Cannot Access My Outlook .pst Files
Dec 14, 2006
I have Windows XP Home edition. I was going to copy Outlook contact information and saved e-mails, so I (I thought) followed the instructions. Now this info is in my documents and whatever I do I get one of two messages as follows:You are attempting to open a file of office type 'Office Data File' (.pst) if you want to open this, File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file. I am signed on as administrator.

I'll share what comes up when I right click Properties in each case:A file on a shared folder on my home Windows network that is being denied access to for copying. It is specifically this file as the other files are being read/copied wirhout issue. And, I can open this file on the computer on which the drive physically resides, just not copy it to the other machine. On right clicking file and getting the Properties screen - boxes for Read only and Hidden attributes are unchecked, and the only tabs available are Custom and Summary (no Security tab). An Outlook archive (.pst) that was created on computer A, which was copied on to network B (for backup purposes). Since computer A died, I need to open this archive, but on right clicking the file and requesting open with Outlook, I get the message: file may not exist, you may not have permissions, or may be opened by another user. Same situation on the Properties screen (except only other tab is Summary) as on the earlier point.

Now Outlook is unwilling to send the email and I cant get access to my access file...surely I can choose to send and receive attachments?

I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I just picked up a Sony Vaio laptop F270. From what I can gather is it has (2) separate partitions. I want to do a complete wipe/format of the HD and get back to having (1) Large partition

when using Defragment (programs-accessories-system tools-defragment) in Windows XP, after defragmenting C drive, report shows that certain large .pst files from Outlook were not defrag.this is unfortunate since these are the "gummiest" files on my computer. is there any way to defrag these files safely? perhaps and update to defrag program which will enable this? or a workaround? or a third party program which will defrag these files? a way to defrag .pst files within Outlook?

I am running a disk defrag and I get the message that not all the files could be defragmented.I ran chkdsk and repaired the errors but I would get the same message.I then copied the disk to a brand new hard drive and I get the same message form the defrag. When I go to details it refers to outlook.pst and archive.pst being the problem.I ran scanpst.exe on both files and it repaired errors.I run it again and it says no errors are found yet it still holds up defrag. What is wrong with these files and what can I do to repair them?

I'm trying to take a shortcut in Outlook Express using it's mail modification security feature to filter out spam emails. I would like to be able to copy and paste all of my "spam rules" from my computer onto the system of other family members using a USB storage device. This would end up saving considerable time by avoiding the input of over 150 words (this amount is always growing), one at a time, into each computers OE mail modification security feature. I've look in the WINOWS folder and can't find where the OE files are all kept, and specifically, the spam rules. I've been to the OE folder before but can't remember for the life of me what the address is.

Old system had many .dbx files but zero .pst files - no export/backup had ever been done on it. Tried to copy over the .dbx files, and appeared to work, but then somehow outlook clobbered old and copied .dbx files, or rendered them invisible.

I have powerpoint viewer 2003 which will open .pps and .ppt files on my hard-drive, but will not open them as e-mail attachments received in OE6. This is very inconvenient, and I want to remedy the problem. I do not have MS office 2003, but the stand-alone MS powerpoint viewer 2003. I am using WinXP Media Center Edition, version 2002, with SP2 installed.

I have had a slightly annoying problem with Outlook Express which I use as my default mail client. Everything seems to work fine apart from when I try to open PDF files directly from OE, it tries to open them with notepad, which obviously doesn't work. I can save them anywhere else on my computer, my documents for example, and opening them from there works fine. I have the latest Adobe Reader. I can't find anyway to tell OE to open these attachments using Adobe Reader.

I have recently formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows. I had over 120 Gbs worth of video files I needed to keep, but since I only had about 20 Gbs of free HD space I created a new partition in the free space, put in as many files as would fit in it, expand the partition and repeated the procedure until all of the files were safely in the new partition. I then formatted the primary partition, installed Windows XP SP1 and then updated it fully (so now I have XP Home SP2 with the latest updates). Then I defragmented the C drive, merged the partitions and defragmented again. Now I cannot access (or actually use, since I can see them but I cannot open, move or delete) the files. Whenever I try to open the video files I get a error whichever media player I use (Windows Media Player, Winamp, VLC), and if I try to move or delete any of those files I get an error from Windows telling me to check whether the file is in use, write protected or if the disk is full or that I do not have enough permissions to perform that action. The only way I am able to move or delete those files is using a freeware app called "Unlocker", which reports that there are no programs currently using/locking those files (not even Explorer), but it does allow me to move or delete them (obviously I want to be able to open the files, not get rid of them).
There were other files and folders in the partition that I merged into C: (using Partition Magic) but only the files in the folder that had the movies (as well as some srt, sub and idx subtitle files) are affected by this issue.

I cannot access my files any longer.
I installed WinXP on my desktop. You know the point at USER profile where you are asked whether to make files private or not?
I chose to make files private.
Recently my OS got corrupt and I had to repair it. The CD was not loading well, so I used another copy of WinXP.
The new OS installed by my private files cannot be accessed.
I slaved hard and installed WinXP on another hard as master by still, I cant access the hard.
Trying to open it would tell the folder (user folder) cannot be accessed with that irritating system sound.
