I am trying to fix a Dell Dimensions 4600 PC that is not working. When I turn it on it sounds like it is running, but nothing is showing up on the screen. It is not the Monitor as that works fine with another computer. What do you think the problem could be

It has never mentioned its license or asked for the code on the side.My friend has dell Inspiron 2500 laptop. She has had it for 6-7 years now and has never done a reinstall or reformat, so naturally its on its last legs.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am rebuilding a Dell 4600i with 2.8g CPU, 2g ram. 80g hd,dvd drive. After having a time getting the system to boot with windows XP home edition, I now have 2 other issues. one it shows only 16 bit operation, why not 32 or 64bit? Second a short time after booting up the the monitor goes blank, cannot do anything after that. I had to format the HD and reload windows XP to get the computer to do anything, then it did it again.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer was going slow and pop-ups like crazy. So I backed up all of my information and got a new install disk from Dell. Heres the problem, When installing it keeps getting hung up on 36, 16, or 9 mins. It will not pass that point. I have exhausted all of my options, I restart checked all the cables, drained the power by pulling the cord and holding the power button then plugging it back in. Then called dell and they walked me through wiping the HD clean, by starting up in DOS and walking me through the steps. Well did all that and started install again, and once again it got hung up on 23 mins
View 7 Replies View RelatedLast year I installed a CD burner in this computer. After I installed it I lost access to both Cdroms. I had tried to installed XP using 6 flopies loaned to me, but when I get to the last(6) flopy it restart on the already active XP. I do not know if it is a problem with my motherboard or what. I can not get to format the drive so I can reinstall windows.The version currently on the computer is XP SP2. I would not mind having to loose all my information on the drive rigth now, but I need to be able to access my CDroms.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brothers Dell Dimension 4600 will not put out any video signal. I've tried two working monitors and nothing. I can hear the harddrive working in a somewhat normal manner just after power on but there is never a hint from the monitor. Anyway, I offered to at least pop off the side cover and take a look for any hint of what may be the problem. Since he just moved to another town, his computer was subjected to the usual transportation handling etc. So what would be the usual things to check. I've never had a Dell or Windows XP Home. (I have Win98SE and Win2kp) Kinda hard to do anything right off when there is no video
View 2 Replies View RelatedWindows Media Player 11 will not recognize the CD burner when you attempt to burn a CD by selecting "Burn" on the player. I also have Roxio Creator LE software and it burns CD's with no problem. The hardware devise check says the CD devise is working normal and it is selected for recording.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 4600 dimension , not sure how this is. but when the system boots up it gives the dell logo screen f-2 & f-12 deal then it comes up please select the operating system to start, both options are microsoft windows XP Home Edition, how do I get this thing to skip this screen and just boot up? What would of been done to cause this? as there are 2 listings and if I arrow down to the second one to tell it to start from it , this comes up.Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem,Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Now the DVD does not play anymore and I get the error message "The file does not have a program assocaited with it to perform this action." each time I try to play a DVD.I have gone to the "Device Manager" to check for the DVD driver. It is still there and working fine. I even unistalled the driver and rebooted my computer. This did not help.

View 1 Replies View Relateda friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 (P4-2Ghz, 60Gb HDD, 784mb RAM- added 512mb and a NEC DVD+/-R, circa 2002 I think?) and needs to do a clean install. He has the CD that came with it. We looked all over google and the Dell site and can't seem to find out how to do a clean install. We pressed F12 and tried to boot from the CD-ROM and thought it was going to work, but it said that we were trying to install XP on a partition that already had XP on it. I saw no option for full/clean restore.

Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. It says Winsock error problem, but I have fixed the registry keys and followed all instructions.

Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI de-infected a windows XP system with SP3 and IE7. Once I did that, http no longer loaded in IE. It does not work in portable firefox either. I can type in ftp:// ftp address and IE works. Likewise I
can use https:// and the page loads! What is going on: I tried:
1) Reset ie7 as per MS
2) Removed IE 7
2a) IE6 would not load http either
3) reapplied SP3
4) Repair install win winxp cd.
5) Deleted and re-installed network card
This is where I am now. Still no http://. Since multiple applications are affected, I do not think it is a browser helper.
I'm using Speedtouch 330 DSL modem single port when i changed the ISP cannot browse the sharing Internet but i can use Yahoo Messenger. Windows XP, before 3 computers working fine when i changed the ISP internet card thru DSL modem with single port i cannot browse the other with.

I am currently trying to hook up my dell latitude cpx to my tv to use it as my monitor. It has an S-Video out port, and my tv has RCA ports only, so i purchased a cable which is s-video to an rca connector for my video in. Well when I boot up my laptop, when i get to the welcome screen in xp, it starts to display on my tv, but then about 5 to 10 seconds after that it flickers and the picture goes away.Ive tried everything in the display settings and also enabled everything in my BOIS, with no luck.

You have maybe 10 good minutes before it happens - it doesn't seem to matter what you were doing - we have been using firefox, or IE, or any number of other non-web browser programs when it happens. It will suddenly freeze up and there is nothing you can do but shut it down by pressing the power button.The only thing different that we did recently was download and install the latest Norton 360. After that the freezing up started, but in all honesty, it was seeming a little sluggish before that.
I've been having problems with slow performance. This happens when switching users, working offline and when browsing.
I use Norton Antivirus and Spy Sweeper.
I have recently had to format my Dell Dimension 2400 desktop due to the fact it was full of viruses
I used an XP home sp2 disc to format and reinstall the operating system no probs, but now the screen resolution won't go above 640x480 pixels, and everything is massive, I'm guessing this is a driver issue
i'm haveing tonz of probleums with XP and i'm not really sure what to do, i don't have much space left and i would like to just start over i have formatted it twice before, and fixed all the probleums. now if i do it from that will i still need the windows XP cd and such, i also have my dell recovery cd if this helps?
