Failed Fax Printer Connection Home
Jul 21, 2005
I have been using my fax from my computer for a long time and then one day it just did not work anymore. So I installed the XP home CD and tried to reinstall my fax and that was horrible. It still does not work and after all the research I have done to try and get it to be fixed, I am led to this conclusion, I get the error that the 'Attempt to connect to the fax printer failed' and then it askes to connect the driver and I do so but nothing happens. When I am in the Fax Console nothing is highlighted and at the bottom of the Colsone it reads 'Refreshing' or 'fax inaccessible'.When I go to fax and the Send FaX Wizard pops up and I click 'Next', nothing happens and then I get an error saying that the program is not responding.

Trying to install a Dell laser printer onto someones laptop with Windows 2000. Towards the end of the installation, the computer rebooted due to a bad battery and the AC was accidently unplugged. Now right when I get into Windows before the login screen, the computer just reboots and I can barely see a flash of a STOP BSOD error but don't have any time to read it. I can get into safe mode and do stuff. I tried reinstalling the software and drivers but it gives me an error. I can't uninstall anything because it doesn't see anything installed. What can I do? Its a USB printer BTW.

I have recently updated (Auto)Windows XP. I have a Xerox laser printer on my network which after the update failed to work although it works from other computers (Mac) on the same network. I did a system restore and now it works, so the update is the fault. Before or if, I update again has anyone any advice on how to repair this situation. Auto Update is presently turned off).

Main computer in home on Comcast cable..........CD/RW suddenly was not recognized and internet stopped working. Switched out modem, still no internet. Comcast tech came out, ran everthing to his computer and internet worked. Plugged modem in via USB and tried to load USB drivers, but no CD/RW...I took CD to secondary computer (hooked up to the main by wireless connection) to download drivers onto a floppy and THIS CD/RW would not recognize the data CD.......in explorer it showed the D: drive but would not read the data CD...I put in a music CD and in explorer it showed everything listed on the CD...........
CD/RW worked briefly on main computer (long enough to load the USB drivers), and even connected to Internet via USB in the modem.....but again, the CD/RW quit and the internet connection was lost again. Do you make any sense of this? I'm so tired of all of it.

I have Windows trying repeatedly to install 3 updates, KB948590, KB945553 & KB941693 and failing. It first tried through automatic updates and after a re-start I saw it again trying to download more updates. Thinking that this was strange I went into the Windows Update site, and after checking for critical updates it said I needed the above 3. I then had a look at the update history and it said it had just tried to install these 3 through automatic updates and failed. When I click on the "failed" icon as directed to find out what went wrong nothing happens.
Between the automatic update attempt and my manual windows update attempt I was prompted to download KB892130, the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool. This was successful. The sequence of this is below;
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB948590) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Windows Update - FAILED
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB945553) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Windows Update - FAILED
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941693) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Windows Update - FAILED
Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Windows Update - SUCCESSFUL
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941693) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Automatic Updates - FAILED
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB948590) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Automatic Updates - FAILED
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB945553) Wednesday, 9 April 2008 Automatic Updates - FAILED
I'm running XP Home SP2 and IE7. I'm concerned that Windows on auto updates is going to waste some of my download quota by repeatedly attempting to download these updates without success. How can I find out why they won't install and try and fix it if nothing happens when I click on the "failed" icon?

I posted this under the software thread as well, but maybe this is a more appropriate place. This is the deal. I got on here a while back because my parents suffered a lightening strike which rendered their computer worthless. After the great input on here, I replaced the PSU and the motherboard and blam, $140.00 later the computer started. However the internet connection (cable broad band) was so incredibly slow it would not open any web pages other than something simple like: Google.com or yahoo.com, etc. Click on a story or the weather and nothing. So I contact the internet provider (Insight Cable) and talk with their tech support that ran multiple tests. They seemed to think that there was a virus problem.
I ran the parents ZONE ALARM and it found 85 virus and 19 spy ware programs. It could not treat or fix the viruses. My parents are elderly and only use the computer to check email and cruise the net. They are completely computer illiterate. They may have inadvertently been cruising the net with Zone Alarm turned off.Today I loaded the Dell XP, OS, disk. I did not repair; I formatted the hard drive and loaded everything back onto the computer, i.e., drivers for video, sound, Ethernet, etc.I loaded the cable modem drivers and established a connection.

Two custom PCs with XP Pro at same SP level. PC1 sees printer through switch. PC2 can not see printer. PC2 connects and sees printer when I cable the USB DIRECTLY to the printer instead of going thru a switch. Therefore, I know PC2 can print. Have tried 2 different switches. An A/B data switch and Belkin's 4x1 USB Peripheral Switch F1U401. PC1 works with both switches but PC2 does not.

We've had to change our address space and therefore the printer address has changed. I've changed the address on all but one computer. On this particular computer when I try to edit the TCP/IP port I get the message:
"An error occurred during port configuration. Access is denied."
If I try to create a new port I can select that I want it to be a Standard TCP/IP Port and then it tells me:
"Specified port cannot be added. Access is denied."

I have connected 3 new PC's on a P2P network, and connected a HP 4610 Color Laser Printer via a JetDirect 175 print server. On one PC, I can only print from the Administrator account. The other 2 computers work fine. On the one that is having issues, when printing a test page I receive a "Failed to Print" error mesage, and looking in the printer jobs menu, it shows that there was an error printing. The
Administrator account can print fine from this machine.
The user accounts are "restricted user" accounts on all 3 computers.
All 3 computers are exactly the same type, and all have the latest
updates.

my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

I'm a tech at a college and am working on this computer that the printer spooler service won't stay started. You start up the machine and go to printers and faxes. There are none listed (of course cause the spooler isn't running) You click on add printer and it tells you that the service isn't running. So you go to run services.msc, printer spooler says it's stopped so you start it. It will then run until you try to print something or go to printers and faxes in the control panel. Basically as soon as you open the window the printer spooler service stops.Does anyone know a fix for this. Last time it happened one of my co-workers found a tool to fix it but we haven't been able to find it since and all the researching I have done leads me nowhere

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went
to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.

I've been trying to use Remote Desktop to connect from my home computer to my office network's machines. I've followed all the instructions except for the part where it talks about getting a "virtual private network connection". Not sure if I have this part done right. Not even sure if this is the problem. Is there something that needs to be set up before being able to connect from a home computer to an office machine?

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.
