Format And Reinstall - Slow Processing
Sep 7, 2005
My computer runs on WinXP Pro. Lately, it has started showing some trouble in processing speed. If more than one Internet Explorer windows are opened, or if applications like ADOBE Photoshop are used, the system slows down to almost a standstill. Even using the Windows Task Manager to shut down certain processes doesn't help.
I've run virus scans and spyware scans and the problem still persists.

i was previously ripping a lot of music from cd's onto my Sony Vaio, spent about six hours doing it. i shut off my comp that night and turned it on the next day, only to find that it would sit at the xp loading screen for 4 minutes until getting to the login page. along with that, i have random processor spikes and my comp is slowed down. all media, music or vids are lagged and have a digital static to them. i have defraged, and run anti-virus/ spyware programs trying to see if i have encountered a software issue, because that is what it sounds like w/ the processor spikes. i can't figure out what i have done and i'm wondering if anyone can head me in the right direction before i go ahead and reformat

I'm running Win XP Home - SP1 (all updates). When I shut down or reboot, the system hangs up for a long time. I sometimes have to attempt to shut it down a second time via Start/Turn Off Computer/Restart (or Shut Down). When I do Control/Alt/Delete to try to get the Task Manager it takes a long time to pop up. What do I need to do to find out what's hanging things up?

I've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

I chose not to load SmartDrive (mostly because I was too lazy to look for the disk I have it on). Now the installation process seems stuck (40 min or so) at the "Please wait while files are copied onto the HDD yada yada" phase. Should I just reboot and try again? Do I need to format again? Will load SmartDrive this time.

I have a DELL Dimension 4600 with matching DELL Windows XP Home Edition installation disk. I have not had any problems formatting my HD since Win 3.1. However, the info to re-format my Win XP HD seems to be highly classified and compartmentalized, and although I've looked, I can't seem to find any step by step instructions on how to do it without creating a bootable floppy disk, as my computer has 2 DVD drives but no floppy drive, and even if that were not a problem, finding the correct application/s to do the job and using it/them in the correct sequence also seems to be well hidden and a mystery. Can some one please point me to a document that goes through this procedure step by step, that is how to re-format an NTFS HD and re-install Win XP without a floppy drive.

computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!

I`m on a dial-up connection at the moment and each page takes ages to load. Plus I`m being nagged to get off the PC. Also, sorry if this topic is being posted in the wrong place.Anyway, my PC decided it would be fun to revert to default settings (not a BIOS issue) every time I booted it up, so I decided to reinstall XP Pro, since it was due for a reinstallation anyway.

My computer using Windows XP operating system has become extremely slow. It takes around 30 seconds to bring up Microsoft WORD and EXCEL. It is similarly slow on my other programs. I frequently run Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware which have detected no problems.
On turning on my computer, it takes about 2 minutes for Windows XP to start up and no MS audio is heard during the start up phase. Audio is working on other programs, however, such as MS Windows.

One question about Multi-Core and Mulit-Processor machines. It is the duty of the operating system to make use of all the cores and CPUs? or it is the duty of the running application? And which one should optimize this task?

My laptop is an hp pavillion dv4000 version 2002(w/SP3), and I got it almost 3-4 years ago. It has, as expected, gotten slow over the years. But now, it's EXTREMELY slow. As in, it takes like 10 minutes to start up. It takes several minutes for my internet browser to pop up. Doing more than one thing at once is impossible. And I constantly have "Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low" popping up...from doing even the simplest tasks on it.
I really like this laptop and don't want to purchase a new one. I want to completely wipe off everything from the laptop and then reinstall windows XP so that I can start afresh. Problem is, I don't have the CD, my laptop never came with it. The manual says it already came with the recovery feature pre-installed.

My computer was going slow and pop-ups like crazy. So I backed up all of my information and got a new install disk from Dell. Heres the problem, When installing it keeps getting hung up on 36, 16, or 9 mins. It will not pass that point. I have exhausted all of my options, I restart checked all the cables, drained the power by pulling the cord and holding the power button then plugging it back in. Then called dell and they walked me through wiping the HD clean, by starting up in DOS and walking me through the steps. Well did all that and started install again, and once again it got hung up on 23 mins

Anybody have any ideas off the top of their head as to the reasoning behind this error message? My D: drive is a cd/rw drive, not a hard drive..COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:qxp_slpcomcom1xsrceventsier1eventsystemobj.cpp.

No real drama today. On Boot up I get a warning message.... Windows - No Disk Exception Processing Message c0000013 Paremeters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c If I just hit cancel or continue button, all seems to be working OK. Tried a restore to last known good restore point... made no difference. Should I just do a restore using Windows Disc or is there possibly something more sinister going on here?

I recently got my computer back from the computer fixing guy (because I killed the master boot record and I had no idea how to fix it) and it's a lot slower than it was before. It was a clean install of XP, and the only difference I can see is that the computer magician installed PC-cillin on it. It's not any specific program that's slow now either. Firefox, IE, Unreal Tournament, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Civilization 4, all the stuff I usually use is equally slow

However, due to a high price I haven't been able to have my computer fixed. I already have the Windows XP Pro server pack one on a CD. how i can go about reinstalling Windows XP Pro on my laptop? And is there anything i should be careful about while installing the software?

I am getting extremely annoyed with the message that keeps popping up every thirty seconds (see attachment). I don't know why it's searching for some removable media (I think) when my thumb drive is still inserted. I have been having similar problems since the stupid Geek Squad told me I needed a new hard drive and then named it the "H" drive for some reason; now from time-to-time when I try to run programs which (I think) used to be based off my C drive I'll get one of these or a C+++ runtime error window. How can I make this stop? I'm running Windows XP SP3. on an HP desktop. All help is appreciated, as this is a highly annoying problem right now.

I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?

My Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?
