TrueCrypt / General Encryption - Mounted And Unmounted Mean?
Apr 2, 2008
I downloaded truecrypt and created a file-hosted container and mounted it in truecrypt.
1) What exactly is "mounted" and "unmounted" mean? I mean I know I can't move files into the drive unless its mounted, but is there something wrong with having it mounted all the time. Is there a time when its supposed to unmounted?
2) I am considering encryption the entire windows xp including boot partition. Is this a good idea or is there a significant decrease in performance. Speed is a concern for me. Also, will this make it difficult for me to install ubuntu later on using dual boot (grub loader)?
Here is my current setup: 160GB 7200rpm hard drive 8mb buffer
Current Partitions:
C: (100GB, NTFS, windows xp pro)
D: (60GB, NTFS, data storage)
K: (4GB, file-hosted container, with container being in the C: drive) (this 4GB is part of the 100GB of C).................

If you encrypt your entire hard drive, and let's say you have 4 gb of ram, what happens if you need to unencrypt more than 4gb of data to use at once? Can you game if you encrypt your entire HDD? What effect does encryption have on performance?

After completing reinstall new WinXP with the same computer name and user account, I cant open my backup files due to the NTFS encryption is still with the files on by external hard drive. How can I recover those files?

I protected my personal files in WXP and made an Acronis true image of the disk. After a disk crash, I rebuilt a new disk instead of using the image but want to get to my personal files by using the Acronis image mount utility. The tool works pretty well, the image looks like drive "G" when mounted and I can see all of my files, except for the personal ones. My new WXP load has the same user name, password, and computer name as the old one did. However, the NTFS security will not let me see or take ownership of my personal files. I dont want to have to restore the old image just to get my files but will if I have to. Any ideas for an easier way?

I bought a new machine with one hard drive (C:), a dvd (D:) and a cd-rom (E:). Split the hard drive into two partitions. Expected the drives to now be HDD (C: and D:) with the dvd and cd being drive e and f respectively. ended up with HDD on C, dvd on D cd on E and new hdd partition on F:! can't find how to reletter the dvd and cd so that my hdd parts are all together. Found a key in the registry for mounted devices showing them as d and e but haven't found a way to change that (other than manually editing registry and since I don't know what else is affected I really don't want to do that Where are the drive letters for these devices assigned and how do I change them

Recommend keeping your PC clean and efficient over time? Is it easier to just reformat it when needed or better to clean it out regularly, and are there any ways of cleaning you would recommend?

i'm running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 Edition, with all the latest updates, all my drivers are up to date but when I preform general tasks such as web browsing my computer lags badly. It takes forever to log into Windows and takes even longer to load Firefox up. Sometimes I get the (Not Responding) appear in the title bar, and the whole computer will lock up only to suddenly come back to life in a minute or so.It's been doing this about a month after I got it, but when Windows is first installed after a format it runs as smooth as a whistle then after a hour or so it starts to lag. I doubt its the RAM as im running 1GB's worth and the computer isnt that old I only got it brand new last year.

slowness, stalls and really choppy video and audio everywhere on my computer. even the start-up windows chime is all warbly and choppy. i have problems with video stored on my hd, played from a dvd, as well as video online on Internet and my smugmug page. i have not noticed anything in particular taking up a lot of memory in the task manager, but there are an awful lot of programs in there and some duplicates of system processes
here is what i have tried
-removed all unused programs, files
-de-fragged hd
-ran disk cleanup
-removed unneeded programs from start-up process
-ran windows, qt, media player, java and flash updates
-ran virus scanner and registry cleaner
here is what i am working with:
-toshiba tecra a6 laptop, always plugged in to ac power
-windows xp sp2
-intel cpu t1300 @ 1.66ghz
-504 mb ram
-23 gb free space of a 52gb hd
-minimal programs - mostly office 2007, outlook express, nero and adobe plus some tiny insignificant ones like my harmony remote program
-nortons 360 (though i have removed this and still have the problem)
i am pretty comfortable working my way around advanced settings on my laptop and know enough to know what i should not change without help.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100, which I bought last August. It runs Windows XP Media Edition.About 2 months ago, I had some major problems with the laptop. The screen went crazy -- blue and white lines everywhere. I had to unplug and take out the battery to turn the computer off. After that, it would not boot up. The power light would come on, and I could hear the hard drive start up, but the screen would remain black and nothing else would occur.I sent the laptop in for repair. They replaced the mother board. I did not have any further problems and everything ran super smooth.Until about 3 days ago, when, quite suddenly, it started to act funky. I first noticed it when I tried to listen to music or play any kind of video. The video was and continues to be slightly sluggish, and in both audio and video, there is a noticeable static-like sound, especially when I try to scroll on a page ... or blink at it, really. I also got one blue screen. Mmm, those are fun (also my first with this computer). It continued to hate me after the blue screen, so I rebooted again. Which took forever. "Windows is shutting down." would stare at me, for seemingly an eternity. I knew when I got the machine that it had a fairly slow shut down and boot up, but this was ridiculous. Boot up, of course, wasn't any better.

