My computer's been experiencing loss of power whenever I use a program that requires the CD-ROM. It doesn't crash right away - I can run the program for 20-30 minutes before the computer loses power. The screen goes black, the fan disengages, and the whole thing simply shuts down immediately. The crash seems to be just a loss of power, as the system log doesn't record any errors and when I press the power button on the computer after a crash, Windows XP Pro starts up normally.
I've tried replacing the external power cable but it didn't solve the problem. CHKDSK doesn't find any errors on the drive and it's a relatively new hard drive, about 2 months old. My antivirus, which is up-to-date, can't find any viruses either. I'm sure it's a hardware problem, but what part is faulty? Could a power connector to the CD-ROM cause the entire computer to crash, even?

My Dell 4600 is a Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz with 1536MB RAM and uses WindowsXP SP2 with 90% free space. I've just started having error messages: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close." This is very annoying. I did print out one dialog box: "Error signature AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: hpswp_selection.dll ModVer: 2.15.7.0 Offset: 000246b8.
From the ModName description above, it would seem to be associated with HP; and the only thing different re my pc is that yesterday I installed an HP C7250 all-in-one printer and did the recommended software installation as I do scan and fax in addition to copying, printing, and photos. What can I do to eliminate these error messages? Hopefully, there will be an easy fix.
I was hesitant to get another HP printer as I've had several. The first all-in-one was great and lasted about 5 years; the last 3 were not so good and were all replacements for the first with each successive A-I-O having problems of its own. Would you suggest that I uninstall the HP software, return the printer, and get a new Canon? However, I've read messages that users are frequently unhappy with Canon's ink-guzzling, expensive ink cartridges.

When saving a jpg image in Firefox, Firefox crashes and closes without warning. When viewing a folder full of pictures in Windows Explorer, Explorer crashes and closes in about 10 seconds (it varies). This is even when viewing the files without thumbnails (Detailed list view). I have removed Thumbs.db from this folder. I have run chkdsk /F on all partitions in my computer. This folder that is causing the Explorer crash is on a FAT32 partition. chkdsk found no errors on the FAT32 partition, but fixed something in the NTFS partition.
Even though only one folder seems to be causing Explorer to crash, it seems that no matter where I save images in Firefox, Firefox still crashes. I scanned for viruses a bit. I ran Free AVG on the entire computer. I also ran Trend Micro Housecall from the browser. No threats were found. I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates on a Gateway MT3419 laptop.

Outlook 2003 has been crashing on me, sometimes immediately, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes when I try to drag a message to a folder... I get the "has encounterd an error and needs to close" popup, and can't do anything with the program, so I hit send report. If I have "restart Outlook 2003" checked, it crashes again immediatly upon opening, if I don't, and wait a little while to open it again, it will open, and download my mail, but then as soon as I try to do something, like delete an email or something, it crashes again. IE "soft-crashes" almost immediately every time I open the browser - by this I mean, I get the "has encountered an error and needs to close" popup, but I found that if i just drag the box down to the bottom off the screen, I can continue to browse just fine.
The details of the error report from the crash popup for explorer are:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: wininet.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2753 Offset: 0001b810
technical details won't let me copy & paste it here. I found the administrative tools place to view events, this is what I see for the IE crashes: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module wininet.dll, version 6.0.2900.2753, fault address 0x0001b810.............

