View 6 RepliesI connect to the internet thru a router with a built in firewall.(turned on) I am also running a software firewall with comodo. Do I need the comodo firewall Every new update version of the comodo firewall seems to mess one thing or another up on my old winXP machine.
If you have Comodo Firewall Pro v3.0.25.378 on your system the install of sp3 may hang at 'Running processes before install'. This is due to the May 30, 2008 update of Comodo and the 'Guard32.dll'.To install sp3 either uninstall Comodo or an easier method is to disable 'Defence+', open the system32 folder and look for the 'Guard32.dll'. Right click on the 'Guard32.dll' and rename to 'Guard32.dll5' (or whatever you want to rename it to).I spent hours trying to figure out why the sp3 install hung at 'Running processes before install' (if you open Task Manager while the install is hung you will see 'fixcss.exe' and 'nv4prep.exe' using 100% cpu). Finally boiled the problem down to the 'Guard32.dll' which is Comodo's 'Defence+'.It won't do any good just to completely shutdown Comodo and stop the service. Apparently the Guard32.dll remains in memory and needs to be disabled by renaming it.After installing sp3 go back and rename the Guard32.dll to it's original.I have contacted Comodo about this issue and they seem to be working on it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried searching for this topic but I didn't find anything, though it may be that I didn't look carefully enough. What's happening is that Windows Explorer has recently been making my desktop icons disappear, and in some cases my taskbar as well. When I open the program, particularly when I have removable media connected, my desktop icons revert to the placeholder image, and gradually the correct images return to each. It can take some time for all the icons to return to normal. Additionally, when I close Windows Explorer, the desktop icons vanish altogether, and wherever they go, the take the taskbar with them. The wallpaper remains completely untouched. Any open windows I have will remain onscreen and responsive, infact while I'm waiting for the return of my taskbar I can browse the Web to pass the time. But if I minimize a window that's it until the return of my taskbar, which usually occurs within 5 minutes or less, along with the gradual return of all the icons as described above. My system scans clean for malware, and Norton's WinDoctor doesn't find anything. Any suggestions? This is, at the very least, inconvenient, if not downright worrisome. I'd feel better if I knew whether it was even normal.
View 14 Replies View RelatedStrange occurance on a machine today. There was nothing wrong with the rig running XP Pro. I was testing a BartPE bootdisk with WiFi drivers for the specific card that was on the computer. Boots up PE no prob, no joy on the NIC though, but thats not the issue. I'll fix that later. When I exited PE and restarted the machine the boot.ini had been modified. It now showed 3 instances of Windows XP (which where non existent) and when I booted into windows it had re-enabled ALL the startup programs (all but a few where disabled through msconfig) and even some previously disabled Services had been restarted. Everything else was fine, it took a bit of work to change it all back and correct the boot.ini file, but just wondering if anyone know WHY this would have happened. I cant think of anything in the PE boot that would have done that
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I deleted my windows partition and formatted(full not quick) my hard drive so I could start fresh for Windows since I just got a new motherboard! So I went to reinstall Windows XP Pro Corporate Ed. and when I do is says that certain files like drmclien.dll was not copied correctly. There are other files that dont copy right either(most of them are .dll but some are .sys files). My Windows disc is completely scratch free and what not and its a legit copy...I just dont know why the files are messing up like this

It seemed to be firewalled, but no one else I asked really knew much about it, so I just kind of accepted it and moved on. But recently one of my friends in Tokyo has gotten a new internet connection, which her computer works perfectly on and gets amazing speed. But when I connect, it still seems I am firewalled. Using PC Flank's scanner pcflank.com all my ports are stealthed while hers are closed.

Windows firewall Just like magic, much of the text on my computer turned from black to blue. For example, all the text I've typed in to label my photos is now all blue, it was black when I originally typed it. All the text I typed in under my document files had turned to blue as well. Not all the text on the computer has turned to blue, just mostly in documents and photos. I have no idea how this happened. Does anybody know how I can change it back to the original color, black. I really have tried everything I can think of and so far nothing works.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have run virus scan, Adaware and Spybot and nothing is found yet the computer runs slow. Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

View 11 Replies View RelatedA few days ago my windows firewall warning was on. While attempting to re-enable the firewall through the security center I received a message "we're sorry, the security center could not turn on windows firewall" and then told me to do it manually. Attempting to open the windows firewall gave me this message "Windows firewall settings could not be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall/Internet Connection sharing service? Yes/No.Clicking Yes, gives this message: "Windows cannot start the Windows firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service." With no further explanation. I re-installed SP2 with no improvement.