This is a bit of a last resort. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a fairly old computer from around 2006 (3.2ghz, upgraded to 4gb RAM etc.) I use a Belkin 802.11g wireless card, connecting to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. A few months ago, I started having odd connection issues. Nothing new was installed/ uninstalled. Previously, the last thing uninstalled was a Steam version of M&Mark Messiah, but that was about a week previous. What would happen is that whilst browsing the internet (Chrome) the browser would not connect, saying 'Resolving Host'. When this was happening, no other browser would work (they'd just be 'loading'). Other programs would work (so, League of Legends would work except for the 'browser' bits such as news, Google Talk would work). I would have full signal, packets being sent, and I could always connect to the router config utility. I looked around, read a load of stuff about DNS problems, tried the fixes, with no luck. Eventually I stumbled across someone who recommended I turn off UPnP function of my router. I did so, and things miraculously worked. No problems at all.
Until last week. Despite the UPnP function being off, and despite not changing anything (to my knowledge) my internet has gone crazy again. It's worse than before. Posting this was an exercise in frustration - more 'resolving host' problems. Interestingly, the problem has spread to other programs - AdAware can't connect to the server and thus can't run, apparently; other scanners show no malware/spyware. Connecting to League of Legends is much slower - although once I am in the game, it runs entirely properly - as low a ping as ever. I've searched around and entirely failed to find a solution that works. On Chrome I disabled DNS-pre fetching, and that seemed to help, for about 2 minutes. Then back to normal.I have had ZoneAlarm installed in the past, and have Avast! running. I recently reinstalled ZA after the problems restarted to see if that would change anything, but nothing so far.

I am using Win Xp Pro and somehow the general and the view tabs are missing as an option under My computer -- Tools and then folder options. The only tabs that are available are the File types and Offline files tab. The general and the view tabs are missing. I became aware when I wanted to show all hidden files with a folder on my C Drive.

I'm having trouble with pages not loading when I'm on the internet using Netzero and Internet Explorer. It seems to be secure pages mostly (every time I want to order something online, or when I go to a company's application center and try to apply for a job.I am on my second printer (HP 3740). Granted, it's not top of the line, but I just bought it because my old one was broken (I thought) and now it is starting to have the same problems as the last one, and the problems started about a week after I bought it. It started with the printing getting faded, like the cartridge was running out of ink, then it went through the motions of printing but no ink was on the paper. Next it will stop moving, even though the power light comes on.

I have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.

First off I use windows XP with the latest service pack. I'm using the onboard sound card on my motherboard Asus striker II extreme.
The volume of my flash player (I first noticed it when trying to view a video on Hulu) but other flash embedded videos won't play sound either. I thought this was a flash problem, and tried the usual fixes uninstalling reinstalling, running the update utility and removing and reinstalling the plugin. Also it likely isn't a browser issue as embedded videos didn't play on either Firefox or Opera.
After restarting my computer after a few uninstalls I noticed my startup music wasn't playing as well. I'm thinking that it might be some registry error as it seems like the music is very quiet instead of muted, and all of the volume levels in the Sounds and Audio Device Properties menu are at the correct levels, and my other media players play music and movies just fine.
I've browsed the forums and haven't seen anyone with a similar problem or a fix, so any help would be greatly apprciated.
