thing is i am planning to buy a new pc and intend to give this one to a family member, so i want to clean all the crap from it. I have visited the odd porn site or two so really want to clean it properly
Is formatting the drive the best way to clean this up?
How do I clean up my HD to free up more space? Where do I look?

I moved a hd (with xp, programs, settings, etc) from my old pc to a new one that already has xp pro. This old hd is going to be used for archiving only, but it has a lot of files, xp os and settings that I want to get rid off.
How to accomplish it? Cleaning the whole stuff isn't the case as some files/programs will be kept as is.
I want to ask how I am suppose to blow the inside components of my pc using compressed air, because wouldn't the dust go in the pc even more when I blow it? How am I suppose to blow it out? Blow behind the dust so the air would
repel and blow it out?
Is this a good method for ESD precautions (without a gounding strap):
- Not working on a carpet
- Not wearing footwear
- Working on a wooden table
- Touch the back of the computer before opening it
- Touch the Metal Case of the Power Supply (inside) frequently while the
computer is open
- Not moving on the floor too much

View 2 Replies View RelatedCleaning a compact disk... What is the proper way of doing so? What kind of cloth should I use and which way do I rub? Are you supposed to rub in circles or do you go from the inside ring to the outer edge?
And what does "against the tracks" mean?
It has really old hardware with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1. There is a bunch of software that I don't want. I tried uninstalling the programs from Add or Remove Programs, but I can't.

I've been to rid my computer (Windows XP) of spyware and such, uneeded stuff running, as I can only get dial up and it's slow enough at best! If I can figure out how to get this Hijack This log attached, I would sure appreciate it if someone could look at it and what maybe should'nt be there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have uninstalled several programs from my computer.
I was wondering if it is safe to delete the system file in the Registry? or if something bad would happen?
I have several registry cleaning tools on my PC like registry mechanic,WinASO registry Optimizer and those included in my programs ASMW PC-Optimizer,Tune-up utilities and WinTools.net Professional. One thing I am puzzled is that all the registry cleaning tools have found certain problems when I run one after another.Once i completed my registry scan using all above tools and fix all problems,I can't understand why a number of registry problems still exist the next day.I did not carry out any important task other than just spend the most 1 hr of web surfing.
Recommend a more powerful registry cleaning tool to curb such problem.
How to remove viruses from my pc please?
View 10 Replies View RelatedThe newest version of hijack this w/instructions? And whatever else I need in order for someone on here to look at my system and tell me what needs to be cleaned off?
I am asking b/c when my virus scanner did is regular scanning it said it found to trojans or malware? I don't know if I have opened something that I should not have...not knowing or if someone has used my computer and opened something.
When I open internet explorer.it says my homepage is about blank.it will not let me change it back to the regular homepage.