my 3 years old HP AMD 2.0 GHz laptop (Windows Home SP1, updated to SP2 and relatively well updated with security updates) suddenly crashed with a blue screen then could no longer boot up. I then successfully used the four "System Restore" CDs (that initially came with the laptop) to reinstall Windows XP Home SP1 (wiping out all files on the hard disk). I also installed Microsoft Office 2003, and downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox and AdAware. The laptop then ran fine for a while, until I used Windows Update to install about 70 of the Important Updates recommended by Windows Update. Soon after, while surfing the internet, the laptop's fan got into high gear mode blowing much hot air, then I got the dreaded Blue Screen, and the laptop crashed and rebooted. All processes got started fine, and after a couple of minutes, total CPU usage settled down to around 1%, with the System Idle Process taking up 99% CPU. This time, I immediately started Task Manager to display all processes and their CPU usage.
With no application running, I kept watching for at least another 5 minutes, and saw a svchost.exe process suddenly appearing at the top of Task Manger's process list (ordered by CPU usage), hogging 98% of CPU usage, and driving the CPU hard into being overheated and another blue screen crash. After some searching and reading, I tried to download and run the recommended "Notebook Hardware Control" (NHC) program, and set the CPU Clock to "Maximum Battery" (for both battery and plugged in power) in the hope of slowing down the CPU Clock and avoiding overheating, and this did not help either. I then rebooted, and watched for this svchost.exe rogue to appear, and saw that the CPU temperature (as displayed by NHC) climbed quickly from 40 degrees C, to 50, then 60, then 75 - but when I then hastily used Task Manager's "End Process" command to kill the offending svchost.exe process, System Idle Process reclaimed 94% of CPU time, the CPU temperature quickly dropped back down eventually to around 40 degrees, and the laptop kept working fine without this svchost.exe system process. The problem is that this occurs regularly while I am using the laptop, and I cannot always react quickly enough to NHC's warning about rising CPU temperature in order to kill the svchost.exe, and therefore would get a crash every 15 or 20 minutes, interrupting my work. Is there any solution I can try?

Since Win XP (+ service pack and annoying CA EZ Trust virus software; anyone know how to keep the ez firewall software from loading at startup?), my computer will crash intermittently - with no seeming pattern. No blue screen, no warning, just 'bang'; I kill the powercord, turn it back on and it's like nothing happened to the unit. there's often no event of the crash in the error reporting queue sometimes crash occurs and startup prompts for a diskcheck; never a problem there. This phenomena occurs most frequently when I'm (trying) running a backup - or when I do an extended virus search backup routine I can't complete without a crash; virus check has gone thru completely a number of times.

Pentium 4, 2.44 gig processor, 2 gig memory, XP Pro SP3. I have had recurring BSOD for 2 months. After running a mini-dump with BlueScreen View, the problem appeared to be a corrupted ntoskrnl.exe file. I rebuilt the Boot.ini file, which loads the ntoskrnl.exe file. Still BSOD crashes. I then purchased "Registry Booster", and ran that. Continued BSOD crashes. I can send a JPEG of the BlueScreen View if any one can help me figure out the cause of these random crashes.

my Toshiba Satellite M110 recently froze, crashed, displayed the blue screen (beginning dump of physical memory). i restarted the computer, but it suddenly displayed: Read Disk error. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.I talked to Toshiba Corp. Australia, but they said i had to bring it in to be repaired, or backed up, then a system restore. my dad has a technician friend, who will be able to back it up... but is there any other ideas? i mean, this might sound rather random and deranged, but does anyone here know how to open up and remove a HDD (hard Disk Drive) from a Toshiba Satellite without blowing anything up? my dad's tech friend has a laptop USB HDD Caddy, but i just need to well yea. i have the recovery disk and know how to recover, so i got that bit covered, just the removal of the HDD before 2nite and safely too. other wise i can just get my dad's tech friend to do it.

My computer crashed the other day and I got the dreaded BSD. I managed to reinstall the operating system which is XP Home Service Pack 1 on a CD drive that is not working correctly. I have managed to reinstall drivers so far but that is as far as I have gotton besides the reinstalling the OS. I have a friend who is 120 miles away and unavailable during the day that is trying to assist me,
How do I go about getting back on the internet, I have highspeed internet access thru Comcast. I am leaving the wireless alone for now and just trying to connect thru the modem cable alone now but nothing is happening, when I try to connect thru the cable modem the browser is not working. I had Firefox before instead of IE.

I installed a codec that was a virus disguised in windows media player. As soon as i installed it i got the BSOD. i got BSOD from normal boot, safe mode, trying to use the windows cd(to do a recovery but crashes before first screen of options). If i use a linux based boot disk 2/3 kernal paniced. The one that didnt panic, Avira anti-virus, scans finds the virus but cannot remove it. It is definitely not a hardware problem and i have tried all of the boot cds with ALL of my hdds unplugged and it does the same.
